When will we get the PDFs of the initial August items in the subscriptions? Will it be as soon as they ship, or will special contrary rules be in effect for the first month?
Historically the PDF is added for downloading when the physical copy ships, but we have not made any announcements yet for Starfinder subscriptions.

Wasn't the Pathfinder CRB PDF embargoed until the opening day of GenCon, or am I misremembering? I know the site crashed and was down basically all weekend with everyone trying to download their copies; I hope it's been reinforced with adamantine and sovereign glue for this year....
That event preceded my hiring by a few months, and I'm not sure.

That is why I raised the question. I am quite familiar with the standard practice for releasing PDFs, but I did see posts from some people talking about PDFs for the initial release of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook and wondered whether something similar might be in effect for the August releases for Starfinder.

Greetings,
Thanks for this message thread. It has provided me with most of the answers to my questions. I am very interested in doing the subscription service, significantly for the free pdf and discount. I understand you are waiting to make the decision on how to put out the subscription service. But in waiting for that announcement, I am not currently pre-ordering, although I do plan on buying all the items you have currently listed for pre-order. It might be helpful for you guys to send out a survey request to your mailing list in order to get useful data of the number of folks with interest in the new game system beyond the current pre-order numbers.
Good luck with the launch,
Ilby

Undecided on where to pre-order Starfinder materials. I'm new to RPG and my only Pathfinder purchasing experience is the Beginner's Box, Core Rulebook and Ultimate Equipment from my local comic shop.
Paizo direct: If I pre-order Starfinder physical materials directly from Paizo, do I automatically receive the PDF as well? Will materials arrive at my home on the day of release?
Amazon Prime: What if I pre-order at Amazon Prime? Some of the items have a discount. Will these orders include a PDF? Will Amazon ship early so materials arrive on the final release date? Are these listings sanctioned by Paizo, or some kind of speculative reseller?
Local shop: What about pre-ordering at my local comic book shop? PDF? Available on release day? Any drawbacks?
Also interested in opinions on which purchasing methods best support the Starfinder community. It's not just about the price.

If you preorder from Paizo you won't get a PDF. To get that you need to subscribe - the subscription isn't available yet, but it will be before launch. They try to arrange things so that continental US subscribers receive their books on street date. That doesn't always happen, but the PDF is granted when your book ships, so you'll pretty much always have electronic access a few days before then and sometimes a couple of weeks before.
No PDFs are granted via any other distribution channel. Some people find buying from amazon and buying the PDF from paizo is cheapest given shipping costs (amazon take a loss on shipping paizo charge it at cost). Amazon are notoriously poor at achieving street date - sometimes they're late by a matter of weeks.
Paizo have said that they need sales through all their channels and that customers should pick whatever works best for us. (Presumably they make the most profit from direct sales, but presence in FLGSes is a plus too)..
If you want the PDF, want earliest possible access and don't necessarily want the cheapest avenue a subscription sounds like the best option for you.

Thanks for the facts AND the experienced what-usually-happens info. Since my priorities are...
- Obtain content in any format at earliest possible date
- Eventually own the physical materials and PDF
- Support the Paizo community and FLGS (friendly local game store)
...sounds like the best plan is to wait for Paizo to open subscription sign-up which should get me the PDF as early as possible. I'll also pre-order physical materials at my FLGS which are more likely to be available on release date (vs Amazon) and still dodge the shipping fees.

Yeah, I think that sounds like the best option for you but it's hard to be certain until the subscription details are revealed.
There could well be two or more subscriptions (for the rules/AP and also the subsidiary products like map packs and so forth).
Hopefully not too long now!

Just to clarify, a Paizo subscription includes both the physical and digital copies; you can't subscribe to just the PDF. Your post read kind of like you were planning to get the PDF from Paizo and the physical copy from your local game store.
You can, of course, purchase the PDF from Paizo.com on street date and get your physical copy from the store on the same day, but you can't preorder or subscribe to just the PDF. Also, without a subscription, there's not a discount on the PDF (although PDFs of Pathfinder hardcovers are priced extraordinarily reasonably at $9.99 and I'm hopeful that Starfinder may follow the same pricing guidelines).
As Steve says, one question that remains unanswered is whether there will be one Starfinder subscription to All The Stuff or whether it will be broken down into lines like the Pathfinder subs so you can subscribe, say, to just the AP but not the pawns, etc. That will effect whether I subscribe.

Magabeus |

I assume and hope there will be separate subscriptions for the different items, just like for Pathfinder.
Shipping costs to Europe are a pain and I also want to support my FLGS. Therefore I plan to obtain the rulebook and other items (starmap, screens) from my FLGS while getting the AP from Paizo directly (because the free PDF offsets the shipping costs for small books).
I will also buy the core rulebook PDF from Paizo as I prefer to have this both in PDF and in print.

Oh, I might also mention that there is a possibility that Starfinder PDFs might not be granted until release date even to subscribers. As I recall, that was the case when the Pathfinder CRB came out, to prevent details from spilling out before its big premiere at Gen Con.
Hopefully, details like that will be revealed when the sub(s) is/are announced.

Good point. I think I read too quickly and made some incorrect assumptions about what potus98 meant there.

Thanks for letting us know! I've consolidated all of your preorders into one order, and you'll be receiving an updated confirmation email in just a moment. Please feel free to review it and make sure everything looks correct. If anything needs to be adjusted or if you have any questions in the meantime, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will be more than happy to assist you.
Thanks!
I just emailed Customer service about consolidating my preorders as well.

I cannot express how disappointed I would be if Paizo doesn't send preorders because they want to premiere it at Gen Con. Having my copy shipped while I'm at Gen Con seems to defeat the purpose of preordering, unless they allow people to pick up their copy there.
I almost suspect they are not revealing that option because they don't want a massive influx of preorders that requires them to bring more books to the Con. I'm hoping that they do make it an option when the preordering window ends.

Any news on a timeframe for subscription announcements?
This can't continue, paizo! I need some new snippets. Let me obsess over the wording of the subscription option(s) for a while! :)

Ducks are being herded into neat little rows throughout the company.
Thanks, Vic. I'm spending way too much effort on preemptive storage. :)

This is still an issue, I just checked.

Just as an additional voice, I am waiting for subscriptions to be available before I commit to ordering anything Starfinder. I don't want to preorder and lose out on the pdfs. Just check my name line to see how serious I am about subscriptions! :)
I add my voice to this, I preordered almost everything, but I would like the PDFs as well. I will definitely be subscribing as well..

We expect to be sending our August releases which include the Starfinder products to our distribution network so that they can send orders out to stores in time for their release on August 17th. However, because we do not distribute directly to stores, we cannot know if your particular local store is expecting to have them in stock for the release date.
You can always ask your local game store if they are planning on ordering Starfinder books and if they expect to have them for the release. When customers put a bug in their ear about a product, they in turn start asking distributors about the product, which helps distributors know how large of an order to place with us.
TL;DR If you plan on purchasing Starfinder* through a game store, let them know in advance if that's something you're cool with doing. The more information stores and distributors have to operate with, the better.

Thanks Sara Marie! I'm going to put in a preorder at my local store right now. I'm leaving for vacation on 8/19 and was hoping to take along the core rulebook to read.

I was hoping for a subscription announcement at Paizocon, but as I didn't hear one, my question is:
Will the AP subscription be a separate subscription? I have heard rumours that the subscription may be for everything.

We will have a few different subscription offerings. (They will look very similar to the Pathfinder subscription offerings.)
All I needed to hear, Vic. Now I can confirm some of my pre-orders with my FLGS.
While I will gladly continue to support Paizo directly, it works best for me to subscribe to some products and get others from the store (largely due to shipping/customs, and because I tend to get accessories
as needed or on impulse).
My anticipation level for this game is hitting the red line.

Is there going to be something resembling the Pathfinder Advantage discount for Starfinder Adventure Path subscribers?

![]() |

Are you guys still targeting July to know more about pre ordering and picking up books at GenCon?
Yes. (The "hold for subscription pickup" checkbox will affect the very next subscription shipment after you check it, so the Gen Con pickup option can only be made available after the July subs have shipped.)

There will be something resembling that, yes. But this is one place where it won't exactly mirror Pathfinder (and that's all I can say for now).

If I preorder all the Starfinder products I'm going to buy through paizo, will they arrive by the release date or will they ship on the release date.
Do you guys benefit from people buying your products on Amazon? If so, does Amazon ship to arrive by release date or ship on the the release date? Their suggested release date says September 5th, so it worries me that ordering through Amazon will cause my products to ship far later after the release.
