Can you build a Slayer and Ranger in PFS?

Advice

I was wondering if you could build a PFS character and have it take levels from both Slayer and Ranger. A while ago I was under the impression you could not, then at a recent sit down game for PFS I was told it is now legal to build a slayer/ranger since they removed slayer as a sub class of ranger. was wondering if that is correct. Many thanks.

You could, but I'm not sure why you would. There isn't much to gain from that. A slayer with a level dip of unchained rogue for the finesse is possible though.

The only draw for such a build I can see is if the Ranger Combat Styles stacked but they don't.

Nothing saying you can't, but the ACG does warn you you get redundant features.

In the playtest version of the ACG there were rules specifically preventing you from taking the parent classes of a hybrid, but that text wasn't included in the final printed version.

just wondering if it would be viable to build a ranger/slayer where the ranger combat is archery and the slayer combat is melee. and would freebooters bane stacks with studied target.

I don't know about that, but I have a slayer 2/rogue 4 who has both combat trick and a combat style. great way to get a lot of feats in a hurry

My gut tells me this should be legit. But you should do a search in rules questions to make sure. I'm pretty sure others have previously discussed this.

And it's actually a pretty good idea...

Edit: Freebooters Bane definetly stacks with studied target (untyped bonuses). However both require move actions to activate.

The drawback to going Slayer/Ranger for two styles is that you aren't getting style feat 2 on both until level 12, and you wont get feat 3 for even one style until level 16. Both classes also have level-scaling buffs and features that don't necessarily multiclass well.

On a practical level, it would probably be much better to cross either class with something that buffs combat directly in only a few levels. Just a few levels of Fighter will grant a bunch of bonus feats, and possibly Weapon Training and/or some archetype features and/or Advanced Weapon Training. A few levels of Unchained Rogue can grant major game-changer benefits. A couple levels of Snakebite Striker Brawler gets melee flurry you can build on. And so on.

To add to this. If you want a switch hitter it is usually best to go with twohander which requires some strength and one feat - Power Attack. There is no value in skipping prereqs which is the benefit of these classes.

Both classes also benefit form getting to higher levels. Study Target's action economy gets better and rangers want to get Instant Enemy.

Honestly, If I had to go Ranger/Slayer, I'd go five levels of Wild Stalker/ Skirmisher Ranger for the Rage, Rage Power and Hunter's Trick. Then I'd build a Slayer with some Extra Rage. Both melee and ranged benefit very nicely from +4STR and a Furious weapon, there are a few really awesome Hunter's Tricks, and access to basic Rage Powers has it's uses.
