Two-Handed weapons and finesse training

What is the benefit to using a 2H weapon with weapon finesse over using a 1H weapon? The damage dice might be a bit better, depending on the weapon, but is that all?

If you get Dex to attack and damage, using a weapon 2-handed won't give you bonus strength damage.

Sorry if this sounds a little rambly. I'm not real sure how to word this question.

As far as I know, the only 2H weapons that finesse training can apply to are the Elven Curve Blade and the spiked chain, so it doesn't apply to many options right off the bat.

I believe that since you get Dex in place of Strength, using the weapon 2-handed would give you 1.5xDex bonus to damage, unless there's a FAQ I'm unaware of that doesn't allow it.

Don't worry about sounding rambly. The message came across.

i think you can get 1.5 dex to damage if youre using a 2 handed finesse weapon. i remember there was some contention about that back in the day but i think it came out in favor of the dex bonus. if it turns out you dont get the bonus dex damage though, id imagine the benefit would be that someone whos built mostly for ranged fighting will be able to switch to melee more easily.

is this for the unchained rogue? because if it is you do get 1.5x dex to damage for using a 2h weapon theres the elven curve blade, the estoc, the elvin pike and spike chain for the use of this there may be a few more but its all i know of

Phntm888 there is a FAQ but it states exactly what you said 2-handed finesse able weapons get 1.5x dex damage with unchained rogues Finesse Training. they are few and far between 3 in total, the two you mention and the elven branch spear.

Unchained Rogue Finesse Training: When I'm replacing Strength for Dexterity, what happens with a one-handed weapon? What about an off-hand weapon?

With a two-handed weapon, you add 1-1/2 times your Dexterity bonus on damage rolls, and with an off-hand weapon, you add half your Dexterity bonus on damage rolls. As per the ability's text, if an effect would prevent you from adding your Strength modifier on damage rolls, you don't add your Dexterity modifier. However, any other effects that would increase the multiplier to your Strength bonus on damage rolls (such as the two-handed fighter archetype's overhand chop) do not affect your Dexterity bonus on damage rolls.

There is also reach weapons like the Elven branched spear that allow finesse.

The entire list as of right now of two handed finesse weapons that can benefit from 1.5 dex damage are: Aldori Dueling Sword, Bladed Scarf, Elven Curve Blade, Elven Branch Spear, Estoc, and the Spiked Chain.

Okay, so there were other 2-handed finesse weapons. Gives a few more options, at least.

Thank you for letting me know about the FAQ, KainPen and graystone. If the situation ever comes up at my table, I now have some guidance for the interactions with other abilities that increase the multiplier for the Strength bonus and Finesse training.

EDIT: Imbicatus, I thought the Aldori Dueling Sword needed to be wielded in one hand for Weapon Finesse benefits to apply. I know you need to have the proficiency for it in order to use Weapon Finesse with it.

It is indeed from unchained rogue.

Wow. Thanks for all the responses. I was unaware of the 1.5xDex. Thank you all for pointing that out.

I consider that FAQ to just be clarifying rules, rather than making rules. It's just that most of the other forms of dex to damage prevent the two-handed damage boost. The feat options require a weapon wielded in one hand. And the Agile weapon property explicitly doesn't allow the increase.

About the only other option that should give 1.5x to dex damage is the mythic weapon finesse.

Scarab Sages

You can use it with finesse if you have proficiency. It specifically allows you to wield it with two hands for 1.5 str to damage, it doesn't disallow finesse when doing so.

The main reason would be getting the better trade on power attack and the option to use THW only feats, aka pushing assault or Furious Focus.

I've found that reach + combat reflexes synergises well with dex as a main stat. For myself, power attack and THW only feats are of much lesser import as the unchained rogue isn't rolling around in available feats [especially as the finesse THW itself is exotic and needs a feature/feat to take] and often have str prerequisites in a dump stat for a finesse player. YMMV, of course, especially if you're multiclass/gestalt.

Didn't realize this was the URogue, I thought it was base weapon finesse/the fighter AWT to get finesse. That's what I get for not reading the entire thread before posting. The first few made it seem like it wasn't about the Urogue.

It's a gestalt URogue and Magus. We houseruled 2H were okay with Spell combat (seperate issue). I'm leaning toward switching over to Dex based now :)

Hmmm... Even with "base weapon finesse/the fighter AWT" I don't think I'd set aside Str points for THW prerequisite, though if I could pick them up without prerequisites [such as ranger style feats] then that's a different story. Dex, Con and Wis and maybe Int are already a priority.

Yep, with that Str and Cha are you only dump stats. I wouldn't advise a Str bigger than what you need to carry your equipment for that build. Since you'll be swimming in skill points [int class + rogue skill points] you can always take profession [porter] as a DC 15 check allows you to "Increase carrying capacity for 8 hours as if Strength were 2 higher". Just get Wis + skill ranks = 5 and a take 10 [or take 20 is you have the time] and you'll save 2 points of Str for other stats. ;)

Thanks for the advice Graystone. Maybe I should make a post about a build for this...

Off topic, where is there information about other uses of the Profession skill like your example with Porter?
