Recruitment

1 to 50 of 100 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Hello everyone, I’m looking at recruiting 4-6 players for a long term 5E game. Right now I’m looking at some sort of AP, either a Paizo one or a WotC one. However, I can probably be persuaded to run a series of modules if the party was more interested in that.

About me: I’m a long time poster on these boards who has alot of PbP experience. I’ve run several PF games including A series of modules/homebrew campaign set in Darkmoon Vale and an ongoing Iron Gods game currently at Book 3 and several others. Please take a look at my profile and campaigns to see if my style matches yours. I’m a consistent GM who makes daily posts and I expect the same from my players. If you cannot handle 10-15 posts per week with an absolute minimum of one post per day this might not be the game for you.

Maps/Pictures/Handouts: I use Google Docs very extensively, if you have trouble accessing that, this might not be the game for you.

Ok then, still have your attention….great.

I’m recruiting players, not characters, so I don’t really care about mechanics in this thread. I want you to sell me on YOU. Information I’m looking for includes

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
What is your preferred post rate for games?
What is your most active posting times?
Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.

By no means am I only looking for experienced players, I don’t mind taking in newbies. I have in several of my games. This is gonna be a long term game, and so will be a long term commitment so please keep that in mind.

I wholesale stole this next part from two other GM’s on these boards because I liked their format and their rules. GM Damo and GM Giuseppe
were the original authors.

I strongly recommend reading the threads below, they provide a wealth of information on the PbP format.
Doomed Hero's Guide to PbP An awesome introduction to PbP. Don't miss his second post on that thread with some "advanced tips", too.
Painlord's further tips builds on Doomed Hero's work.

Things I expect
These are more of a requirement than a guide. Players who do not comply will be asked to improve and eventually asked to leave. Think of these things as non-optional "table" etiquette.

Have Fun and be Civil:

No, seriously, have fun. If you're not having fun, why are you playing? Please be aware though that this is a social game and your fun might not be someone else’s fun or my own fun. So, to that end if you find you're not having fun in one of my games, please send me a PM and I'll do my utmost to rectify the situation. If it can't be resolved, I'm perfectly happy for you to leave the game. This is about all of us enjoying ourselves.

Post frequently:

I require a post every 24 hours as an absolute minimum. This might mean you have to check the thread a couple times a day. I need posts from every player every day even if it's just a “Throgg waits for the stupid Rogue to finish his stuff” type post. This makes sure our post rate stays up, and it lets me know you are still here and still active. Seriously, post. Alot. Unusual real life events notwithstanding, I will be prepared to post at least twice a day.
If you cannot post within 24 hours for any reason, please let me know. I will be happy to bot you as required until you're back to normal.

Vital statistics:

Put your vital stats in your forum tag line. It really helps for those situations when a GM needs to make a roll for the whole party (eg. everyone makes a Dex save). That means I can easily do the rolls, resolve all the effects and move the game along in a single post.
How to post vital stats:

When you edit the profile for your alias, anything that appears these fields will appear on your tagline in posts on a PbP thread (in this order):
1. Gender
2. Race
3. Classes/Levels
All you need to do is put your vital stats in these three fields and you are good to go.

Here is a viable Template for putting info in your tagline
Init +2 | HP 15/15 | AC 13 | S-1/D+4/C+1/I+2/W+0/C+5 | Perc +2 |

Tips and advice
These pointers (gained from my experience and the above two guides) are aimed to help you to make the game more fun for everyone. Key to this is readable descriptions and posts that help the game to flow and progress.

Doomed Hero's Commandments:

These are so good, that I've included these verbatim (except for correcting his "Ye Olde" English):
Thou Shalt Avoid Walls Of Text
Thou Shalt Not Hog The Spotlight
Thou Shalt Not Assume The Actions Of Others
Thou Shalt Not Assume Outcomes Of Actions
Thou Shalt Not Derail Gameplay
Thou Shalt Use The Discussion Thread

Formatting your posts:

Format speech in bold with the quotes still there. This helps to draw attention to what the character is actually saying (as opposed to what you are saying about the character).
Eg. Jambon the Ranger runs back to the party. "Goblins around the corner, beware!"
Use "ooc" tags to say things out of character. It puts your post in blue and helps GMs and players alike to tell when you are talking about mechanics and when you are talking about your character.
Eg. Jambon tries to squeeze through the door. Do I need to make an escape artist check or something?
Make sure to use the discussion thread for "ooc" text that is not relevant to your current post.
For some cool ideas on how else to format your text, see Doomed hero's advanced tips

Writing style:

Use Third Person Limited and write in the Simple Present* tense. Full stop. If for no other reason, it will keep everyone's posts consistent. It is also what most PbP posters use.
* Note that we are specifically using the Simple Present to describe something that 'is true in the present' (ie. what our character is doing).

Keep it moving:

Painlord says "Always be pushing" but I think "Keep it moving" captures it a little better. After all, you can pull as well as push. The main idea is to always provide a hook for another character to pick up on and keep the game moving towards the goal. If your post doesn't provide a way forwards, consider revising it. After all, we do want to finish the adventure some time this century, right?
Eg. Post that doesn't keep it moving.
Jambon sits down, head in hands, heavily wounded and exhausted from the fight.
Eg. Simple modification to the above that keeps it moving.
Jambon sits down, head in hands, heavily wounded and exhausted from the fight. "Well, friends, looks like we all need a rest. Shall we set up camp for the night?"

Maps:

For all my games, I use Google Draw to simulate minis and a play mat / game board. They are publicly editable (with the link) and you shouldn't need a Google account to use them.
Everyone needs to update their own positions or be really specific with their description of movement as part of their posts.
Please, please, please write about how your character moves in the post. Don't just say "see my location on the map". That will help to maintain the roleplaying flavor and also make sure we don't have to constantly flick between the map and the gameplay thread to find out what's going on. It can also help me to adjudicate what happens as you move. But the most important reason is: your position on the map will change over time, but your post will not. Describe your movement.
Finally, in adjudicating movement (mostly for attacks of opportunity and traps) I will assume you take the most direct route to an enemy while still avoiding attacks of opportunity and hazards. If you close to a square and you can't get there within your available movement without provoking, I will make an AoO against you. Otherwise, though, I will assume your character doesn't move like a brain-damaged zombie and avoids such things. If you would like to specify how you move, please use a dashed line to show where you moved (or describe it if you're posting from a phone).

Here be yer questions and mine answers:

How experienced of a PbP player are you?

I'm sort of new to PbP but not to Pathfinder/D&D. I had one particularly successful game here on the forums which was to be a series of PFS modules set in Andoran starting with Hollow's Last Hope (unfortunately the GM had to abandon the campaign for work reasons, but at least she told us, so hey). The other two ended up dying slowly, and I'd like to think that those weren't my fault. I've got another alias of a character who never got into a game as well, but yeah.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
Preferred posting rate is once a day at minimum. Even if its something in the discussion thread to let us know you don't have time to post. Anything at all is better than just slowly vanishing.

What is your most active posting times?
Most active posting times are actually the weekend contrary to most people, but otherwise morning or late evening I get something in. Tuesday and Thursday morning I'm also available for posting. I'm a student and I work part time, hence why my timetable is like that.

Are there days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
I may be out of town for Mother's day, but other than that and other holidays, it shouldn't be impossible for me to post on a daily basis.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?

  • I usually GM whenever my friends and I play a home game, so I understand the difficulties associated. I'd be more than willing to share the load for bookkeeping or anything else. I just really want to play a hero for once.
  • I like roleplaying characters with more than one dimension, I'm not a huge fan of silly characters. Not to say I hate funny characters period, but if you're a player character and your one thing is to make fun of everything it can get exhausting.
  • I like Pathfinder because I first got into PnP from D&D 3.5 but its so full of details I feel like it detracts from the experience sometimes. Like when you're trying to figure out how the hell grappling under water works. I haven't played 5e yet, but I've taken a read through the player's guide and it is definitely slimmer than PF/3.5 which is a plus in my book.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
I think I'd like a Paizo AP, just because the Golarion Campaign setting is so much easier to read and access than other things in my opinion. I wouldn't mind some other setting especially if you're more comfortable with it, but I already have a lot of setting knowledge in Golarion for good or for worse.

Also, do you have an estimated start date? Like next month around this time, or something like that?

Grand Lodge

I would be interested, but I have to be careful about spreading myself too thin. I am running 2 RL games, 1 series of 5e AL games (1 at a time, in which I believe you are playing), and about to embark on another RL one. With a FT job, I have to be careful about burnout. :(

I wanted to chime in that I prefer short modules so that people can rotate in and out, but you could still have a core group that remains the same. If they are shorter arcs, then I would strongly consider making an appearance once in a while. :)

First I would like to say that I am impressed with your choice of recruiting players instead of characters. I think it's important for a party to be built together and this is something missed out on in a lot of PbPs. I also really want to get a sense of comradery with the other players that I haven't gotten yet in PbP and this format might help with that.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
I've been playing in PbP games for a couple years now on here and other forums, but none to completion either from too many players leaving, or the GM leaving, or in a couple cases not geling with the GM's style. I play for fun and I have had GMs in the past that run PbP more like they are the boss and this is a job.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
While I think post rate is very important I think the kind of ebb and flow a PbP game can have is actually a good thing as long as player's stay invested. After everyone posting in a flurry over a few days because very interesting events are happening it can be quite relaxing to return to a post a day for a period of time. One post a day (except weekends) is usually a very good starting point.

What is your most active posting times?
Probably in the evenings PST, but I often find times to post through out the day. I will be moving to the east coast in August and my post time will be shifted by three hours.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
I am a university student (starting my Masters in September), so the time around Finals can get dicey, I still try to post, but it can be less convenient. I also visit family for the winter holidays for a couple weeks and the internet out there can be a bit spotty, I still try to post then too.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
I'm a physics major in school. I enjoy all kinds of gaming as my hobbies including miniature wargames, video games and board games. I also greatly enjoy reading and writing fiction and am hoping to start sending out manuscripts to publishers within the next year, but we'll see how that goes. I've been into D&D since I was a young child. My older brother got me playing and I haven't really stopped since. PbP gives me a more story driven, roleplay heavy and slightly more serious experience than I have ever gotten in real life and I greatly enjoy that. I also am a huge fan of the 5E rules and would like more chance to play in them.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
I am definitely more interested in playing an AP than modules. I've never had a chance to have a long term campaign come to completion and I am constantly searching for chances to do so. I would honestly be happy with nearly any of the APs that exist, WotC or Paizo.

Liberty's Edge

Hi GM Niles...glad to see you back! I would love to participate in a long term game with you as DM! Can I bring Duncan along?? LOL

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
Well I have been around these boards for many years! I have enjoyed a great number of different games with many different DMs. I have even run a few myself, and for the most part have enjoyed my time here.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
At least once per day, but I get worried when a specific posting limit is set. I usually post in response to what is happening in the game, or to keep things moving. Posting just to make a quota seems very forced to me. Once a day is the bare minimum, I would say.

What is your most active posting times?
Usually during the day on weekdays. I try to check at night and on weekends, but having a family cuts into some of that time for me.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
Nothing is impossible, but RL does sometimes rear its ugly head. I try to keep my DM appraised of anything that might impact my posting.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
Well I am loving the 5th edition of D&D and enjoying playing in any game using it. I know the rules pretty well, and always try to work with my party to reach our goals. I feel that I am a strong support character you can sometimes come to the forefront when needed. Team work is important to me, and having a good group of players that respect each other is paramount to a good game.
About myself...lets see. Been role playing since the 1970's and have played almost every game out there (I think). Personally, I am the director of a museum and have a background in medieval and ancient history, as well as contemporary (19th-21st Century) Canadian history and material culture. Currently I live in the Northwest Territories.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
Anything really! I am really likeing the trend to play some of the old 1-2 edition modules. Would love to tackly the "G" series sometime.

Hi GM Niles! This would be my first PbP, but I have been wanting to join a game for a few weeks now. I would be thrilled to join your game - you have laid out your expectations very nicely, which is helpful for a newbie.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
I am totally new to PbP, but I've been playing Pathfinder and D&D for some years in different forms.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
A least once a day - I'm pretty excited about it, so I will likely check more frequently.

What is your most active posting times?
Lunchtime and after 5pm PDT time on weekdays, and during the day on weekends.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
Big physics collaborations require a lot of travel - I'll be on long flights about twice a month, and conferences usually eat up ~10 hour blocks for a few days every 3-4 months. I should know at least a few weeks in advance when I'll be in the air, and months beforehand for a conference.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
I just moved across the US for a new position and I quite miss the regular games I had back east. I love storytelling. I'm most interested in collaboration, group problem solving, and character interactions. (I see you seem to be collecting interesting, respectful, and committed players, which I find very appealing.)
About me: I'm a physicist, working on a large-scale physics experiment in California. I really enjoy traveling, blues/funk/rock music, and a good fantasy or sci-fi novel.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
I'm up for anything. I will probably need to brush up on the rules for a newer edition game, but I can be a quick study.

@Kubular I'm thinking of starting this one the Week of May 2. Thank you for showing interest! What Paizo AP would you like to play? I have most of them in PDF format due to sales throughout the years, but I'd be willing to buy the ones I don't own.

Full disclosure, I'm being sent to Las Vegas by the military from May 13-27th but I should still be able to make posts from my laptop at the hotel.

@Aeshurra You are more than welcome to apply in this one if you are interested and you think you have the time, keep in mind that I run a fairly fast paced game. I actually wouldn't mind doing a series of Modules, that's how I started here on these forums running PF Module D0.

@PaleKing I certainly don't view Gming as a Boss/Job thing(In fact, I do most of my posting from work as a kind of "unwinding excercise"), but I do believe that gaming is a social experience and there are certain expectations that should be followed. Most of my angst in my PbP games revolve around everyone not sharing the responsibility for moving the game forward.

@Daniel Duncan is more than welcome! However, he might have to start back at 1st level depending on what we decide to run.

@Mikkel Madsen Welcome to the forums!

RE:5E ruleset It's pretty easy to learn, if you understand the basics of the d20 system then 5E is a breeze. It's MUCH easier than Pathfinder/3.X. There is an SRD somewhere on the internet that provides the basic rules and a few of the races and classes. I can work with anyone to help them understand the rules, that isn't a problem.

The official SRD

Thank you Steve!

How experienced of a PBP player are you: I've tried to get started in a few PBP games but life has got in the way and they never went very far, at least not for me. I have a great deal of gaming experience, but the whole PBP thing is still relatively new to me.

What is your preferred post rate for games: I think the post rate should keep up with the flow of the game, but I think it can also be overwhelming sometimes if everyone is posting multiple times per day. I think once per day is good and it's probably what I'll definitely be able to commit to.

What are your most active post times: More than likely it will be in the evenings CST but there may be afternoon posts here and there.

Are there going to be days/weeks where posting will be impossible for whatever reason? There really shouldn't be, at least not in the foreseeable future.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game? I am an avid gamer, I've been playing D&D since I was 10 back with AD&D 2nd Ed and pen and paper RPGs have made up some of the best times in my life. I have been looking for a regular group of players for years now as I moved away from my last group and just haven't found another. If I get the opportunity I'd just love to hang out and have fun with a bunch of folks looking for the same thing.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else. I'm pretty open as to what I'd like to play, although I've been looking over some of the 5E campaign books and something like elemental evil or curse of strahd might be fun. However, if I do get in, whatever the group decides will be cool with me.

Citing sources of materials you've used. Well done sir, well done.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
I only recently got into PbP about a month ago or so when Humble Bundle partnered with Paizo to release that massive list of pdfs. I love TTRPGs and since no one in my town plays, I had to go online. Since then, I have joined many games and have learned to use the various tools of the site such as url's, spoilers, italics, and bold. I might be missing a few tricks, but I got the basics down.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
I'm alright with the standard one post per weekday standard. Though, since I'm online almost everyday I usually post regularly on the weekends as well (as long as i feel as I'm not over-posting). I will mention my posting is usually reactive in nature, meaning that I usually check to post when I see others have posted after me.

What is your most active posting times?
Hoo boy, back to the almost always online thing. Most reliable times are morning around 9 am (CST), various points in mid-day, and before bed after10 pm. I like to keep up with the story of the game so I tend to read the updates even when I'm not able to post (such as on my smartphone).

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
Normally, these will be special events such as commitments I must keep. But as I usually have my laptop to watch videos on, if there's wi-fi, I will post. I do have finals coming up in a month or so, but if I need an absence I'll inform before hand.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
I enjoy the depth of character, and how real they can become. I especially love how flaws can bring crucial story moments to life even if the player knows that doing so would be detrimental.
I also enjoy the classic mesh of a balanced party, how each character has something unique and different to bring to create a volatile, but effective solution to a problem.
Non-rpg related notes: currently attending college for networking, avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, listens to more podcasts than music.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
I'm open to playing either option as I don't have that much experience in 5e currently.

Hey, GM Niles - outstanding method of recruitment. I have gamed with you in too many PbPs to count, and I am definitely interested in adding another long-term 5E game. So, without further ado...your answers are as follows.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?

I have been involved in dozens of PbPs over the last 6-7 years. I can honestly say that I have seen the best and worst of the gaming format. I also believe that you are right on the money with your approach to getting a long-term game to stick on the boards - recruiting players instead of PCs. I have seen too many PbPs fizzle because of 1-2 Players.

What is your preferred post rate for games?

I prefer 1-2 times a day at a minimum. I able to reach that level of posting, and players committed to the game more than likely can also post at that level. Of course, botting a PC who has an issue with a short absence is also warranted and recommended when RL gets in the way.

What is your most active posting times?

Between 8am-11am EST and again between 5-7pm EST.

Are there days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?

No, other than holidays, and even then, I usually am able to get a post off.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?

I am a GM and player in a weekly tabletop game, and I have been playing some form of D&D since the 1980's. I am not a rules lawyer, but I think they should be followed as written. I am also NOT a metagamer or min/maxer. I tend to enjoy roleplyaing my PCs and creating them within the core rule set that is being used. I do not multi-class or spend much time trying to optimize my PCs. I think that standard races and classes work very well within the rules as written, and the true wealth of a PC comes from how the player roleplays and plays the PC as he/she evolves within the game. Finally, I am always interested in the group cooperative dynamic. Synergies between PCs only makes the game more enjoyable for all.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.

I am very familiar with most settings and thus, do not really have a preference. Having said that, I do like the idea of a Greyhawk campaign like Temple of Elemental Evil or Slave Pits of the Undercity for 5E. I am also most familiar with Golarion and Forgotten Realms.

Wow that's a lot more specific than I thought, thanks a bunch. I was mostly just curious, though I would have been a bit disappointed if you said it would take until June or something like that.

You know, I'd be happy with a series of modules too, especially if that's the majority vote. I'm not sure about a particular AP at the moment but I've already run Kingmaker at home and I'm in the middle of Rise of the Runelords at the moment, so not either of those two. Is there an AP that you've been wanting to run?

Personally, the only AP I'm currently running is Iron Gods and so I'm not interested in doing that one 5E. I've run Reign of Winter(2/3 through Book 1) and Wrath of the Righteous(Up to 2/3 finished with Book2) here on the boards, RoW I closed due to player inactivity and WotR was the same coupled with the mind boggling annoyance of the Mythic rules making everything take 3x longer than it should.

I'm not interested in all at rehashing WoTR. Reign of Winter I think could be fun as a 5E game.

I'm not a big fan of Kingmaker, Second Darkness or Council of Thieves.

If I were picking right now, I'd pick an AP like Giantslayer or Mummy's Mask. Probably Giantslayer.

As far as a "burning desire" to run one certain AP, the only one I've ever felt that way about was Iron Gods. I was feeling that way about Hell's Rebels, but then I reassessed my devotion to Pathfinder as a ruleset.

It is uncanny, but those are the same Pathfinder APs that I started and never finished online. I also have not participated in Giantslayer, Iron Gods, or Hell's Rebels. I switched entirely to 5E with my tabletop game and online shortly after its inception.

I definitely agree that players have an obligation to keep the game moving. I just don't want to fun and cooperation of the game to be forgotten.

Giantslayer could be a lot of fun, whenever I read about it I get this wave of nostalgia that seems very odd to get for a newer adventure path, but it just sounds like a classic. (This could be because my elder brother loves giants as enemies when he DMs). If you were having a burning desire to run Hell's Rebels would that not be something to consider playing in 5E as well?

Certainly I wouldn't be opposed to a Hell's Rebels game. I'd have to do some thinking about the Rebellion mechanics and how that would work in 5E.

Shadow Lodge

I'd be happy with any of the above, I'd actually thought of suggesting Giantslayer when you asked, on account of it being so popular, but I wanted to keep our options open. Hell's Rebels might end up being more trouble than it's worth, from what I saw, the system was basically the Kingmaker system (Which was awful as written) with very few improvements. But I hear good things about it, so who am I to judge?

Something homebrew would also be pretty sweet, in any case.

I am in no way saying I'll do a 100% homebrew campaign. That is honestly much too much work for me.

I can do a series of Modules set in a generic fantasyland (or Golarion, or Greyhawk or Faerun) but I'm not about writing adventures whole cloth.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?

I've been playing PbP only since last year. Some of the games have died out, some are still running. I need to improve the concept of "being pushing", I think; I'm not always able to post witty and spectacular easy-to-follow things, though I try at least to interact (if I feel I'm not cutting off the mojo).

What is your preferred post rate for games?

I work in the afternoons/evenings (though see about my Time Zone, below), so usually I can post twice or thrice a day easily, even more, in working days.

What is your most active posting times?

That would be my mornings and my late evenings (from about 23:00 onwards). My Time Zone, though, is GMT+1. I guess that means that my mornings are your late evenings and my late evenings are your dinner time or so. More or less.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?

Usually my gf comes to stay for the weekend, so I dedicate less time to internet, but that doesn't mean I can't try to sneak in a post a day (though won't be 100%).

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?

I'm a 37 y.o. guy from Southern Spain. I live alone and work in the afternoons as a teacher for adults. That means I usually have time for checking the forums and posting.
I've only recently entered the PbP world, though I've been playing RPGs since I was 14. Currently, I am on a RL Star Wars campaign which we play Monday afternoons. I'm also involved in some PbP games here on Paizo.
I'm not the flashy-witty-super-next-Nobel-Prize kind of poster. I like writing, and I've written some short stories, but I still have a lot to learn and I don't feel I'm even close to be good at it. I'm usually better at short descriptions which help the readers get an idea but let them use their own imagination to fill up the details. That's why I am a terrible GM! :) Also, my native language is not English, so sometimes I feel like I want to bite more than I can chew. But that can only improve, right?
So, basically, what's good about me? Well, probably that I didn't make up a lot of fancy facts about myself which won't correspond to reality :P In truth, I'm not that bad, and you can check my profile for some posts in my games, to see if you like what you read (an image is worth more than a thousand words, as we say...).

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.

Really, anything that's good. Since I never played an AP to the end, I can't judge.

That's about it, I guess. Feel free to ask anything you want to know.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
I have been playing for over a year on PbP and enjoy the format as it allows my busy life to play more games which is my major hobby. Being a father and a working fellow cuts into gaming time to be sure.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
so far many posts have said they would post daily but none have, and if you check the post rate you can see that I post as soon as there is a post to follow up on. I work firmly to do rp and also not interrupt but move games along.

What is your most active posting times?
I post every day both in the morning as I am a teacher of 10th grade English Literature and during my break in the afternoon, as well as sometimes once or twice before I go to bed as far as checking on posts.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
end of the quarter for teachers are pretty insane and every other weekend I plan family dates with the kids instead of chores all the time lol

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?

I have played since chainmail (the white books) 1st ed red and blue books, all the way along through greyhawk live, pathfinder as a four star GM, and world of darkness as a local GM for almost ten years. I love gaming and love the story, and the character is of the most interest to me as a spirit of the game sort of guy. I just started playing 5e within the last month and it seems enjoyable.[

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.

Game on with what makes you have the most pleasure running and watching the players in. The more fun the GM has the better the game is!

I have played ravenloft completely, Serpents Call (pathfinder) Shattered Star, Skulls and Shackles, and am playing a couple of home brews now Pbp

I have a newbie question for you GM Niles (or others): How do your players usually communicate out of game? I figure if there's downtime between posts that might be a good way to keep some momentum going, and a fun opportunity to get to know your teammates. Is there something you use outside of the forums, like a google hangout?

The Discussion thread in the game, or by private message works just fine for most games.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
I have been active on the paizo.com boards for years. If it's a character I am really into I will add depth if it's something I am still getting a grip on it will be strictly crunch.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
Usually once a day it will be more if in a role play scene with someone particularly active.

What is your most active posting times?
1630-2230 EST.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
Impossible, no. Wednesdays get a bit touchy because I run Adventure League.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
Active poster for years, if I get to play the character of my design it will be good exercises in descriptions of combat and I usually have characters with quite a bit of depth and personality.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
I'd be down for anything as long as I get a ninja fight. Curse of Strahd or Jade Regent, homebrew in Faerun or Golarian s I nice I know the most about them.

How experienced of a PbP player are you?
I've been playing through one of the Beginner's Bash scenarios and I've been on the Paizo board just over a month. I played D&D Basic/Expert and AD&D 1E a long time ago. I took an interest in RPGs again last year and jumped on the recent Pathfinder Humble Bundle. Since then I've also picked up the 5E PHB, though I've given the Pathfinder rules more attention. I've got a handle on the basics. From a practical standpoint, PbP works best for me right now.

What is your preferred post rate for games?
At least once per day. I check frequently, and if I can post something in 5 minutes I do, but if it's more involved I'll set aside time for it. I'm still at a point where I need to dig up reference materials for a lot of combat scenarios.

What is your most active posting times?
Usually in the afternoon and evening, EST.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?
I'll be on vacation at the end of April for a week. I'm still making the effort to devote even a small amount of time to any games I'm in at that time. BBCode isn't fun on a phone, but it's doable.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?
I'm in my early 40s and work in IT. I'm frequently doing something stupid at 3AM. I last played TTRPGs in high school, and I'm impressed with how the system has evolved over the years. I've been having fun immersing myself in all this again and getting up to speed.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.
I'm an old-school dungeon crawler. I'm still getting up to speed on Golarian and the Forgotten Realms, and I don't really have a favorite right now. I respect the massive world-building they've all done so far. I'm looking to have fun, first and foremost.

@Jereru I've been gaming with some guys in GMT(England) and GMT+1 (Norway) since 2014. It actually works out great since they post after work and that's during my peak posting times.

@Edelsmirge That's awesome, I'm also in education.

@Mikkel Madsen We use the discussion tab or PMs

@TPJ Welcome to the boards! I too "rediscovered" TTRPGS after abandoning them when I finished college. I was in a face to face game but found that I was always stressed for time due to work/family. PbP has been my TTRPG outlet.

Ok, so I've been doing a lot of thinking about it, I think I might run TWO games. One would be module based, the other would be AP based. This would both satisfy my need for a long term based campaign AND get new people interested in PbP a chance to experience how it works and not be saddled with a long term time commitment.

Sounds great to me :)

I think I would like the long term based campaign now a bit better really givr me a chance to sink the teeth in

@Filios That's very useful to know, thanks!

@GM Niles If it's not too much work for you, that sounds awesome!

Liberty's Edge

Looking forward to it. What AP are you looking at playing and which module? I have not played Giantslayer before, or Hell's Rebels. Would still like to get Duncan into the game as I had plans for his future...lol

Grand Lodge

How experienced of a PbP player are you?

I suppose I have some experience with PbP games. I have found that I do not have the endurance for extremely long campaigns, as they tend to be a bit slower. I have a little more experience running short games. I ran a few PFS Scenarios a couple of years ago, and am on my second Adventurers League game of which you are playing both.

What is your preferred post rate for games?

I tend to check at various times during work, and can post several times a day. I would prefer that my DM post at least once a day, and would hope that the other players do as well.

What is your most active posting times?

My most active posting times are between 8 am and 4:30 pm HST (GMT -10) Fridays, I tend to leave work early and my posting cuts off about 10:30 am HST. Saturdays, I can post in spurts as household chores and errands may allow. Sunday, I can post once, or maybe twice, in the early morning and maybe again in the late afternoon.

Are their days/weeks where posting is impossible for whatever reason?

Usually about April, I have an annual Branch Managers meeting that I go to for a couple of days. When I go to that I have no internet access. Other than that, there may be times when posting gets pushed back to once a day at worst.

Let me know a little about you, why would you be a good fit in my game?

I enjoy story-first DM-ing styles. I am a story guy, and the character interaction is what I prefer. I have always longed for a group that grows to have strong bonds with each other, rather than every man for himself. I tend to play Good-aligned characters, so there isn't much carrot dangling needed to get me to spring into action.

What type of game are you interested in, Paizo AP (using 5E rules) or WotC AP or something else.

I prefer modules, and would love Adventurers League stuff especially, but it is not necessary. I also liked those little mini campaigns that came out for the D&D Next playtests. Having grown up with the Icewind Dale Trilogy, the Legacy of the Crystal Shard was an absolute delight (and there was no twin scimitar-wielding drow ranger to be seen at all either! ;p) Even those settings divorced of the adventure included was full of sand-boxy goodness! I heard that Murder at Baldur's Gate was really good too!

All that being said, I don't know if it would interest you, but I have always wanted to play Dragonlance paralleling the Companions during the War of the Lance. I tried to create a campaign for it myself, but I got stuck and ran out of steam.

Anyway, your post about running two separate runs, one campaign and one module-based, prompted me to throw my hat into the ring... Woo hoo!

Shadow Lodge

I had meant to say I would also be interested in a long-term homebrew campaign made of stitched together modules rather than made from scratch.

I'm not certain if I'll be keeping continuity with the module(s) or not. But that is exactly what I did with my Falcons Hollow campaign. We played in this (iirc) order
D0 Hollows Last Hope
D1 Crown of the Kobold King
PFS 1-43 Pallid Plague
E1 Carnival of Tears
D1.5 Revenge of the Kobold King
LB1 Tower of the Last Baron
D4 Hungry are the Dead

We had a ton of homebrewed and player initiated stuff in between those modules(like an election and clearing out a section of the Darkmoon Wood) and the entire thing took a little over 2 years.

I'll pose this question to everyone. If you were going to play a module(any module from any era of DnD/PF), which one would you want to play?

Liberty's Edge

A-series, G-series, D-series would be fun I think.

Hey Niles not sure if it's your sort of thing but I have a hankering to play something set in Ravenloft or maybe Athas. I note there is a 5e version of the classic Castle Ravenloft module.

@Kubular Nile's Hollows Last Hope campaign was great fun, I particularly enjoyed all the election skulduggery. Having run a campaign of my own on these boards with a lot of homebrew extras I came to realize that it's a ton of extra work for the GM.

I have no idea what all these numbers and letters mean, nor am I versed in D&D modules, so I really trust in you guys.

Liberty's Edge

A-Series: Scourge of the Slave Lords

A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity
A2 Secret of the Slavers Stockade
A3 Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords
A4 In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords

G-Series: Against the Giants

G1 Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
G2 Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl
G3 Hall of the Fire Giant King

D-Series: Descent Into the Depths of the Earth

D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth
D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa
D3 Vault of the Drow

These old AD&D 1st edition modules that could be viewed as the first Adventure Path games...lol

Yeah, I played in an G series campaign in high school. It was fun!

re:Curse of Strahd. Is it a full on remake or is it a reimagining? I'd have to check it out. I never played any Ravenloft stuff.

re:Dark Sun I don't have the stamina or writing ability to pull off a homebrew Dark Sun conversion.

Grand Lodge

Curse of Strahd is much of the original, but has expanded out to make a mini campaign (lvls 1-10).

It's a full on remake of the classic adventure. From what I've read it's heavier on the RP than hack and slash so it ought to work well as a PbP (I think there's at least one game of it on these boards).

Based on the level range (1-10) and the size of the book I'd imagine it would take about 12 months to run on these boards at your usual pace.

I am in two Curse of Strahd now...one PbP...one tabletop. I am with Daniel. I would love A Series, G Series or Temple of Elemental Evil. I know they have a 5E version for at least the A Series. So, you would nnot have to convert.

I am with Jereru - I don't have much experience with modules (I've done mostly homebrews) and I'd be happy to trust the group's judgement.

(@Daniel Stewart, that is helpful, thanks!)

I think series A would be fun, though G series is appealing as well.

Series A and D both sound intriguing to me. I'm not familiar enough with the newer 5E/PF material. Personally, I've also always wanted to play through the U series (The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Danger at Dunwater & The Final Enemy).

I've looked at the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh and it looks pretty cool as far as modules go. I also went ahead and ordered Curse of Strahd and it should be in pretty soon. In the meantime I could run the downloadable first chapter "Death House"

So, I guess what I'm saying is...I'll run Curse of Strahd for one group and Sinster Secret of Saltmarsh for another. The SSS module should take roughly 6 months? CoS about a year, maybe a little longer than that. Below is what I've gathered of everyone's stated preferences. Please let me know which game you would prefer and why. I'll choose out 4-6 people for each game and set up a discussion thread by next Wednesday April 20th. Then we can build characters for a week or so and begin campaign play around Friday April 29th.

If you haven't already posted in the thread indicating you want to play that's ok! Do it now! I won't pick groups until next Wednesday so you have like 10 days.

I would like to play Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh. I am really looking forward to it!

I think I'd prefer SSS since it's a shorter term module. This would be my first PbP game and I'd want to be able to fully commit to it.
Plus a quick google reveals that it sounds awesome! Strong elements of exploration, team problem-solving, and piecing together clues are exactly what I'm looking for in a game.
