(allowed) character creation?

Advice

I need to know what I can and can't do when making a character.
Example: when I play fallout new Vegas I used what I called an "engineer" build I only used energy weapons had high: science,Repair, and energy weapons skills and any park that booted my perception and Crit.

I want something similar for pathfinder. some kind of smart teck guy.
with like tesla/laser gun's. and robots (if there can be robots)

Thanks for your help.

Robots, no. Not until really high levels and a liberal GM and Craft Construct (or 3rd party material like Machinesmith).

Lasers, yes. Techslinger Gunslinger is good for that.

You'll probably want to check out the Technology Guide, that has most of the available player options for high-tech stuff

No robots is fine. its the Tech I want.

I will look up the Technology Guide and Techslinger. Thanks.

You'll need a liberal DM or play in a specific kind of game to be allowed to use the Technology Guide. That's the only barrier between you and your dream.

Thanks. but I don't have the money for the Guide any way so...

This is really something you should be asking your Game Master about.

Nothing we tell you will matter.

Don't have a GM. never played at this time.

Sczarni

When you find a GM, then ask them?

Because it really is up to them. If you ever want to actually play your characters, that is.

If you're just theorycrafting, then everything is available.

So it's all up to the GM

Sczarni

Are you familiar with how tabletop RPGs work?

No. not at all.

If you are the player, then you're playing in someone else's game world.

There could be magic, there could be technology, there could be humans, and there could be [insert anything here].

So while anything is possible with Pathfinder, not all GMs are open to everything. They usually have a vision of what works in their world, and what doesn't.

I will be getting the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Beginner Box soon.
IS there a way to buy all the guide book?

OK. thank. that's good to know.

Sczarni

There is currently an Adventure Path available that is very tech-themed. It's called Iron Gods. Ask around your local gaming area to see if anyone will be running it soon.

You can also try playing online via Play by Post.

OK. thanks.

Pathfinder's more of a medieval fantasy game. There's rules for high-tech equipment, but many GMs and players prefer a more "sword and sorcery" theme
It's always best to discuss what sort of game the other players want ahead of time, especially with less common options like tech-based classes
(Especially since the GM decides what treasure you get, there's not much point in specialising in laser guns if there aren't any to find)

For what it's worth d20pfsrd.com is a free resource that has most of the content on its website for free. They aren't allowed to use Paizo's intellectual property, so proper nouns will often be changed to something generic.

Outside of that it's a good resource for someone without much money to spend.

As above though, Pathfinder is mostly a swords and sorcery medieval combat style game.

While there are actually rules for lazer guns and robots, you pretty much have to be in a specific campaign (Iron Gods) to have guaranteed acess to such. For most campaigns, the assumption would be that it's not available.

Thank guys. I will look into to it all.

The rules info from the Technology Guide is available for free on the PRD, which is an official online rules compilation. You can get there with a link from this page - look to the left beneath the Search box, under Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Rules Archive (PRD). The Technology Guide is 4th from the bottom.

Good luck finding a group!

Skip the beginner box. What you want it for is way beyond that. What you need are the Core Rulebook, Advanced Players Guide, and the Technology Guide. Optional addons would be the Numeria sourcebook.

But what you really need is a DM who's running a campaign that includes tech AND the appropriate campaign background. It's not a default assumption for a Pathfinder campaign.

I 2d Claxon's note about the http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ as well as the PF PRD http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/

Lastly, I downloaded the free PF Core Rule Book and Bestiary from the Paizo site here (although its w/o the art - which is all really good IMO). Printed out some key areas to being play and then ordered the hard copies soon after. Its a pretty confident (and successful marketing strategy).

I also use the free apps
Pathfinder Masterwork Tools (Google app store)-full reference document
Pathfinder RPG (Google App) - spells/beasts/magic/feats easier to sort than the MWK Tools version IMO.

Also 2d what Drahliana says about finding a game, it can be a lot easier to learn to play with someone who's already got the rules down. PF can be "a little rules intensive" if you've never played an RPG. That being said, if you've got a good imagination and desire to learn its not impossible to start up a game with friends who've also never gamed - it just might not be the most friendly system for a first time GM and group.

My 12 year old had never gamed before and he started running his own campaign after about 5 sessions of playing in mine. I play in his and help him keep the rules straight, but our whole family was new to PF and have picked it up easily enough. But I won't lie...a 500+ page core rule book was a little intimidating.

So the beginner box is not worth it? I never played.

And I thanks for pointing out the PRD.

When I started running a Pathfinder game I kept my laptop open to the rules forum and a couple tabs to the PRD. Anytime I needed to quick reference it was 10x faster than flipping pages.

I still keep the forum up on game night, just incase something weird comes up and I want to see if there's insight online before I make a houserule call.

I would just go Core Rule Book and Bestiary and skip the beginner box.

I bought it for my nephew for Christmas. Its good, and you get a bunch of cardboard monster pawns + 4 pregenerated characters and a battlemat. some nice swag. However, IMO it is so close to teaching you the full game (but not the full rule set for all the core classes) that its not worth getting as its not really a "beginner level" IMO - not like the old D&D basic set was.

Just jump in with the CRB, Bestiary, and I recommend an order of the Bestiary pawns. I made my own battle grid on a white-board, we set that on the table and draw rooms/terrain in wet erase marker.

OK thank. saves money. I have the Free PDF's from this site on my tablet that I found today when looking around this site. it has the Bestiary 1,2,3, and 4. And a Friend bought me the Bestiary 5 PDF. I also have some app's for my character stat's. ans some other app's have not looked at them all at this time.

I thank you all for the help. tabletop RPGs is something I have never I have been into till now.

my Friend bought me the Bestiary 4 not 5*

We use our Beginner boxes to teach people who are starting out as completely new to roleplaying games. And they are invaluable for that purpose.

But you're already starting out with concepts far more advancecd than what the Box is meant for. You're not looking to teach anyone, you want someone that will accommodate your rather unusual character which is not a beginning character.

Most people play Pathfinder with less technology and more magic.

A tech/engineer/inventor guy seems like you need a lot of skills, and I'm thinking you'd benefit from some magic, too.

My first thought is you should be an Inquisitor: 6 Skill Points/level is high. You get Spells, and so can take Feats like Forge Ring. And you can take a domain like Artifice, letting you be more crafty.

Alchemist might be a good choice. Technically not spellcasters, they can't take any of the Magic Item Crafting Feats in the normal way except for Brew Potion, of course. But they can take Master Craftsman like anyone else, which serves as a prerequisite for both Craft Arms and Armor and Craft Wondrous Item, giving you a broad portfolio for building cool stuff.

Bard also has some options you should look at.

There are 1 or 2 3rd Party options.

Goblins, Gnomes, and Humans are the obvious choice for races, but certainly not your only choices.

There are some magic items you'll be wanting: All Tools Vest, Travellers' Anytool, Crafter's Cauldron, certain Ioun Stones, Marvelous Pigments, and of course, the Lyre of Building.

I will just Work on another build. I never played so will start with something less exotic.

Like when i played Skyrim I was an orc Stealth build. and when I did get seen I used the rage mode.

Is there a rage/Berserker Feat? Grudge Fighter Will work Yes?

And when it comes to miniatures will it need to be a Pathfinder miniatures? are can I buy any? Like this... https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/orc/latest/03278

And when/If i do make the Tech build I will use a Goblin.

Sounds like you want to play a Barbarian. Just put ranks in Stealth and play more cautious until you get caught.

OK. Thanks. I just need to go find some videos on character building.

I never used Pathfinder minis. I usually play a purple Munchkin. For some reason, PFSGMs don't let me use the cheat rules printed on the package...

If we are playing PFS, no. If we are playing Munchkin, the Board Game? Go for it!

You might want to check out the Pathfinder Society pages on this site, as finding a game near you might let you get your feet wet with a more Sword & Sorcery type character, and many PFS GMs are used to helping out new players, as are many of the experienced players. Of course, some of them have ... issues .. with being diplomatic and tactful, but, hey...

The +6 Bag of Munchkins specifies rules--special advantages--for their use in games that aren't Munchkin, but I was joking.

Sorry, I bought my bag of those some time back, as extras for my board game, but haven't looked at the attachment for it in quite some time. ;)

And the bookmarks, etc., etc., etc.
