Rise of the Runelords - Dungeon World Style

Hey Belethlich; just a thought, but thanks to a slightly strange direction that I'm leaning in for this character I (if it's approved) might pick up some healing at level 2? That combined with Dungeon World's less-needed healing probably means that if you were more keen on it, you could still play the Wrath if you wanted. Just a thought.

Cotton Tree wrote:
Has it been decided if we're one table or two yet?

It'll be two. Even though it will probably leave one party slightly less balanced and a man short from the other, managing a single game of 7 is a bit more than I'm comfortable with. Especially since there's a bit of class overlap - I wouldn't want to lose any great character spotlight moments.

I'm still trying to work out who will be going where, such that each group is balanced appropriately and the characters are not at complete odds with each other. I'm probably splitting up the Cleric and Shaman because of healing, but I'm not sure beyond that.

Character - Race & Class - Alignment
Anduil Ebribor - Elf Dashing Hero - Good
James Pollick - Human Fighter - Good
Maelivrin - Human Cleric - Evil
Mooshy's Mage
Onrik Ironoath - Dwarf Templar - Lawful
Swan the Shaman - Dwarf Shaman - Good
Trapdodger Barefoot - Halfling Druid - Neutral

I'm hoping that come the morning I'll have the groups figured out. I'm still working on questions in the meanwhile, so fingers crossed sometime tomorrow we should have both questions and separate Discussion threads for everyone.

A couple of things I noticed while looking over character sheets:

Trapdodger Barefoot:
I don't see you having chosen an option for Born for the Soil. It will also save me some time if you have ~3 animals figured out that you'd like to shapeshift into. That'll give us the ability to work out a few moves ahead of time without having to slow the game down the first time you shapeshift. (Likewise your gear looks unfinished)

Onrik Ironoath:
For stats, 12 is actually a +0. Also, having your god be Iomedae is totally fine, but I'll still ask you questions because despite this being based on Pathfinder, we're not tied to Pathfinder, so feel free to make up an entirely new god if you'd prefer!

I'm strangely invested in this character now so I'll probably stick with Cleric. Thanks though! Could also end up being that we're on different tables so no reason to not take healing?

I missed this but I am curious what you have in mind. The Shaman will have a bit of healing, too, I believe. But a second ability is not necessarily a bad thing - especially in a party of 3, as the case may be.

Swan is actually pretty healy-centric already, with a nifty built-in bonus from her background.

The shaman playbook is not nearly as appealing to me as an offensive class, so most of her advanced moves will be support or further healing.

Well, all of this is totally up for discussion, but:

I think Anduil is a devotee of some kind of luck/daring/adventure goddess (in Pathfinder I guess it would be Desna). He's not just adventuring because it's in his nature (though it is) - he's adventuring because it's sacred. It's a form of worship.

I'd like to take that even further and say his eventual goal is to become the goddess' lover. I really like that kind of epic fairytale quest. Obviously I don't anticipate that happening any time soon, but it'll inform his character pretty significantly.

With that in mind, I think it would be fun to take 'worldly' or 'multiclass dabbler' at level 2 and use it to pick up either 'divine ward' from the priest class, or 'divine favour' from the paladin class.

Ideally I'd take multiclass dabbler and divine ward, representing a growing closeness with the goddess.

Ok Yoricks I wasn't sure if the pantheon would be tied completely to Golarion canon. Ill have something ready when the questions come. Will update my sheet as well.

Spoiler:
I was trying to match my animal ideas with an environment. I am thinking the islands and pull my three or so forms from something similar to the Galapagos islands. Things like hummingbird, chameleon, monkey......maybe a canine or feline critter of some sort...

@sixstrangelimbs: That is a very cool, and very different idea. I love it.
@Onrik: Sounds good!
@Trapdoor: Okay, awesome!

I have questions and group divisions almost done. I'm just waiting for Mooshy to post his character so I can get his questions posted at the same time, and make sure that I don't have second thoughts about group assignments.

What races are available for the Rise of the Runelords AP, Yoricks? That's about all I need to pin down for character creation for the Mage.

DM Mooshybooshy, "the Foolish" wrote:

So far everyone has gone Elf/Human/Dwarf/Halfling. If you want to go something stranger, I'm open to the premise, but it would depend on what it was specifically.

Would you accept a weird twist on a halfling? Someone from a primitive tribe of bronze-age era throwbacks that aren't like other halflings around the world culturally? No mechanical differences from other halflings, but not your typical good-natured hobbit clone either.

Absolutely!

Brilliant, this is him then.

Jin, he calls himself. The little halfling wears a mask of white paint at all times, and carries with him three little masks that he can take out and put on at will. The first mask has a wide-open smile of ecstatic joy. The second mask reflects heartbreaking sorrow. The third mask depicts an apocalyptic rage. In combat, Jin will be switching masks out rapidly as the circumstances change.

In truth, the halfling feels most comfortable when his true face is hidden away. In his culture, to show one's true face is reserved only for lovers and immediate family members. Being small and weak, the tribe of halflings he came from - in the far-off jungles of distant lands - rely on secrecy, stealth, trickery, and poison to survive. The natural magic talents that Jin manifested earned him great mistrust, but also great power, within his tribe. Eventually, his magical talents - manifesting at unheard-of levels of strength for a halfling - scared his community enough that they ostracized him, forbidding him from ever returning. Hurt and angry, Jin gathered up his homemade masks and set off into the world, resolving never to allow himself to be hurt by those close to him again. The mask is an appropriate symbol for this journey.

Spoiler:
got four animals picked out. The token of my land is a pair of distinctive pipes, that go with the halfling pipeweed. Seemed like a good fit to me. I have selected some additional gear and other than bonds I think I have everything

@Trapdodger Barefoot - Sounds great all around!

@Jin/Mooshy - I think you're going with a different mage than I originally thought, (I thought you meant Jacob Randolph's alternate, but this sounds more like the Mask Mage?) but that's totally fine! The character sounds awesome. I do still need the crunch for him, though.

@Everyone - I have groups sorted out. I'll have the new discussion threads and questions up in the morning. Choosing who should go where was oddly difficult. Apologies on the delay, tonight was my in-person Dungeon World game, so my brain was full of an entirely different universe for several hours.

Okay! First run of questions is up for everyone except Jin. Head on over and start checking them out!

Group 1:
Andull Ebribor
James Pollick
Jin'roku the Curser
Maelivrin

Group 2:

Hey, I just saw this post on the DW subreddit. I'm interested in playing!

Oh cool! You are just in time. I do have one spot open in the second group - You'll be with a Templar, Shaman, and Druid. So pick a class, let me know what it is. Third party ones are on the table but I still want to approve it because some of them are not great. And then we'll get you set up with an alias and in the group for some world building questions and playing!

Sweet. I went ahead and looked through the list, and I agree that not all of them are great, but interesting nonetheless.

I think this group has the magic side of things covered, so I was thinking of being the Peerless Fighter. What do you think of this class?

Peerless Fighter is definitely a good choice. Make yourself an alias with the crunch and join the Group 2 discussion thread and I'll get some world-building questions together!

Brunhilda joins the fight! I decided to go with being a dwarf too, I like the idea of a literally small adventuring party

Table 2 is still going strong but it looks like I've lost two people from Table 1

if anyone else is interested in joining up, there's a reasonably evil Cleric and a reasonably tricksy Mage. Let me know here what kind of class you'd like to do, and what your character would be like.

Gameplay is here if you want to see how it has been going. And of course let me know of any questions!

ponder ponder ponder

I'd opt as a chaotic and rambunctious Barbarian for the position!

I saw your reddit post and would be happy to join if there is still room.

I'd potentially be interested. (Saw the Reddit post). This would be my first DW game - I'm initially thinking about a rogue or ranger. Do you still have room?

Given the influx of new interest, I'll withdraw from consideration since I'm in Game 2.

If that happens to go under, however, I'd like the chance to (re)apply here at Game 1 if possible.

 Thanks Swan. :)

Since there's a decent amount of interest (3 posts here, another ~5 on the Reddit - which is great!) I'm going to have to do some kind of selection process.

I don't want to make anyone write too much of a background or do too much world-building stuff, so basically here's how this will work.

  • Post which Dungeon World class you're interested in (3rd party are welcome but I reserve the right to veto them if I don't think they're well-balanced or fitting)
  • Let me know what race and alignment you have in mind. The group right now is a manipulative Evil Human Cleric (think Cultist), and a mischievous Neutral Halfling Mage. This need not affect your choices (especially alignment) but may matter. Being a Dwarf is also slightly different. Elves exist and are fairly Tolkien inspired, but that is something that can potentially be changed, especially for different societies.
  • Let me know why you're in Sandpoint. It's a fairly small coastal town, there is a celebration going on for Desna, the god of Adventurers. You could be an adventurer, a local, someone trading passing through, anything, really.
  • Give me some idea of how you'd play the character. Less background and world stuff (though that's fine, too!) and more personality, maybe a sample post, something like that.

I'll keep this open for perhaps a week, depending on how quickly responses come in (though I won't just close it. If there's a ton on Sunday/Monday I might move the date up to Wednesday). Then the other two players and I will look through applications and choose two to join up.

And obviously feel free to ask any questions!

Same as Swan - I'd rather let you get completely new peeps.

Proposed Character:

Cerdick Drokkus
Improved Bard - Chaotic Human

Sandpoint has been my home for most of my adult life. Yes, when I was young I was a foolish follower of Desna, out in the wilds, seeking out adventure. But I wisened up and settled down, content with performing for the people of Sandpoint. Sure, at one point I played for queens and countesses, but that was many years (and many pounds) ago.

I'm currently GMing one DW PbP and I'm playing in two of Jin's games (currently as Lyntel and Hegh). I can post pretty often, but generally don't write particularly long posts. My best RP post was probably when my first character died in Moosh's game, and I rejected death's offer. That is this post.

Not sure how I'd play Cerdick yet, my characters tend to evolve with a mind of their own.

EDIT: I should mention that if Cerdick is more than a one off mention NPC and is integral to the plot then I would choose a different character. I'm thinking of The Downtrodden as either Paladin, Templar, or Crusader.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Class I'm interested in is The Survivor

So, Inverse world does alignment in an odd manner, so I'll just translate as best I can. My alignment is Neutral (Obtain something or someplace that is yours and only yours), and I want to play a Human whose cataclysm (the Survivors equivalent of a race move) was the result of a god (Lamashtu, or Rovagug would be my first my choices) (should I expand on this? I have ideas, but i don't want to dump a whole life story on you guys)

I think I live here, and have for a couple years. It's a nice, peaceful town, with a beautiful view of the sea. I probably came here after the...incident, just trying to escape the memories, and pity. I've found work as a guard (is that okay?), which pays for a little one-room hut with a nice view of the sea.

And here's a sample post, about what I was doing that morning (This is a bit more detailed than I will likely post for singular actions, but I thought I should give you a feel for the character.)\

It is a good morning to read Sigmund thought, turning the page of the holy book Abstalar had loaned him. An annotated copy of Desna's apocrypha, perhaps a dry title, but it read like the stories his grandfather used to tell him, of adventures and heroes.

He placed the book in the pouch on his belt, intending to return it at the festival later. He made his way to the center of town as the festival was beginning. Sheriff Hemlock had asked that he be "On reserve" for the festival, which meant "Be there, Bring your sword, and don't get drunk".

So Sigmund spent most of the festival delighting children with stories of his father, and grandfathers heroics "And then the dragon reared up its head, up taller than the highest trees, and was about to swallow him whole, when he charged forward, shield up to stop the fire from the beast nostrils. And he smote him!". He was also successful in getting a dance from an attractive young woman, here from magnimar for the festival. It had gone well, he thought, and she stayed and spoke with him for some time, before the ceremony.

Sigmund sat silent as Father Zantus gave his speech, occasionally stealing glances back at the girl (whose name he now knew to be abigail). it was during one of these stolen glances that his scar burned. the sudden pain made him close his eye reflexively. She saw, and he hoped it came off as dashing or flirtatios, and not strange or overly forward. Then the sreaming started.

Probably worth noting, because one came up, and another might be an issue, that for my Eternal Marks I selected A Scar Burning, A Body Scarred, and either A Limb Replaced if a magical golem-arm thing isn't too steampunk for the setting (or if there's an alternative i haven't thought of) or if it is A Hand Bloodied

I am not sure what you mean. The intention is that you would play this character and he'd be one of the heroes, not an NPC that doesn't get mentioned much. You'd be "integral" in the sense that the game occurs around what the players do.

I believe, though I may be mistaken, that Cerdick Drokkus is the town's theater professional, an already established NPC, and if him taking over that NPC, and elevating him to PChood, would mess up the plot (he is secretly the runelord, or whatever) then he is willing to play a different character.

Oh christ, I didn't even catch the name. Thanks, Elsine. Yeah that would be fine, MCKhaos.

So, I'm interested in playing a neutral-ish human rogue. I'm still looking over some of the options in your link, but right now I'm leaning toward the burglar (I like the emphasis on stealth as opposed to poisons in the core Thief).

I'm Marcan, a retired thief, formerly a high-ranking member of the thieves' guild in the nearest large city. I retired a few years back, leaving the city and settling down in Sandpoint for a quieter life; I've since married a local woman. I'm not as young as I used to be, starting to go grey a bit. I was enjoying a quiet life, occasionally working a little behind-the-scenes to keep the nastier bits of the underworld out of Sandpoint, up until everything went to Abaddon at that one Swallowtail Festival...

It's been a very long time since I've participated in a PbP game; I should be able to manage one solid post a day pretty consistently, more than that would be tricky.

Personality-wise, I'm picturing a mix of "I'm getting too old for this" with "I won't let anybody mess with my adopted hometown" - until now, the latter has mostly meant quietly interfering with any of the nastier bits of underworld society that tried to move in; some petty theft or smuggling is fine, but anyone too aggressive I'd quietly act to thwart.

As far as relating to the existing PCs, I doubt I'd know either of them all that well - if I've dealt with Mae for any length of time over the last two days, I'd expect to have a bond along the lines of "Mae's running some sort of con here; I need to find out what it is", but otherwise I'd expect bonds to wait until stuff comes up during play.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I'm looking forward to (hopefully) joining the group!

These sound great so far! One of my players is away on vacation for this week and we have PAX next weekend so this recruitment is going to be open a bit longer than I had expected.

Yeah, I'm planning to have them come up organically, so it's totally fine to not know anyone. Jin and Mae haven't even met yet!

With that in mind, you might also like the City Thief. It also has some Stealth focus instead of poisons, and also has a couple of moves related to connections / a Thieves Guild, which might work well.

The Burglar would be a totally fine class to play, too, of course! I just wasn't sure if you'd seen the other. There are an awful lot of custom classes.

I just wanted to check in about my Marks, if I get in. I know that this is a pretty strictly fantasy, and the mark A Limb Replaced feels kinda steampunk/magitech, and I am fine with taking A Hand Bloodied, or maybe having a human disaster source instead, but I kinda like the idea of a golem-hand, and it gives me a reason to dump dexterity. Would you care to weigh in?

Ooh, that does look a little nicer. Thanks for calling it out, and I'm now officially going with that over Burglar.

I'm still a bit up in the air about it, because yeah it does feel a bit steampunk / magitech and the game is otherwise not really big on those aspects.

It might be suitably horrific to have your limb replaced by another creatures because of mad science (TM). (Or even "it healed wrong"). You could also do a thing with it having been healed after being ruined, but losing some of the subtleties that it can ordinarily do. Such that something like holding a weapon is fine, but maybe you have a harder time moving your fingers independently.

Just a couple things that came to mind, but I'm sure we can find some way that's thematic and gives some good roleplay.

"Cerdick" was a truly inspired name Yoricks. Elsine hit the nail on the head. I just didn't want to steal one of your mission-critical NPCs. I did the same thing in one of Moosh's games, taking over a one-off mention NPC (and subsequently getting him killed in fine fashion).

Hi there friends, I have a character I'd like to submit. I've played PBP RPGs for a good 10 years, but took a hiatus. Now that I'm GMing a Dungeon World game amongst my IRL friends I'd love to try the system from a PC's perspective. As such, I'm happy to submit...

Bolgrond
Bugbear Fighter - Good alignment

I'm planning to play him as a boisterous, protective, 'quick to laugh' character, who unleashes Bugbear savagery to protect innocents and his friends. Bolgrond is coming to terms with who he is in this world, having forsaken Goblinkind for the ways and Gods of man.

Sample post:

Three days since the last raid on Sandpoint. It was a successful haul; six human children and foodstuffs to last a month. The squealing and crying of children in their new cages used to give him such peace - but now he hears only their pain, and he can't stand it. What twisted man-magic did this to him?

The adventurers who came to rescue them were crushed easily enough, except for the shiny one - what do they call them? Paladin? The Paladin slew two of his brothers with the sword, and the blast of hot light from his hand blinded Bolgrond before he succumbed to his wounds. But while Bolgrond's eyes regained sight, he felt his mind clear too. Cleaner, sharper, and more aware.

He thinks differently now, too. The sight of children in cages, of broken men, of tortured screams - he can barely stand it.

Bolgrond was always the decisive one, and tonight he decides to do things differently. He sets aside his morningstar and picks up the dead Paladin's runeblade - how did the human wield it? It was nearly as thick as a man's body, and just as long; a perfect sword for a Bugbear. In his hands it glows a scarlet red for a moment, before dimming - does it... accept him?

The children look at him in fear, and then confusion as he opens their cages and raises a finger to his lips. Shhhhhh

"Don't worry manlings, the sword isn't for you." The blade had already claimed two of his brothers - and while silently ushering the children out of the warren, past the spike pit and worg den - Bolgrond wonders how many more it will cleave before the night is up.

Sounds like a very interesting character, Bolgrond!

I'll leave this open for submissions until Monday in case anyone else is interested, and then we'll close it down and have a decision within a day or two.

Recruitment is now closed. I should have the selected characters posted tomorrow. Best of luck, everyone. :)

Man, even with phoning this out to the two other players, this was still a hard choice to make. Thanks to everyone who submitted.

Sbodd and Bolgrond - you'll be joining us! Please pop over to the threads, especially Discussion. We can work on your introductions while you get your aliases together with your character sheet information.
