As the old DM - a Birdman is a perfect fit, especially given the setting. I was really hoping someone would be a weird animal person!

Please read the first post in this recruitment thread for the campaign 'pitch' :)

I'll be watching as you guys play. Makes me happy to see new life in this.

AFAICT, in DW the DM interprets all your rolls, providing the story based on the results of those rolls. But, considering my newness to DW, I would like to suggest the following change : *you* narrate the results of your own rolls!

On a 10+, you describe how you achieved your success, and include any weapon tag results from a Hack&Slash or spell.

On a 7-9, you come up with your partial success (or added complication), if it isn't already described by your Move.

On a 6-, you describe how you fail.

When it's my turn to narrate, I would add a soft move on a 7-9, and a hard move on a 6-.

What do you all think of this approach? Please be honest (but gentle...).

BTW, we've got a new player playing a Barbarian, he should be ready in a day or two.

Even I'm going to weigh in here.

The GM doesn't interpret all your rolls. The moves that people make have specific outcomes for success or partial success and allow you to suit those to the fiction. Sometimes even failure has specific outcomes in the move too. In addition, on a fail you get to make a GM move. It's hard or soft depending on how generous you are. DON'T give that up to the players, because you'll need it to balance the game.

You've gotta go with your GM instincts on these. But whether you make hard or soft moves in DW is at your discretion.

Look to the book as guidance

You make a move:

*When everyone looks to you to find out what happens
*When the players give you a golden opportunity
*When they roll a 6-

Generally when the players are just looking at you to find out what happens you make a soft move, otherwise you make a hard move.

...

When you have a chance to make a hard move you can opt for a soft one instead if it better fits the situation. Sometimes things just work out for the best.

Ok, so Lichkicker, if you'd PM me all of your scenario's notes, I'd really appreciate it.

Laguna, any ideas?

I'll do so when I get in to work tomorrow. About 18hrs from this post.

I'll be lurking every now and then to keep tabs

To assist, I'll also let you know what I had planned for the next few scenes. That should be enough to get you up and running.

Thanks for being awesome humans everyone.

I am happy to pass the reins to Sarthel if you all are. The real fun of RP is in the actual doing of it, not the resolution of it. (journey>destination etc)

Sarthel, I've written some notes to support the campaign and nailed down the fronts I've done (albeit in a modified style). I hope that these serve as inspiration and direction in terms of where we would have gone together.

I would encourage you to seek a new player or two, and not to retcon Sarthel herself out at all. We love the unique character you developed.

If you have any concerns over GMing Dungeon World, I know Laguna is currently running a very active campaign, and I frequent the Dungeon World subreddit.

If you tell me you're down for this adventure and ready for the fun, I'll send you the notes via PM :)

First of all my thanks for your continued patience with this.

Secondly, my apologies for such a slow campaign.

Thirdly, I am alive, and not invested as a GM in anything else at the moment.

But finally, the first quarter of 2017 has seen me lose two grandmothers and a beloved family pet, and helping my family through all of this. In addition, my real life responsibilities have been escalating due to increasingly frequent weddings, new babies, and the personal crises of many of my friends.

These are what has been taking preference over GMing and RPing. Although I am sorry that I haven't been able to run this game like I dreamed, I believe my priorities are in order.

So I see three options from here.

  • We continue at the pace we have been, which I think is the worst option for you guys!
  • Someone steps up to GM, and I can send them all the prep I've done. This might be the best option.
  • We call it quits. But I won't leave you without satisfaction. I did something very successfully in my RL game, which was a 'relay finale'. I'll provide a defy danger for each of you, one by one, and we use that to propel the narrative forward towards a final conclusion. Your result will be a sweeping and epic way that you resolve what would've otherwise have been months of slow gameplay. This might be the most fun option.

From there, you each answer a final round of questions which you would tell me what your character went on to do.

As a final gift, I'll 'give up the ghost' on what was planned for the campaign and endeavour to ask any questions.

Thanks again for all your patience and understanding. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • Ok, fifth slot is going to ZenFox42.

Please head over to the discussion thread linked earlier. I'll have some introductory questions for you there shortly.

Hi d'Eon, thanks for your application.

Having a look through, to be honest I'm not a fan of this playbook - in large part due to the Assistant thing.

I would ask that you consider a more 'adventurer' style playbook. If it makes sense, we can multiclass you into the Landed Gentry compendium class.

And if you really want the feel of having an associated character, I would rather use a Hireling for that.

Sure, I've had a look through it and it doesn't appear harmful.

I'll give hippos until end of the weekend to respond.

    ZenFox42 wrote:

Do you allow "supplemental" classes? If so, how about a Dwarven Psion?

Do you have a link to the playbook? It would just depend on how the class is written frankly.

The Fifth spot, previously occupied by PrinceArtemis' Lewyn the Bard has now opened up again.

Hippos, Zenfox, I'd love to hear your applications.

    Hi friends, tough call.

I was thinking of running two tables, but a few people dropped out.

So I'll be going ahead with

  • Laguna
  • Onick
  • Teren
  • Rankev
  • Lewyn

Discussion thread should be up in the next day or so.

I really enjoyed the HalfElf/Elf combo but a dual submission means it's harder to say yes to both of you guys. Good luck, and if we get players drop out through attrition you'll be top of the list.

    Can't wait to get started!

  • Ok. At this stage I think I'm looking at 2 tables.

Still waiting for a few submissions. I'll be making a discussion thread next weekend to start the world building and bonds before we kick off the campaign.

    Waiting for Character submission:
    Sapiens
    The Pale King
    Scranford
    Wanderer

Great to have you all. This is going to be a harder process than I thought!

@sbodd, a shame about that game. I thought we were just getting started too!

Depending on numbers I may open a second table. But I'll make that call when recruitment finishes up.

As a heads up, I hate never levelling up in pbp games. I'm probably going to run the 'end of session' move around once a month.

Hi Zoomzilla, no worries, I was a Paizo forum newbie a few months ago.

    *****Character Creation on the forums*****

Please post your character bio in this thread. You can feel free to make an 'alias' for yourself and post it there as well. Aliases are how we skin our different characters on the forums.

If you hover over my username on the left of my post, it will tell you what other aliases I have. You can create your own for your character under 'My Account' (top right bar at the top of your browser) then the field marked 'Message Board Aliases' and 'Create New Alias'. Unfortunately you can't upload your own profile picture, you have to use one of the native paizo ones.

Name the alias the same as your character. Feel free to peruse mine, which are all Dungeon World characters. Basically this is where you stick your character sheet, including your stats and DW starting moves. No need to put in things like Hack'n'slash, just your character's moves.

Once recruitment is closed, I will link the discussion thread where we will do some world building, I will ask some introduction questions about your character and the world, and we decide bonds.

Then we start, as DW suggests, in the middle of a tense situation (which I've laid out in the opening post), in a gameplay thread.

Feel free to have a look how these threads play out to get a sense for how to RP and style your character's thoughts and actions.
DM Loopy's Dungeon World campaign gameplay

Typically the GM will wait to hear all of the PCs actions before posting the consequences. Personally, If we are waiting for a player or two, I'm going to make a post regardless, since in DW there is no turn order.

    ***** Formatting *****

Underneath the post field, you'll see a box saying 'How to format your text [show]'

When you hit that magic button, you'll see everything you need.

For quick reference, you can perform a roll simply through the following style code:
    [_dice= What the roll is for] 2d6 + 1d8 + 3 [/_dice]

Without the underscores that becomes the following:

    What the roll is for: 2d6 + 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6, 1) + (1) + 3 = 11

If you have any more questions feel free to ask anyone here :)

(btw, 'dotting' means marking a thread with a blank post. You'll notice when you browse the forums that this thread will have a 'dot' after the title because you've posted in it.)

Posting rate of 3-4 times a week would be ideal for me.

@infernalzero, anything you like. Feel free to multiclass into the WIP playbook if you don't feel it's ready. But I am also open to adjusting the class in the fly.

For new players, the system is essentially as follows. If you could reasonably accomplish your action, no roll is needed. You just do it.

If there's a chance you might not be able to do it, we roll. 2d6+STAT, on a 10+ you succeed, on a 7-9 you succeed but with complications, on a 6- you fail, mark XP, and the GM gets to make a move of their own.

Since there's interest from new players, after you've perused the free rules online, this DW guide really helps it all fall into place.

    Dungeon World Beginners Guide

3 people marked this as a favorite.

An idyllic valley, with verdant forests, deep lakes, forgotten groves, and sloping hills hides an ancient village. In the valley of Chromia, mankind lives in harmony with nature and the spirits of the forest.

At least it did, until it was swallowed whole by the earth itself.

Washed up on the banks of a river, you awaken. In the distance you see the familiar hills now sundered in the Catastrophe. A sinkhole yawns in earth where Chromia once stood, and above it, floating in the sky, a crystal the size of a city bathes the landscape in a pink glow.

The world of Evermore will never be the same.

You’d have time to reflect, if not for the screams of a child ahead and the red sashed rebels you see approaching.

    *******************************

Welcome players, to the Chronicles of Chromia, a Dungeon World RPG. I know a lot of you are DW veterans, but If you haven’t played Dungeon World before, it’s simple, engaging, and an absolute riot to play. The rules are available for free online. A quick google search will steer you true.

In classic DW fashion, the world itself will be defined by you, the players. Where we go, what happened to Chromia, and what happens next will be revealed by your actions and input. That is, if you even cared for the damn place at all.

I have 4 -5 open slots for likeminded players to explore and build this world with. The inspiration and direction I’d like you to consider are from classic RPGs like Final Fantasy, The Secret of Mana, and so on.

You don’t need to have any experience in those games to join; in fact, the most important thing will be for you to look at the colour palette of them. That’s my inspiration for this world; one of colour, light, energy, and beauty. Dark deeds, betrayals, world-ending secrets and the like will play out against this rich colour.

I’m not asking you to play some goody-two-shoes animoo character. I’m just tired of bleak and desolate settings. Let’s play in one that’s overflowing.

I’m open to some third party playbooks, but I prefer the core classes (yes, that includes the Druid and the *gasp* Immolator). If there’s something you’ve got a real hankering to play, like a spell-sword, then let’s hash it out together with some tasteful multiclassing rather than just playing the Arcane Duelist class.

I’m easily swayed on new races. I love diverse groups.

Updates will be 3-4 times per week on my part. You know how these things go.

So tell me, your name, race, a short bio if you feel like it, and as a RP prompt, tell me what your character was doing in Chromia on the day before the Catastrophe. Feel free to roleplay it out with each other as well.

I’ll make a decision in about a fortnight.

Here's my submission if there's still room.

    Shyff Sonora, Elf Bard:

    Class: Bard

    Name: Shyff Sonora
Exiled from the High Choir for breaking his vow of silence, Shyff now seeks a greater purpose.

Race: Elf - When you enter an important location (your call) you can ask the GM for one fact from the history of that location.

Look: Knowing eyes, Fancy Hair, Finery, Fit Body

Alignment: Good - Perform your art to aid someone else.

    HP: 19/19
    Armour: 1
    Damage: D6

    Stats:
    Strength 8 (-1)
    Constitution 13 (+1)
    Dexterity 12 (+0)
    Intelligence 15 (+1)
    Wisdom 9 (+0)
    Charisma 16 (+2)

    Moves:

    Arcane Art:
When you weave a performance into a basic spell, choose an ally and an effect:
    *Heal 1d8 damage
    *+1d4 forward to damage
*Their mind is shaken clear of one enchantment
*The next time someone successfully assists the target with aid, they get +2 instead of +1

    Then roll+Cha.
*On a 10+, the ally gets the selected effect.
*On a 7-9, your spell still works, but you draw unwanted attention or your magic reverberates to other targets affecting them as well, GM’s choice.

Bardic Lore (Legends of Heroes Past):
When you first encounter an important creature, location, or item (your call) covered by your bardic lore you can ask the GM any one question about it; the GM will answer truthfully. The GM may then ask you what tale, song, or legend you heard that information in.

    Charming and Open
When you speak frankly with someone, you can ask their player a question from the list below. They must answer it truthfully, then they may ask you a question from the list (which you must answer truthfully).

    *Whom do you serve?
*What do you wish I would do?
*How can I get you to ____?
*What are you really feeling right now?
    *What do you most desire?

    A Port in the Storm:
When you return to a civilized settlement you’ve visited before, tell the GM when you were last here. They’ll tell you how it’s changed since then.

    Gear (Load: 4/8)
    *A songbook in a forgotten tongue (0w)
    *Leather armor (1AC, 1w)
    *Dueling Rapier (close, precise, 2w)
    *Adventuring Gear (1w)

Also Loup, it's worth noting that your Load is +STR not +Strength, ie. the modifier, not the full value

Is recruitment over for this? I'd definitely be interested if not.

Most probably a Bard or Wizard, depending on the party's composition.

    DM Loopy wrote:
Sounds interesting. Go ahead and work on that. You're bound to have made a few enemies with what you're describing, and that gives someone to call hell down upon you later. Muhahahaha.

As a GM of DW myself, I love it when my players give me something to use against them :D

How do you want us to apply? Brief backstory? Sample post?

I'd love to join in - potentially as a druid? I'm thinking someone who uses the secrets of nature and shapeshifting and uses them as a (literal) cat burglar, thief, and general miscreant.

Interested to explore a character torn between civilization and nature, between the selflessness that their druidic heritage demands and the greed of their own heart.

I'm considering. Maybe a vanilla ranger?

Do we know anything about Wrey?

Hi there friends, I have a character I'd like to submit. I've played PBP RPGs for a good 10 years, but took a hiatus. Now that I'm GMing a Dungeon World game amongst my IRL friends I'd love to try the system from a PC's perspective. As such, I'm happy to submit...

    Bolgrond
    Bugbear Fighter - Good alignment

I'm planning to play him as a boisterous, protective, 'quick to laugh' character, who unleashes Bugbear savagery to protect innocents and his friends. Bolgrond is coming to terms with who he is in this world, having forsaken Goblinkind for the ways and Gods of man.

    Sample post:

Three days since the last raid on Sandpoint. It was a successful haul; six human children and foodstuffs to last a month. The squealing and crying of children in their new cages used to give him such peace - but now he hears only their pain, and he can't stand it. What twisted man-magic did this to him?

The adventurers who came to rescue them were crushed easily enough, except for the shiny one - what do they call them? Paladin? The Paladin slew two of his brothers with the sword, and the blast of hot light from his hand blinded Bolgrond before he succumbed to his wounds. But while Bolgrond's eyes regained sight, he felt his mind clear too. Cleaner, sharper, and more aware.

He thinks differently now, too. The sight of children in cages, of broken men, of tortured screams - he can barely stand it.

Bolgrond was always the decisive one, and tonight he decides to do things differently. He sets aside his morningstar and picks up the dead Paladin's runeblade - how did the human wield it? It was nearly as thick as a man's body, and just as long; a perfect sword for a Bugbear. In his hands it glows a scarlet red for a moment, before dimming - does it... accept him?

The children look at him in fear, and then confusion as he opens their cages and raises a finger to his lips. Shhhhhh

"Don't worry manlings, the sword isn't for you." The blade had already claimed two of his brothers - and while silently ushering the children out of the warren, past the spike pit and worg den - Bolgrond wonders how many more it will cleave before the night is up.
