I'm proposing a little competition. The objective is to build a 1st-level PFS-character who can get the highest bonus on (any) one skill check on her first adventure.
To make things easily comparable, one ability stat (your choice) can start at 14 and all others are 13 (before applying racial mods). Be sure to list what type of mod each one is.
If you'd like to play, please also include the following:
- Feat(s) -
- Trait(s) -
- Racial bonuses -
- Class bonuses -
- Equipment bonus -
- Any conditional particulars -

I'm not sure how you're getting to +30, but I can get up to +23. I mean, it's to swim, so I'm not sure how useful it is, but it's a thing.
Undine Tactician Fighter
Feats - Athletic, Skill Focus (swim) (fighter bonus feat)
Trait - Strong Swimmer
Masterwork Tools - swimming fins
Total
+2 (Str)
+8 (Swim speed)
+3 (Skill Focus)
+2 (Athletic)
+1 (Rank)
+3 (Class Skill)
+2 (Trait)
+2 (Masterwork Tools)
Total = +23

Oh, if we're going for potions and other stuff like that then I can get higher - I was going for "always on"
This is for an acrobatics check to jump.
Character is a Human Barbarian with the Acrobatic and Skill Focus (acrobatics) feats, who drinks a potion of expeditious retreat and a potion of jump as well as using spring-loaded boots (masterwork tool).
+2 Dex
+3 Class Skill
+1 Rank
+2 Trait Soaring Sprinter
+3 Skill Focus
+2 Acrobatic
+4 Barb Fast Movement - (Every +10 ft. of movement = +4 to jump checks)
+12 Potion of Expeditious Retreat
+10 Potion of Jump
+2 Masterwork Tools

Perhaps you should set a budget? Say 1200 gp, 2 PP, 5 fame?
Also, there should be 2 categories.
One off.
Repeatable.
Good ideas. As previously listed, the skill check is assumed to be used on your first adventure. Therefore, you are restricted to the usual PFS starting cash, no pp or fame.
List both your "Base" (i.e. Repeatable) and "Max" (i.e. w/ specific conditions and expendables)" totals.

I think a better contest would be non-hypothetical characters. The bonuses are nowhere near as high as above, but here's one I actually played at level 1:
Julian Lightfoot, halfling infiltrator inquisitor of Norgorber
+3 intelligence (Student of Philosophy trait to use intelligence instead of charisma for most bluff and diplomacy checks)
+3 wisdom (Infiltrator Inquisitor archetype adds wisdom to bluff and diplomacy checks)
+2 racial bonus (Shiftless – Halfling alternate racial trait)
+1 skill rank
+3 class skill
+2 circumstance bonus (masterwork tool – fancy silver holy symbol of Pharasma that gives +2 on bluff checks to pretend to worship Pharasma)
For a total of +14 bluff to pretend to be a priest of Pharasma in my first adventure. Obviously, I could have taken Skill Focus to get that higher very easily, and/or boosted my int or wis higher. But like I said, this is an actual build. Bluff is VERY important to the build (he really worships an evil god whose worship is banned in most Inner Sea nations), but I did have to invest in other things, too.

In a way it "kind of" is – I only came across this idea as I was planning a build for a new character. The only difference will be that when I do the reveal for this contest, it will be with a lower ability stat than what I will be playing the character with (and I'll hold off on the consumables).
I went with the hypothetical approach in this thread so that I and others could learn the limits of what is possible in PFS.
But, don't let that stop anyone from also posting their "actually played" examples. Even though you may not win the grand prize, you just might get the constellation prize (which, coincidentally, is the same as the grand prize).

Okay here's my attempt off the top of my head.
Azata Eidolon (Small) using Stealth.
Rank: 1
Class Skill: 3
Skill Focus: 3
Size: 4
Skilled Evolution: 8
Masterwork gear (Sneakers?): 2
Dex: 4
Total: 25
All with a climb speed too.
Bonus cheese, Potion/Wand of Vanish for 65 total stealth while stationary or 45 while moving.

If we're going to play the circumstance bonus game...
Walk halfway around golarion from you. 12,000 miles= 63360000 feet= +6,336,000 to stealth checks.
For the win! Although you would probably auto succeed due to the curvature of the planet (no LOS) unless you believe that planets are flat ;-)

You are right. You should travel to Aucturn. That way you have clean line of sight. I wasn't able to find orbital distances, but it almost has to be many orders of magnitude more.
Okay, lets not count circumstance bonuses.

Taking a shot at a useful skill : Perception
1/2 elf wizard
1 rank : +1
keen senses +2 racial
skill focus (bonus feat) +3
class skill +3
sharp senses feat exchanges the +2 racial with a +4 racial
hawk familiar +3
heightened awareness +2 competence
14 wisdom +2
Eyes and Ears of the City +1 trait bonus
Total +19
Captain Temπ Ænaut Fugit |
Well, I'm going to call it for BigNorseWolf. Its clear that stealth can easily become ridiculous with its "distance from observer" variable in play.
And aside from stealth, I am still interested in hearing how each and every skill can individually explode with bonuses. To that end, please keep 'em coming.
(I just noticed I put "constellation prize" instead of "consolation prize." How Ironic.)

Disguise (optimized for disguised, though this is not far off one of my characters)
Kitsune (any class)
+1 Rank
+3 Class Skill (Among Human guarantees this)
+5 CHA
+10 Realistic Likeness feat (as one specific Individual) (Circumstance)
+2 Trait bonus (Among Human)
+10 Racial (to appear human)
+2 Racial from Duplicitious (Alternate Racial Trait)
+2 MW Disguise Kit (+2 Circumstance - 50gp)
+2 MW Tool (to disguise yourself in 1 specific form - 50gp)
+37 to disguise as one specific human
(and yes circumstance and racial bonuses stack)
(you could stack another +1 competence on with Keeper of the Veil, but since it's Qadiran and competence bonuses are easy to pick up later I left it off, also there's a good chance there's an archetype or vigilante (soon to come out) thing that could add on)

Don't forget raiment of command for an hour per level untyped bonus to Diplomacy and Intimidate, and a +10 competence bonus to the Disguise check and any Bluff check related to impersonating a specific authority figure whom you have met in person.

Yes but even a scroll would be beyond your starting GP means (at least if you wanted anything else)

The build constraints of the 'contest' also prohibit a 20 stat. "one ability stat (your choice) can start at 14 and all others are 13 (before applying racial mods)." So the highest stat you could have would be 16.
You make a valid point. Totally forgot that part, I originally started writing up my character who has a 12 CHA and forgot that he put in a max when I decided to optimize it a bit more.

Lack of LOS does not auto-succeed on Stealth, otherwise Invisibility would not just confer bonuses. Perception assumes you are using all of your senses.
Of course, at DC 6,336,009 (+6,336,000 bonus, plus Take 10, plus a -1 size penalty as BNW is a BigNorseWolf) you would still need some awesome senses, but I don't like auto-anything in RPGs.
Nefreet |
It's actually unclear, and results in some heated arguments over in the Rules Forum.
Multiple rules, feats, and abilities reference three different modifiers: a Bonus to Stealth, a Penalty to Perception, and an increase in the Perception DC.
The open-minded consensus is that they're all essentially the same thing. The RAW position is that Perception doesn't work as a skill.

This in a party of 7 Halfling Summoners with the Helpful Racial trait.

Additional +12 for 6 +2 Aid Anothers from the other eidolons
Total +105 to Stealth.
