We closed on the house this past Monday! It has made for an odd Thanksgiving week. We decided to have a quiet day and ate at home Thursday.
It was a good thing too. When we went to the house after the closing, we discovered the seller had wasted no time in shutting off the electric service. I had to call to have it restored, which it was on Wednesday evening.
Since we were preparing for the coldest Thanksgiving on record, we were worried about the pipes freezing, so I headed to the house Thursday morning (about a 75 minute drive). I got there and realized I had not brought the keys with me. And the furnace was definitely off.
So, back to the old house to get the keys, then back to the new house. It was 37* F inside. I got breakers turned on, powered up the furnace, and checked the pipes. They were okay, but if I had waited until Friday I have no doubt they would have frozen.
After two round trips, I was home at 4:30, and that was my Thanksgiving.
(This is not on social media at the moment. John has not given notice at his job.)

Sorry to hear about your thanksgiving. But on the plus side, the real crisis was averted. Quick thinking :)

I try to avoid the inundation of 'modern' Christmas music and try mostly to stick with things that have been around for a while: actual freaking CAROLS.
Also I could tell people straight away what I think...but I think they'd just think I was kidding.

I’m just happy that
A) I don’t work in retail anymore so I am not inundated with eight decades of cheesy Christmas songs
B) I get some time to spend with family
C) I’m at the point in my life where I am divesting myself of possessions, so Yule is more about the people and happy times.
I for one, am happy for your happiness! :)
A) I dont have to work retail, my Daughter has been trying to listen to Christmas songs in the house since JULY! ;P
B) YES! (Now if the kids only wanted to spend time with the parents!) :P
C) That is wonderful.
Of course I personally am nowhere near that point yet, and love my pack-rat possessions! One day I'll mature. A little. Maybe. :)

I love both traditional carols and a lot of less traditional Christmas music. On my FB page, starting in December, I post a Christmas carol or song every day.

I have been listening to "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of The Ring" your talk of a 'middle age' made me think of the "third age of Middle Earth."
I can't stop thinking that I'm slipping into my "third and final age." "I am starting to feel like not enough butter spread over to much bread." to sorta quote Bilbo.

THEN there are days like Thanksgiving where I eat too much, and it feels like there is WAY too much of me! :PWhat version are you listening to? I have some old cassette tapes of the novels being read by the author. (The trilogy takes up a LOT of cassettes!) I bought them for my dad years ago as presents, and re-inherited them when he died. He always said he preferred the author's reading over anyone else. :)

Referring to the Tolkien audiobooks above, I once worked with a guy who had taken it upon himself to take selections from the Silmarillion and make his own audiobooks. He used Led Zeppelin as the music between chapters. He actually did a fairly decent job with them.

That's actually a good complement.
I mean, dont get me wrong. I LIKE Tolkien, A lot. It was my very-first fantasy series as a kid. Got me hooked on the genre in general. But Tolkien was first and foremost a HISTORIAN, and it shows in his writing. (Lets face it, he is not exactly an action-scene kind of guy. His writing is a little dry.) :)
My point is, anyone who can take and read his writings aloud as an audiobook and do a good job, that's a complement! :)
And yeah, I thought about writing anthropomorphic otters race too before but I have many other races to write down.

I listened to the Glass Cannon Podcast 13 hours on Thanksgiving and 13 hours again yesterday. Not only was it really fun and kept me awake, but it made me very much miss group and tabletop gaming. Now I am sad.

I just assumed, like I do and shouldn't with most people, that you were in a group.
No, haven't played in years. Went to the FLGS on open game night and all of us newcomers were completely and entirely ignored by everyone there. They advertised the event and didn't even have someone around to welcome us and introduce us to the store, the groups, the schedule, etc. So THAT didn't work out well. (I did get a pretty good cup of coffee.)
If I'd have been smart, I'd have gotten all of us standing around like idiots set up at a table and run a one-shot or something. Hindsight.
That sucks. And yeah, throwing together a group of "outsiders" would have been fun and weirdly like creating an adventuring party.
What does GASP stand for?
I asked my FLGS several years ago about PFS support. He said "We tried that. The guy who was supposed to be running it showed up late the first three times and missed the fourth. So we're not doing that any more."

Don't worry Cal. Also I've been to GASP more than once. My major gripe has been a) it's usually pretty far for a guy in Morgantown to go...and b) they can't seem to keep a single location for long term.
But otherwise I've enjoyed it. :)
Also I need to convince the owner of Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming we need to get either the Sears location (that's going out of business) or the Elder Beerman that's definitely out of business and not being used.

Has anyone seen the Chrismas Chronicle on Netflix? Kurt Russel makes great Santa Claus, he makes a point of not being fat and jolly and wears a red leather Santa suit.
another point where Calvin was right, that Tolkien is more a historian, not a dramatist.
I still say it is a good read none the less.

I do plan to watch "The Christmas Chronicle". Maybe this weekend when the GF is in town.
I saw "Christmas Chronicle" listed on the Netflix while perusing, My wife will undoubtedly make me watch it with her. :)

My DVR is still so full of LAST seasons shows that it is deleting them to make room for THIS seasons shows.. :P
Between that, and my ever-expanding Netflix wish-list, And my actual RL schedule, (Both work and fun) I seriously doubt that I will EVER get to watch all of the shows on my lists!

At this point, I would have to binge for 24hours a day, no sleep, for at least a couple of months to come close to seeing a lot of it! ;P
