Bah. The graphics card won't run my games. My new graphics card needs a different power supply cable. I have a power supply that will run the graphics card, but the mobo plug is wrong for this system.
I ordered a PCI splitter that should work for the old power supply and my new graphics card - there's room on the power supply - but it won't be here until next week. My local Microcenter didn't have one.
This effort is starting to roll downhill. :(
I'm a fogey who finds gift cards so... sooooo.... impersonal? Cold? Unthinking?
I definitely get how some would get that impression, especially if the card is for a generic store like Wal-Mart or insert local mall here.
A card to a place someone who knows me well will know I'll appreciate fur more than just its monetary value, like the local used books and games store I love, is less empty-feeling as a gift.
Definitely not knocking cash, tho! 100% with you on cash. Well until the drugs and Hamilton bit. >.>

Mmmmm... cash. Crinkly and sans provenance.
ill shovel some cash in an envelope and send it to you.
Im sure it will be better received than the turkey.
Also, you could use the cash to buy turkey.

Whelp,...
Contractor came, prepped, and removed all of the old paneling in my front room.
I have come to the conclusion that;
1) Uncovered house walls are UGLY
And;
2) There are certain arguments that I will never win with my wife. Which is why the old paneling is being replaced by sheetrock instead of new paneling.
Speaking with my mother today, I came to realize that she and I are, perhaps, the last 2 people on the planet who still like paneling. :P

Two of the bedrooms in my house have paneling. I don't mind it, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan of it either. Apparently neither were the previous owners, since they painted one of the rooms white. Why they didn't just replace it with drywall, I don't know. It was kind of odd at first, because I would be laying in bed half-asleep and then jolt awake thinking the wall was cracking. But I got used to it.
Lol, Yeah My front room WAS all very dark paneling, which the previous owners painted a dull beige. (It was either just a cr@%%y color, or cr@%%y paint, either way, ugly) I understand WHY they did it, the front room must have been a dark hole, even with the huge window in the front wall. I just don't understand why anyone would put ugly paint paint over beautiful wood paneling. :)
My dining room on the other hand only has the paneling up to the chair rail, so my wife is gonna have to live with that. (And it matches the dark cabinets in the kitchen too. And NO WAY can I afford to replace those! So deal with it!) :)
I keep telling my wife, when we win the lottery (LOL!) we can live anywhere she wants, BUT:
1) I'm building a castle,
and
2) MY personal study will be wall to wall beautiful wood paneling

President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho was our best president.
Benny should have been our first prez. No offense to GW, but DAMN the whole tenor of our Executive branch would have been different. We are a nation of precedence. Having a scholar, scientist, and writer as First president would have been a great start

Oh, I agree that he would have done a good job. Popularity is a major factor in getting elected, though, and Franklin's efforts with getting allies and treaties weren't quite as flashy as being general during the Revolution.
I think things were still relatively loose with elections at that point. He might have ended up a good compromise candidate if Washington hadn’t been able to stand for office
True! Certainly would be an interesting alternate history to speculate.

Like perhaps a focus on a chain of scientific establishments to foster learning in the new country.? There’s a good alternate history for you: steam power and the like gets much more attention, possibly jump starting the industrial revolution early. Perhaps with better farming implements the agricultural South isn’t as Hell-bent on preserving slavery and settles for a buyout scheme. Racism would still exist, but the constant oozing wound of the Civil War’s legacy would be gone, with all that entails. Having been recompensed and left with their plantations, perhaps Jim Crow would not have been so virulently advocated by the Southern elites.
Ooh, I like that.
Highly unlikely- if anything, eugenics would probably have started earlier. Remember, non whites were not people. The science of the time would have encouraged that thought. It would take a lot more than steam power to remove that type of thinking.
Then again, it sounds like we are going into Deadlands Pre Sequel territory here- any Deadlands players here to flesh this out more?
