Matter Eater Lad and Arm Fall Off Boy were just supposed to be jokes who tried to join the Legion.
The Legion writers were very big on tryouts and rejections in its day.
Somehow the public liked the idea of Matter Eater Lad and he was later admitted.

Matter Eater Lad is still one of my favorite Legionnaires.
His powers are quite scary. Hes eaten the guns and weapons out of people's hands before, and started gnawing through someones life support systems when they were in space to get them to talk/surrender.
Arm Fall Off Boy had at least one interesting take on his powers in a short story I think where he did some addams family esque stuff.
Cut off the teenage warhead part and the name is cool.
Strong Guy was an in joke. Even he laughed at his own name.
Paste Pot Pete changed his name the instant he realized he was a joke.

On the upside, one thing I've always loved about the Green Lanterns in general is that DC has unapologetically got dozens of characters running around with pretty much the same costume, the same codename and the same power set, and there's no big deal attached to it, unlike say, multiple people going by the name of Captain America or Spider-Man or Wolverine, over at Marvel, which causes people to lose their minds. It's not the name, the costume or the powers that make the character, and Kyle Rayner is very different than John Stewart, for instance, and that's very cool.
I think that one of the big differences is that the Green Lanterns were INTRODUCED as an order of people that all had the same powers, etc. Hal Jordan was never THE Green Lantern, he was A Green Lantern.
Contrast that with Captain America, or Spider-Man, or Wolverine, or Iron Man. They were unique individuals. It also doesn't help that Marvel gave a lot of the "replacement heroes" a really big push at the same time. It comes off a way more artificial.

Though from time to time various people have gotten upset about their particular favorite GL being sidelined in favor of another.

I remember Matter Eater Lad biting off someone's finger!

They were unique individuals.
To me that's the thing. They still are. Steve Rogers is very different from Bucky Barnes or Sam Wilson, Logan, Old Man Logan and Laura have huge different personalities, as have Peter Parker, Miles Morales and all of those clones of him. I might not be happy about how some of those stories were told, but that goes for some of the Green Lantern origin stories as well. And the Green Lanterns also used to have one GL per sector, which mad Hal Jordan pretty unique as well. Now we have 6 (?) earth Lanterns and I have to admit that I'm not seeing how that is so much different from having several Wolverines, Spider-People etc.
So to me, it's pretty much the same, in the end, it's about the story and about the character behind that mask. My main gripe with Peter Parker's death was not that they replaced him with Octospider (that story was pretty awesome), it was that they stopped telling Peter Parker stories (even when I knew it was only for the time being).
And I've to admit that that was the only time I was kinda angry at all. Most of the time, I like their new take on an old Trope and suprisingly often, I do prefer the new version to the old one (exception: Peter Parker again ^^).

Question about the Controllers.
Why did they only capture Oans.
What about the Zamarons?
They are all evolved from the Maltusians and have the same energy, even though it is used in different ways.

They told Gathnet they will be going after the Zamorans next. I think the Oans were just easier to get at the moment since they are basically scattered and solo around the place.

Whether or not Matter-Eater Lad is powerful, or popular, or cool as a character is beside the point. FreeholdDM claimed The Signal was the worst superhero name ever; I dispute that.
Even ME Lad's planet of origin is a joke: [Pepto] Bismoll.
again, we disagree.
Matter Eater Lad is a cooler name than The Signal.

As I recall, Batman explains that the first knight on the battlefield is the signal knight, which is where the name seems to come from.
As far as any abilities, he can see other spectrums or some such and has the usual assortment of gadgets as the rest of the team along with hand to hand training. i'm not sure that he should be out on his own, however, and might need a partner or two.

I can't believe they canceled Superwoman. What's more, they took away her powers. :(
I have seen some previews of what they are replacing it with and so far I am not impressed.

I gave up after Zero Hour honestly...
That was the only sane response. And yet they keep telling us they're fixing it with this reboot or that totally-not-a-reboot.
A recent issue of...Action, probably?...reviewed a semi-random mashup of Superman's past histories and [self-]praised it as a perfect, seamless backstory where everything made sense. B#!~!, please.

I have often wondered, why only the same group of people going on these missions.
Waller supposedly has hundreds of villains incarcerated in Belle Reve, yet she is not utilizing them.
I would think she would send different people with more mission appropriate powers on some of these missions.
Come on, Harley Quinn?
The only thing she has going for her is a big hammer and a bigger crazy.
Captain Boomerang?
How many times has he been killed and brought back to life now?
