shaman's spirit....

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

is there a way to get a spectral version? like one that is an actual spirit but solid. and what's the wandering spirit?
any useful info about the shaman would be appropriated.

Spirits are like the Clerics domains or the Witches Patron, or perhaps best thought of as sort of a mix between the two. They are not a physical or spectral entity. A Shaman forms bonds with Spirits (which are embodiment of certain things like Fire or Lore). One Spirit is a Spirit you have a permanent bond with. At 4th level, A Shaman can form a temporary Bond with a different Spirit.

To answer more then that I'll need more specific questions.

shaman sounds great but to me the spirit animal seems solid-ish? i like medium but their spirit is humanoid. i would play a medium if it could heal and its ghost thing was animal.

The spirit animal is a familiar, basically. I don't believe you can get a spectral familiar. You can get one which glows or looks a bit spiritish; look up the flame or heavens spirits.

Mediums don't get any ghost things which you can see (the spirits they channel aren't ever seen or substantial), but they can definitely heal. Check out the hierophant.

Maybe a spiritualist? Their phantoms may appear humanoid by default but making one animal shaped should be an easy refluff anywhere but in PFS. The onmyoji archetype lets them grab a few cleric spells for healing if desired.

Or a summoner. Even the 'unchained' summoner can cast spells like ghost wolf or phantom steed ('chained' has more options), and they can get a limited amount of healing via summon good monster, or via expanded summon monster.

is it a normal animal or is it a manifestation of a spirit in animal form that can be seen?

'A spirit animal is a creature chosen by a shaman to serve as a conduit' which I think means it starts as the former. Since it gains the outsider (native) type you could argue that it becomes the latter.

You can take the figment familiar archetype.

Grand Lodge

This is incomplete, but something.

You can take the figment familiar archetype.

Not with a familiar that you use to gain your spells, no.

The book specifies witch's, not Shamans as being unable to use the figment. If they didn't want shaman's it would specify "any class that communes with their familiar to prepare spells" instead of simply Witches.

how does the wandering spirit abilities work?

Unofficial designer clarification was that it was close to the ACG, and not all Shaman stuff was taken into account, so it should apply to any class getting spells from their familiar. Which is to say, expect table variation on that.

The Bones spirit animal is a bit ghostly.

Spiritualist phantoms can be refluffed as animals without changing the mechanics. Mine is generally a giant centipede coiled around the ghostly body of their last victim.

Damn, James just had to attack a good thing huh?

It's one of the few ways for Witches and Shamans to protect their familiar outside of telling it to stay home. At that point though why not have a spellbook!

Of course, that clarification is still unofficial, and it's always possible minds will be changed by the time there is an official clarification.

what is ACG?

Advanced Class Guide.

Also kind of happy that Paizo doesn't errata Player Companions.

No Errata, but the Companions do occasionally get addressed in FAQs. I fully expect the Protector Archetype to get nerfed there some day, because of its interaction with Tumor Familiar.
