Agreed! Though the more I think on it, the muddier the water becomes. 7th Sea uses a variant of the Roll-and-Keep system, as does its older brother, Legend of the Five Rings. AEG owned both of these properties, so it made sense that both games would use their in-house engine. Well, now John Wick Presents owns 7th Sea, and Fantasy Flight owns L5R. I've suspected ever since I heard of the L5R sale that FFG will use their own in-house engine to power any L5R RPG they create, and the fact that AEG still had the rights to 7th Sea and Legend of the Burning Sands meant they didn't have the rights to the RnK system.
That's a really long way around to ask "will JWP have the rights to utilize the RnK system in a 7th Sea 2.0, or will he have to use some other engine to power the task resolution?" No idea there.
The press release also states that they haven't sold 100% of the rights back to Wick. They're withholding "rights to publish a number of products within that line over the next few years." Smart money would be board/card games, as that's what they've positioned themselves to do moving forwards, and leave the slim pickings products (i.e., RPGs) to Wick.

Well John Wick Presents fully funded 7th Sea...with the most successful Table Top RPG Kickstarter ever!
At $1,316,813 raised and 11,483 backers—both the highest ever for a TTRPG—they have a full release schedule into late 2017! They have also cracked open two more Kickstarters to come (one for The War of the Cross, a diceless board game set in 7th Sea's Terra, and another for 7th Sea: The East a second RPG designed around the Far East of Terra and acting as a second brand), a trailer to perhaps create a movie set in Terra, and are working on getting a set up like the DM's Guild on DriveThruRPG to get third parties creating new adventures for the game.
All in all, the future looks bright for 7th Sea! :D
