If you could summon any type of bear with it, even descriptive, gay men looking for company would have a new class to be their champion.

Augmented!

No, you're thinking of Mount.

I dunno, is a trouser snake a snake?

Eh, I'd allow it. The stat blocks for an owlbear and a grizzly aren't appreciably different, and they're both listed as 4th-level options for Summon Nature's Ally. Besides, the ability in question just says "bears" - there's nothing restricting it to the animal type.

Bear is to Owlbear in the same way that Java is to Javascript.

I say anything with Bear in its name is a bear.

This includes all NPCs named Bear.

Bear Gryll is really going to be surprised when he starts tobogganing again.

What if you magically separated the bear from the owl using a vorpal sword? Would the bottom half count as a bear? Do bears need heads to count as bears?

Javascript is a deranged genetic hybrid of java and scripts? Logic checks out!

Javascript is even worse than putting me in an owl mask.

...

Please don't put me in an owl mask.

Just because a sword is long, it's not necessarily a long sword.

A dragonne is not a dragon.

Secure shelter is not a spell with "cure" in the name.

Uh...

A sword that is long is a long sword. Not a "longsword", but a long sword. A sword that is long is literally a long sword.

Secure shelter does have "cure" in the name, although it's not a cure spell. Cure spells heal people by (sl)d8+(cl) damage, or a number of people for a lesser amount. And secure shelter does not have "cure" as its own word, which is a key point.

What about a ManBearPig? I think that is half man half bear and half pig.

This was my thinking. Hell, I'd allow werebear if it was on the 4th-level list. Bear is bear. :P

I think you kind of missed the point.

The Exchange

Short answer: No

Long answer: Totemic summons were meant for animals, not magical beasts. An owlbear is a magical beast.

Where is that writ? Where does it say totemic summons are animal-only? The druid is channeling the ideal of "bear", not the ideal of "Ursidae". ;P

He's got you there. Owlbears are, indisputably, the ideals of bears.

Owlbears do not throw better parties, though.
