Unique Alchemist Concept - Video Game Player

Advice

So my son is playing an interesting concept for his newest character. Before I get into this I will preface with saying if you have a problem with characters breaking the fourth wall then this is probably not the thread for you.

The concept was for his character to be highly intelligent and savantish but widely looked at as insane. Mostly he would be a kid who looks at adventuring as a video game and treats it that way.

Mechanically he would be a Presuvationist Alchemist with Planar Preservationist and all the typical summoning feats. The bottles he keeps the critters in are going to be his Pokeballs or a synonymous thing and he may actually name his common summons and call the name when he summons them.

He also later is planning on picking up the simulacrum discoveries so that he can "save his game", and "get a free guy" or "1-up".

He is looking for other concepts in feats, extracts, etc that would lend themselves to this theme. And perhaps some advice from anyone who has tried a similar concept.

Goggles of status so he can see healthbars would be cool. Yea he has 10 hp left hit him with your sword! What's a hit point?

Declindgrunt: Heh, love it. That is exactly what I am talking about.

I should also mention he is covering the role of healer by taking Infusion, Delayed Bombs, Remote Bombs, Implant Bomb and Healing Bombs. Not sure how we are going to video game up the implanted bombs.

The Infusions though are obviously going to be the classic red health potions.

I'm playing a Hunter/Skald. Not sure what I will say when I need healing. "Green Warrior needs health badly!"?

He obviously needs either a Bag of Holding or a Handy Haversack for his "inventory screen" that holds far more than what a typical person should carry :P

Ha! Inventory screen. Love it.

Has anyone played a preservationist before that could offer some insight?

Those goggles of status could effectively be a HUD showing his own health, enemy health (maybe?), status, inventory, points, whatever you think works.

You'll need a way to help him keep track of things he summons with his preservationist archetype, so maybe some flash cards with stat blocks.

The problem with summoner types is that they can take up a lot of time per round with too many monsters. So limit him to one or two at a time, to keep the game from lagging down.

If he's being healer, you can give him Infusion, Spontaneous Healing, and Healing Touch.

spontaneous healing and healing touch are effectively the "heal over time" feature that a ton of games tend to use these days. It'll run out. but it still has that "heal over time" feel

Maybe consider the healing potions "Medkits?"

I like the idea of the Simulacrums being "Save Points." Cool idea.

He'll be sure to want "Identify" to figure out "Rares"... lol

Maybe make his Buffs "Potion of Strength" or "Elixer of Intelect"

Call his Mutagen his "Special Power"

Ring of Sustenance because they never eat or sleep in games. Muleback Cord because what weight limit?, Headband of Ponderous Recollection for the Scan spell. Bead of Force or Iron Bands of Binding for catching pokemon.

For general advice, just fluff spells like game effects, and look for spells or items that address the mechanics of the game in some way (like the Status spell, or Contact Other Plane [strategy guide plz], or effects like Monster Lore or the Investigator ability that boost Knowledge checks to identify monsters' abilities and weaknesses). It looks like the ACG's Inspired Chemist archetype can sync with the Preservationist, by the way, so that'd be a way to get some investigator talents for metagaming knowledge, like Eidetic Recollection or Inspirational Expertise.

Deadpool breaks the fourth wall. You're plowing through it with a bulldozer.

::Wakes up, stretches.::

"Alright, all my dailies refreshed, lets head out and see if we can't get the mobs to proc mad loot today."

::turns to paladin, archer, and rogue in party::

"Tank, DPS, Spiderbait, time to grind!"

The Exchange

Paladin: What?
Archer: What?
Rogue: Oy?

BlingerBunny: He was working on the cards just tonight. :)

Zwordsman: Oh yeah, he is getting those too.

Snively: Oh, good call on the identify for "rares", etc. I like that. And yeah... Mutagen "This isn't even my final form!"

Cussune: Ya know, there is no real "gotta catchem all" bit for the Preservationist. Its too bad. Otherwise good idea on catching them. I'll have to look at the Inspired Chemist. It does sound right up his alley.

LazarX: So he wins against the wall? Sweet. How many XP is it worth?!

Love the RP guys. haha

I think it might be more like:
Buffomatic, Meatshield, Pewpew, time to grind!

Skald: What?
Bloodrager: Uh?
Ranger: Wassat?

Any more? I'm planning on pointing my son to this thread when I get home tonight.

I know that I read somewhere that clerics of Nethys are actually aware of spell level classification, and often refer to them as such. Might be a fun way to incorporate video gaming terms into his extract.

"Guys! I'm all out of 3rd Level Extracts! I've got a few 2nd Level, but my cooldown doesn't start until I rest!"

Wizard: "...this is why the peasants fear us."

Insane Follower of Rovagug: "I understood him perfectly."

Also, on a similar note, referring to things with their respective bonuses would be fun breaking of the 4th wall too.

"No, I can't cast Bull's Strength on you. The magics in your belt are too similar."

Becomes:

"No, Bull's Strength doesn't work with your Belt of Physical Might. Enhancement bonuses don't stack!"

At least with an Alchemist, he can talk about Crafting levels... with Magic Item Creation.

Skills would be cool to go over with him too... Perception, Craft, Survival (fishing), Hide, anything MMO related would be a good pick for him.

"Yay, I'm Third level! I got the feat and unlocked Magical Crafting! WOOT!"

Fighter: "Huh?"

"It's ok, Meatshield, you'll like the toys I make you..."

"My name's Bartholomew...."

"Whatever!"

I took a look at Inspired Chemist and it isn't good for this. It doesn't give a bonus to Int. He will desperately need that to activate his Remote Bombs. Those Int checks are HARD. He will need his normal Cognatogen.
