Unchained Charlatan - Unarmed and Unarmored (VMC Monk?)

Advice

Trying to build a character for a "Roman-Fantasy" campaign I'm currently playing. I'm not sure if I'll play it directly or build it for another player, but I like to be prepared in case of some deaths coming.

Long story short: the Party is not the typical group of murderhobo-adventurers but a mix of adventurers and leaders of a political party trying to became governors by winning the next elections.

What the party currently need is a social skilled aid to spread rumors and a flanking buddy for the few combat encounter who used to happens only sporadically.
So I came up with this idea of an apparently unarmed/unarmored Unchained Rogue using the Charlatan Archetype, to be able to enter unnoticed into a tavern, like a commoner, and spread false rumors about the party's political enemies... Also, if a brawl starts during his daily job, he should be able to survive, using his Unarmed Strikes and Sneak Attacks.

The Party is currently level 9-10, and the character will be probably created at 9.

Basically it will be focused only on Dexterity and Charisma (so maybe a Halfling could be a good race choice), no need of great Strength (due to UnRogue's Finesse).

I'm also thinking if this could be a good combo with the Monk VMC, but in this case I'll probably need another Rogue Archetype (Underground Chemist? Halfling Filcher?) to replace Evasion since it is gained again at 7th via VMC.

Any thoughts and advice?

You'll want a few points of CON in there somewhere. VMC monk doesn't give you WIS to AC, so you might be better off as a multiclass Unchained Monk/Unchained Rogue. I'd balance it out with a monk/rogue ratio of 1/8, 3/6, or 5/4. You get WIS to AC with at least a single Unchained Monk level, which will help survivability a lot. And you get Flurry after sticking with it for 3 levels. You get Style Strikes at 5, and still have time for Charlatan to kick in.

Also consider Archeologist Bard or just regular Bard for this. Archeologist gets all of the Rogue goodies, but no Sneak Attack. There's also the Demagogue archetype, but it's probably not right in terms of mechanics.

Another class that would be good for this is Memoirist from Occult Adventures.

Mesmerist. As much as an author character would be cool, that's not what Occult Adventures is for.

Sczarni Swindler replaces Evasion and is pretty great at bluffing.

Well played sir, well played.

I'd like to keep it without multiclassing (except for VMC feats), cause we have already a Monk in the party and want to avoid the Lawful alignment for this character concept too.

Also I'll avoid being a spellcaster (we had a lot, between PCs, cohorts and others NPCs), although Mesmeris is a very interesting class and I hope to build a PC with it soon or later.

I did something similar to you recently, using the Unchained Charlatan Rogue and Cleaner Slayer classes and archtypes. Shes an aristocrat who uses fighting fans when needed. However prefers to use the bluff skill and fabricate stories to get through situations.

That's very interesting Skyler Malik, could you post here the build?

I'd say at least 1 dip into the old monk (martial artist to avoid lawful) would be a decent bet. It nets you- +2 to all saves, wis-AC (which, if you want to be unarmored, high dex is key, but adding 1-2 points from wis wouldn't hurt), and a free feat (dodge, or even catch off guard/throw anything.)

This means you can avoid the need to spend a feat on Improved unarmed strike, you can also reflavor it to your liking.

Of course you will want 12-14 cha too for bluff. (Improved two weapon fient)

Honestly this is what I would go. If you wanted to be a strong melee contender while unarmored.

1-monk (martial artist)
2-8 Unchained rogue.

Stats- I don't know what your pt buy is but in order of importance

Dex-
Con=Wis
Cha=Int
Str.

Honestly dumping Str. Is OK here if you need/want. You need at least 13 int however.

Race- I like half-elf, simply for the dual minded alternative racial trait and elven immunities. Also, the alternative favored class bonus gives you +1 to fient checks and +1 on diplo to gather information.

So, you want a 20 dex from Pt Buy and levels alone -at least-

14 in con/Wis/cha is fine and int at 10 or 12 if you have spare points is fine.

Feats I would take-

1-dodge(monk), and deceitful (to fit your theme)
3- TWF
4- weapon focus unarmed strike (weapon training rogue talent)
5- combat expertise
7- improved fient
8- Improved two weapon fighting
9- two weapon fient

Rogue Talents I would pick up- coax information, and possibly minor magic.

At level ten you can take the "feat" talent to grab improved two weapon fient. Or wait till 11 and grab another talent at ten instead. Just a rough idea for you.

Silver Crusade

Since you Requested the build here it is:

Charlatan Unchained Rogue 4/Cleaner Slayer 7

Starting Stats:
Str - 7
Dex - 18 (16 + 2 Racial)
Con - 14
Int - 13
Wis - 10
Cha - 13

Feats:
Human - Combat Expertise
Bonus - Deceitful
1 - Two Weapon Fighting
3 - Piranha Strike
5 - Two-Weapon Feint
7 - Improved Two Weapon Fighting
9 - Improved Two-Weapon Feint
11 - Improved Critical: Fighting Fans

Rogue Talents:
2 - Weapon Training: Feinting Fans
Bonus - Rumormonger
11 - Bleeding Attack (Probably)

Slayer Talents:
5 - Ranger Style: Double Slice
7 - Foil Scrutiny
9 - Ranger Style: Two Weapon Defense

Have not decided whether I will get a fifth level of Rogue or not. The Bluff Edge would be nice, but not necessarily needed. Would love to fit Greater TWF, Two Weapon Rend, Blood Reader into the build at higher levels. She has turned out to be a great character to rollplay and Bluff has mitigated many combats.

Double Slice is incompatible with Finesse Training.
