That ulfen guard prc is ok. It is basically Barbarian + some other stuff, since your ulfen guard levels stack with barbarian levels to determine your rage power access.

Plus, you can even get more rage powers from the abilities in class. Overall, not bad

Yeah, it definitely fits the motif the OP wanted while also the Ulfen Guard makes for a good frontline meatshield. Trying to think of a good barbarian/possible fighter build to get the OP to the PrC thas emphasizes the shield and one hand weapon in the picture.

If you get a magic item called a Blinkback Belt, your thrown weapons instantly return to your Belt as soon as your attack is resolved. So after throwing your Throwing Shield, it would return to your 'Belt instantly, and if your Throwing Shield is also a Quickdraw Shield, and if you have the Quickdraw Feat, you can then draw it again as a Free Action, perhaps to throw it again setting up a Free Action attacking loop that lasts for as long as your GM allows you to take Free Actions. You can probably use this combination to get 1 extra attack/round anyway. If you took the Snapshot feats, you can threaten Attacks of Opportunity at Range with your Quickdraw Throwing shield.

Use of a blinkbat belt is specifically limited to one handed throwing weapons. You can't clip your shield to it. and if you could, you've pretty much thrown away the image of the classic shield maiden who WIELDS her shield, not hangs it off a belt.

A throwing shield doesn't match the concept at all. A Shield Maiden is not Captain America. A Blinbkback Belt isn't a terrible idea, if you use throwing axes as your "off-hand" weapon. You can even throw in some nice flavorful feats like sliding axe throw.

I don't think a Throwing Shield is a real thing at all. It's a make-believe weapon I am recommending for a make-believe character in a make-believe game. The only solid things we know about what the OP wants is that she wants a Martial Character who likes shields and axes. Exploring the idea of throwing the shield is perfectly valid as advice for the OP.

False.

Up to two one-handed melee weapons or up to four light melee weapons can be hung from the belt in straps or sheaths.

A light shield is a light melee weapon.

I have not. My advice was to get a Light, Quickdraw, Throwing Shield, a Blinkback Belt, and to take the Quickdraw Feat. Once she has all those things in place, throwing the shield is a Free Action.

Then re-drawing the Quickdraw Shield is also a Free Action since she'd have the Quickdraw Feat. As long as she doesn't do something like make a Claw Attack with her Shield Hand, she will be able to use her Shield Bonus to Armor Class.

I guess you can say my advice is creative, and therefore not classical, but my vision of the OP's Shield Maiden wields her shield quite well.

My Viking doesn't have a spike on his shield since the various Viking shields I've seen generally aren't spiky. 1d4+Str is good enough for me! (plus enchantment, Power Attack, inspire courage, etc)

You can usually stick to your theme and still come up with a playable PC. Where things get tricky is if somebody more optimized shows up and steals your role in the party. Checking with the other players and trying to plan your PC with them can be fun, especially if they agree to do slightly goofy stuff like take teamwork feats with you and or get in on your "Viking" theme.

To me the obvious choice is magus with skirnir archetype.

I think the OP wants to avoid casting spells, so the Magus might not be a good fit.

Just want to say that picture in the OP is awesome - very characterful! :)

My thoughts into doing this to go into the Ulfen Guard PrC:

Take Viking archetype of fighter for five levels, human for race.

1st: TWF, Improved shield bash, double slice
2nd: shield focue
3rd: iron will
4th: saving shield
5th shield slam or extra rage

Then at 6th level you go into Ulfen Guard PrC. Take the heavy armor specialization.

7th level take Improved TWF

Put puts in the required skills for the prestige class. I would take both Shield Bearer and Shield trained for traits so make sure you are worshiping Gorum.

My idea for a true shield maiden is a person willing to put their shield out to help their allies. The Viking archetype and Ulfen Guard PrC fit this character theme like hand in glove.

You have to wait until level 11 to pick up shield master but the rage from viking and the prestige class will stack together. Ulfen Guard is one of the few prestige classes that are actually really good.

I'd like to recommend the trapper ranger.

As a trapper the hardest thing is getting them to go on your traps, but with some free shield bull rushes you can effectively make someone move on to your traps with some 5 foot stepping to set it up.

Also because the ranger is very good at skipping Pre requisites, you'll enjoy some amazing benefits.

Or skirmishes if you want some basic tricks. Still no casting and both are very resourceful viking types.

Past that I have to agree fighter viking is a great build for this, and perfectly fitted too. Just thought I'd offer a lesser taken trapper archtype if you have the power to knock people around.

Somehow I think the OP has bailed.

Ulfen Guard with a Brawler protege could wombo combo some teamwork feats with

Quote:
Teamwork (Ex): Each time she begins her rage, the Ulfen Guard can select a teamwork feat (Advanced Players Guide 150) that her chosen ally possesses; this must be a teamwork feat for which the Ulfen Guard otherwise qualifies. For the duration of her rage, the Ulfen Guard gains the benefits of that feat. This guard dedication can be chosen multiple times; each additional time allows the Ulfen Guard to select an additional teamwork feat at the start of her rage, thus granting her the use of more than one teamwork feat simultaneously.

Could be fun.
