By the way, with regards to the shifting Jedi code, here's a nice (if fairly casual) analysis from Loose Canon.
She has some great insights, but also mixes those with characterization some elements of cohesion in the larger EU (I'm guessing at least in part, this is a time-compression/editing error - while the tone of the EU was often inconsistent, the lore was surprisingly so, over-all).
Still, some solid thoughts worth thinking about.

LOL! Did they really think Rey wasn't in the Monopoly because of sexism? She is in every other Hasbro product, FFS!

This argument amuses me since bother Avatar and Star Wars were cobbled together from other stories.

If you liked Avatar, go read the Mri Wars trilogy by C.J. Cherryh. A lot of people said Avatar should have been called Dances with Wolves in space, but the Mri Wars trilogy was published ten years before Dances with Wolves the novel.
Look, there are no lightsabers in either written work, neither has much to do with Star Wars, so sue me. :P

Like the Republic before it, those over grown blue smmrffs remnants of a past age have been swept away.
That's fantastic! Given the huge amount of work, energy, and downright love JJ and everyone else poured into The Force Awakens, I'm thrilled and proud to see it achieve such a milestone.
It will be very interesting to see what happens when it opens in China this weekend!

Let's just coddle and make excuses for Ben Solo becoming a mass murderinget nutjob.
Why don't you add affluenza to it too?
You have to wonder how many times Han used him to get out of a debt.

I finally saw the movie!
I liked it.
It wasn't as good as other Star Wars films. 4, 5, and 6 were better. But I give it about the same as 1 and 2 in goodness. Anything is better than 3 was so... Yeah. Unlike his Star Trek films he uses little character moments which made the film so much better than his attempts at Star Trek. Kinda like he learned a trick from his buddy Whedon. The plot was completely rehashed from older Star Wars films much to my great disappointment. But in true Abrams fashion he gives us action and plenty of it. In retrospect I would much rather a predictable rehash plot than a film with a really bad plot, so that is also an improvement.
Overall good movie, and fun to watch. Even if it could have been better.

Can you imagine being that Stormtrooper in every other battle up until that one
"Um, excuse me, excuse, Captain Phasma, sir, ma'am, excuse me, but it looks like I was issued this force blocking weapon again."
"That's correct, Dan. We only have one of those and it was made with specific calibrations that only work with your armor. Good luck Dan."
"but, Captain Phasma, ma'am, sir, um, you see. I've been sent out thirty five times now, and um, well, you see, the other Stormtroopers are well, sort of you know..."
"Get to the point Dan."
"See, there's talk, um, a lot of talk, you know. And some of the guys and some of the girls are saying that I've, you know, never actually engaged any enemies, you know, yet, what with that whole Order 66 thing, you know. and some of them are even calling me."
"66 degrees of Dan, yes I've heard the nickname. It's sort of cute."
"Aw, Phasma, come on."
"Hey, don't worry Dan, we are going to break up something going on at a cantina on the next planet, hmpph, snicker, maybe there'll be a jedi this time. You never know. Good Luck Dan, hehe."
"aw, man."

Oh, the super gimmicy dumb stormtrooper with the powered weapon that only exists in the one scene where Finn puts his light saber training wheels on? I guess the First Order only had one of them.
There really hasn't been a whole lot of call for someone with that weapon lately. But I admire the genre saviness of stormtrooper training that says to STOP SHOOTING AT ANYONE HOLDING A LIGHT SABER.
Being the guy assigned to that weapon has to be like the kid playing right field. He NEVER gets the ball and was so excited when he finally got to do something.

Y'know... they may not have gotten much use 'lately'... but every SINGLE time the Empire has a misstep... it was due to someone holding a lightsaber.
Add in that 1) Jedi DO exist again. Luke had a training facility and was training jedi for how long? 30 years have passed since ROTJ, are we to assume that NOBODY ever graduated from his school? Possibly... Kylo massacred the school... but so did Vader and Yoda and Obi-wan escaped... so 'Oh yeah... they are all dead' is a HORRIBLLY flawed assumption to go on. (again)
most importantly... 2) They were hunting Luke Skywalker. There were clues on the first planet.... the clue was in the droid... The Resistance was following the map... At ANY one of these stops, he could be there. The whole movie wasn't a search for a droid and princess.. it was a hunt for the last jedi master and WHICH side would find him first!!
It would really be foolish NOT to have a few people prepped and trained to fight a lighsaber. Obviously Ren wasn't good enough to handle him on his own... O.o

Lemmy wrote:Didn't that guy have a blaster as well? And he called Finn a traitor right before he engaged him. I chalk it up to the trooper letting his anger get the better of him.
"Shoot the little traitor? NO! I'm killing him up close and personal!"
He was part of Finn's original unit. So he was probably extra ticked off and feeling betrayed by Finn.

Here's hoping that lightsaber-blocking thing is used by Phasma to make her a real character... I'd hate for her to turn out to be the new trilogy's Boba Fett... Supposedly competent villain in cool armor who doesn't do anything well in the movie and is easily dispatched. :P
You left out that she was also easily intimidated into compromising the defense of that vitally important First Order base.

I'd love for her shiny shiny armor to be some sort of expensive experimental stuff that can at least partially mitigate blaster fire (if not lightsabers), to make her that one stormtrooper in the galaxy whose armor actually has some sort of protective value.

That's sort of a point against claims that Rey was left out of Monopoly solely to avoid "spoilers", isn't it? :P

I wouldn't say "was also easily intimidated into" so much as "made an informed decision to adversely modify her side's defenses in order to ensure she would survive to fight another day".

That trooper also had a small shield. I'd guess the baton and shield are used for subduing people they don't want to immediately kill, but haven't surrendered yet. They aren't standard issue, because the FO doesn't do a lot of subduing prisoners, but it wouldn't be a bad thing to keep around in a squad.

Well... Kinda... But at least she wasn't killed by a blind man... By accident.
