Douglas TBD Devastators were mid-WW2 USN torpedo bombers (well they first flew in 1935, which doesn't portent well for an '42 combat aircraft). They were withdrawn from service after 35 out of 41 present at the battle of Midway were shot down.
There are very few Cliff Claven facts I know in this world that come close to Star Wars. World War II history is one of the few.
I was asking Randarak if he meant he missed the Star Destroyer Devastator which was named after Douglas TBD Devastators of the US Navy. I know their history well.
You are definitively correct. Sadly after their woeful performance and severe losses at the Battle of Midway (considered the turning point of the Pacific theater) there were pulled from active service.
Interestingly enough they were replaced by the newer Grumman TBF Avenger, which gave its name to the Star Destroyer Avenger, which Han later tricked and used to make their escape from the Hoth System asteroid belt and served as the lead communications ship at the Battle of Endor.
Further all films in the OT start with a scene showcasing a Star Destroyer.
It is the Devastator we see in the Star Wars A New Hope and gets the distinction of being the ship we all thought would never end as it gave chase to Leia's Corellian Corvette, so it's the first Star Destroyer we ever see in the OT. The Avenger is the Star Destroyer we see bringing Darth Vader to the Death Star II, in the opening scene of Return of the Jedi.
While for many years the Avenger was considered the ship seen in the opening scene of The Empire Strikes Back, and has the distinction of launching the probe droids that eventually found the Rebels on Hoth, this was much later retconned that while we see the Avenger launch probe droids, it's actually the Stalker who launched the probe that found Echo Base.
I ... I really think I need help.

Minor spoiler for The Force Awakens and logical leaps in speculation.
Based on that, we can make some inferences.
Now a very select few have been allowed to pilot Han's pride an joy. What is even more telling is Rey is in the main pilot's seat and not the co pilot's.
Which means she has some piloting skills and even more importantly has somehow won the trust of one not easily won over Corellian named Han Solo.
Would she then be his offspring as other have speculated?
And if so, Chewbacca's Life Debt to Han would carry over to her just as it has for Leia.

Its also a little known fact John R has a one line quote in a Bridge To far. When he was a Calgary expo last year I got him to sign an autographed Empire pic. And then he blew me away by quoting exactly the line from a bridge to far. Great actor, great dude.

That statement was intentional, as I am aware of that as well :)
John Ratzenberger plays Major Bren Derln in The Empire Strikes Back but does not reprise the character in Return of the Jedi and the role is portrayed by another actor.
Further in the Star Wars card game there is a line in Major Derlin's card that states "When in the Cantina, Power +1 and may spend 1 Force to cancel Local Trouble" and "at the Mos Eisley Cantina, everyone knows his name."
When you played that card combo at a tournament it was traditional to shout "Cheers."

I always thought he was on the Executor when travelling to Death Star 2.
In the Marvel comic adaptation and the newspaper comic series it is the Executor we see that takes Darth Vader to the Death Star II, on screen in Return of the Jedi the Executor has a more important passenger, The Emperor himself.

I LOVE that movie.
Among the best lines on cinema.
Lt. Colonel J.O.E. Vandeleur: "Remember what the general said; we're the cavalry. It would be bad form to arrive in advance of schedule. In the nick of time would do nicely."
--
Field Marshall Gerd von Runstedt: Let's get to the point. Air power?
Major General Gunther Blumentritt: Air power, Field Marshall...
Field Marshall Gerd von Runstedt: Briefly, please.
Major General Gunther Blumentritt: Air power is minimal.
Field Marshall Gerd von Runstedt: Ammunition?
Major General Gunther Blumentritt: Also minimal.
Field Marshall Gerd von Runstedt: Tanks, troops, replacements?
Major General Gunther Blumentritt: Minimal.
Field Marshall Gerd von Runstedt: Morale?
[Blumentritt hesitates, then says nothing]
Field Marshall Gerd von Runstedt: [sighs] Nonexistent.

SSgt. Eddie Dohun: Where's the captain?

What is this based on? It seems to me very much in-character for Anakin Skywalker to hop into a fighter and go do battle in space himself.
If the rebellion used BTL-S3 or BTL-S3Bs, the y wing squadron would have been the heroes of yavin.
I think you won this one. And a decent chunk of the internet to go with it. Also, you made me realize I'm nowhere close to being knowledgable about Star Wars :P

As he has been portrayed in later sources, sure, but I doubt Lucas had that much of a personality/backstory for Vader at the time ANH was shot.

So we were tossing around numbers..apparently wookiepedia says 25,000 IMP1 star destroyers were built and who knows how many IMP2's, let alone escort craft like the Nebula's.
So that being said, how many Imperial ships were at Endor? I know the movie doesn't show more than 30 capital ships simply because of screen limitations, but I would think they would have needed more than that to prevent any rebel ships from escaping?

So we were tossing around numbers..apparently wookiepedia says 25,000 IMP1 star destroyers were built and who knows how many IMP2's, let alone escort craft like the Nebula's.
That Wookiepedia number was an extrapolation, as there were 24 Star Destroyers per Sector Fleet (West End Games Canon until Disney), and there were at least one thousand Sectors (at least 1,000 Moff's) in The Galaxy.
Add to that the fleets attached to Grand Moffs, Grand Admirals, a certain Sith Lord, and other fleets "off the books" and you get roughly 25,000+ Star Destroyers and 100x that number in smaller warships, and some ten thousand times that number in TIE's and support craft.
So that being said, how many Imperial ships were at Endor? I know the movie doesn't show more than 30 capital ships simply because of screen limitations, but I would think they would have needed more than that to prevent any rebel ships from escaping?
According to most accepted sources the number is 44 Star Destroyers plus/including the Executor, and off screen Interdictor Heavy Cruisers (West End Games The Courtship of Princess Leia Source book and The Essential Guide to Warfare) to prevent any escape to lightspeed.
The Empire could have brought in even more ships of course, but moving that number could alert the Rebels of the trap they set and The Empire believed (correctly) they had out gunned the Rebellion significantly by several factors as it is even without the Death Star II.

That was a pretty obvious spherical space station in the new poster. Yet another death star or something else?
Traditionally The Empire's Super Weapon Turbolasers {TM} are green, there seams to be a large red beam that can be seen from the bridge of the Star Destroyer which is in this trailer's 50 second mark.
I'm almost positive that's the ruins of a docking bay Rey is rappelling into in the opening of the trailer. Possibly a Star Destroyer.
Possibly Lupita Nyong'o's voice in the trailer?
My biggest take away from this trailer:
It's rather telling that the events of the Original Trilogy — Episodes VI, V and VI — have themselves become somewhat mythologized in the Star Wars universe.
“There were stories about what happened,” says Rey in a voiceover.
“It’s true. All of it. The Dark Side. The Jedi. They’re real,” responds Han Solo.
I dig it.

The trailers really didn't build my expectations. Right now I expect I'll be sorely disappointed by it. However...I think that's a safe opinion to have because, unlike someone who is excessively hyped for it, if it turns out to be bad...I don't have any thing to really lose. On the otherhand I can be pleasantly surprised if it actually doesn't stink.

Though the newest trailer is somewhat better than the first one. I still hate that football droid. It looks like something a 5-year-old on a sugar-fueled rampage would design.Lord Snow |

Seeing as how it's the pet of the woman - who in this trailer is revealed to be some sort of scavenger - I would not be surprised if she built it herself, possibly as a child. So the somewhat silly design could actually make sense.

The trailer left me a touch worried, I just can't put my finger on why.
And no it's not the soccer ball droid.
Is it the relative shortage of white male leads?
'Cause that's apparently a thing for some folks out there.

Just came back to the doctor. Great news. My depression affects me in such a way that I can no longer be excited about something like a new movie in one of my very favorite franchises. Unless I opt to take some sort of medication which will slowly turn me into a drooling zombie.
So I guess I would be hyped after seeing the trailer.
