Heroes of the Wild

Pathfinder Player Companion

Liberty's Edge

I did not find a thread on this one so starting this.

I did not find much benefit to this one, and i was disappointed that they did not clean up earlier archetypes (like firstworlder summoner) as earlier 'Hero' type books had done. I unchained is all the rave, and rightfully so, but this came out a near the same time and i was well. underwhelmed.

Heroes of the Wild is part of the Player Companion line, and I've moved this thread to that forum.

I really liked the Wild Caller summoner archetype. Shaping your eidolon from the plants around you seems like a fun concept.

Liberty's Edge

i agree its good. I was just hoping for more out of this one. Previous such books cleaned up earlier items that were missing or poorly worded. This one did none of that.

Didn't we already have a Wild Caller archetype in the Advanced Race Guide under Half-Elves?

WHY DOES PAIZO KEEP REUSING NAMES!?

It gets mighty confusing!

This came up on the Product Discussion page.

Short answer, it was a mistake that Owen has been beating himself up about since it was noticed. So maybe cut the guy a little slack. He goofed. It happens to all of us. IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey if all caps is good enough for you it is good enough for me.

Speaking of mistakes, I found a small one:

Also not the end of the world. In fact, this particular small mistake is almost always good for a chuckle, imagining a makeup compact attempting whatever the sentence says.

Question: is the mentioning of outsiders in the Order of the Green archetype a typo? Because everything else is about aberrations and undead.

Other than that, I really like this companion! The herbalism rules are light and fast, nothing clunky like the majority of d20 herbalism rules I've seen over the years. The witch archetype is just sexy.

My only complaint is the spell nature's paths - any GM allowing this should be aware that wilderness exploration will become a non-issue, especially if you're hexcrawling or if a wilderness treck is supposed to be part of the adventure itself. From my point of view, this is way too powerful for a level-1 spell.

I saw a couple of others, listed here. Still no word on whether they were intentional or not.

At least the plant-based Wild Caller does something different from the half-elf version. :)

Owen explained why the outsider bit is in there. :)

As for nature's paths, I'm kind of with you. I'm not sure I'd let it speed up hexploration, since it's only for the purpose of overland speed, and the hexploration rules are specifically different because of the more thorough aspects of exploring. It's a grey area, though, and your general point stands. :)

Because I failed Developer Due Diligence. Worse, I made a change to keep it from being very close to an existing archetype name... and made things worse. Mea culpa, and apologies. I hope to avoid ever doing it again.

I bought this and Unchained last week. Both are exceptional. I was a little disappointed there wasn't as much for rangers but I found a few feats I like regardless. Lots of good material, although if Owen had somehow managed to sneak in a couple of the archetypes from Knacks of Nature (the Tercel archetype in particular would have been nice but I digress)I would have gotten more out of it but a lot of great ideas in here regardless. And lest I forget thank you for doing a little more with the Green Faith.

I thought this was one of the most creative and useful Companions in the last year or two. I loved it. The Feyborn racial traits are brilliant and easily swapped in. While not certain I would want to limit my summons to plants with the Wild Caller archetype, I KNOW I like the Summon Plant Ally feat...I get Treants?! REALLY?!?!?!?!?!? I have got to give this to the First World Summoner I will make sometime soon...

Hi Fourshadow!
There's no reason that you have to limit yourself to plant summons with the Wild Caller... you can call anything from the summon nature's ally list! But of course, taking the Summon Plant Ally feat then opens up a bunch of plants as options, so I personally will be only summoning plants with my Wild Caller! :)
Glad you like my archetype!

I got this as a present for a friend, and they were very happy with it! Great job, Paizo.
