Witches do not need brooms?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Maybe this is a question for the designers:

I'm just wondering why witches don't need a broom to use the Fly hex. It seems to be the most iconic thing about a witch. Why the omission?

Sovereign Court

They already need the cat familiar.

Making them need a broom, black pointy hat, and warty nose is overkill.

Pathfinder tries to avoid making class abilities gear-dependent if possible.

Nothing stopping you from USING a broom if you feel so inclined...

Maybe consider a broom "the perfect tool for the job" and grant a +2 to the Fly skill when using a broom and magical flying?

Shadow Lodge

Some witches used ointment.

The witch in my old Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign tied some straw to the end of her Staff of Necromancy and flew around with it between her legs. Good stuff.

No, all witches should have warty noses. Oracles have curses! so why should witches get let off the hook?

Baba Yaga and others beg to differ.

Because that would be stupid.

Because the real-Earth reason for associating witches and brooms is R-rated and not suitable for players of all ages, so maybe they just wanted to avoid it entirely.

An entire generation of witches did this -- the Baby Broomers. However, older witches got tired of it. The older witches lowered the broom on the Baby Broomers, sweeping away the new generation's advances in housekeeping-related avionics.

And then there was the Martian witch. She rigged up a zillion of these things to explode. But it didn't work, and she wound up exclaiming, 'But I expected a Golarion-shattering ka-broom!!"

I believe there is the Broom of Flying magic item should they make, buy, or find one and choose to use it without sacrificing their own abilities.

Also, a lot of witches don't fly at all.

Why brooms anyway? Wouldn't they be uncomfortable to sit on?

Scarab Sages

They need them if they want to sweep the floor...

Shadow Lodge

There's an item called the Broom of Flying, which sort of negates the need for the flight hex.

My witch uses a broom as a Masterwork Tool (Fly). Everyone who hears about that idea loves it. I need to be holding it to benefit from the bonus.

Because maybe my Witch character that I play as a tapdancing priest wants to fly without having to ride a broom because...reasons? Don't enforce flavor with rules.

There's already a magic item for that so the hex would be redundant.

I'll require brooms if you agree that all wizards have to have the beard - yes, even the female ones, the reptilian ones and the undead ones! Iconic... hmph!

Items can be stolen or broken, hexes can't be taken away.
