Noon question: Skill Focus Linguistics

Does taking the Feat: Skill Focus in linguistics allow me to learn three extra languages? One extra language or no extra languages.

None. Your languages known is based on your RANKS placed at level up, not on your total BONUS which is an amalgam of your ranks, Int bonus, and everything else that adds to it.

Unfortunately, your actual bonus in linguistics only adds to very specific situations (like forging).

I think a couple places vaguely imply that you can use it to slowly try to pick some phrases (the "Where is the bathroom?" kind of thing when you go to another country)

I think you could also theoretically just mime at the creature that you want it to write on a parchment, and then you decipher that (DC 20 if I remember right).

It is extremely hard to near impossible to actually have 2 way communication, at least in a timely manner, based off of your actual linguistic check.

Skill Focus (Linguistics) is incredibly useful for an Empiricist, though!

It's also a prerequisite for a couple of recent feats that let you substitute Linguistics for other skills.

How so?

yeah...a quick search shows no mention of linguistics in that archetype, and only the briefest mention in the investigator class (mostly that they can add inspiration to it for free, and there is a talent that lets you roll twice/best result for inspiration with it and a few other things)

Maybe it has to do with the Orator feat?

Quote:

Orator

Prerequisite(s): Skill Focus (Linguistics).

Benefit: You can use a Linguistics check in place of a Bluff check to tell a falsehood or conceal information, in place of a Diplomacy check to change the attitude of a creature, or in place of an Intimidate check to force a creature to cooperate. You must deliver your attempt in a language the target understands.

Versatile Performance light! Kind of. It's either that or the Student of Philosophy trait.

Ah, that makes sense. Particularly since investigators get free inspiration on linguistics. That makes it very versatile.

Indubitably.

Orator is one of the feats I was talking about... I think the other one may be specific to Asmodeus? From Inner Sea Gods, maybe? When I used it, it was on a powerful Hellknight signifier, so I can't remember if it was or wasn't religious. I believe it let you use Linguistics in place of Use Magic Device for scrolls (which is handy when you're trying to bind outsiders using the witch list).

Esoteric Linguistics. WELP. I now know the next character I want to make! :D

EDIT I never knew this feat existed before you mentioned it and I looked it up just now. AWWWEEESSSOOOOOOOOOMMMMMEEE~!

The feat Cosmopolitan gives you two languages.

The rogue trick Guileful Polyglot gains four languages (two initial, plus two more when you have a rank invested).

I was asking about it because I want to get the orator feat and to learn as many languages as possible.

My halfling Genderme Cavalier with the Polyglot racial trait and dungeon dweller trait wants to do something useful out of combat.

So I figure he'll learn a lot of languages and at level five he will be an excellent party face.
