I've always been a fan of Hex "G," so when it started to look like half the board was going to be empty, and like Guardheim was one of the teams that wasn't planning to show up, I decided to see if I could keep the settlement alive. I wrote to customer service and asked (as a former holder of Hex G as Elkhaven) for permission to act in loco parentis and be able to accept company memberships for it for the War of Towers. I was vague, deliberately so I admit, but did nothing to hide who I was. I said flat out that if anyone with a better claim or interest turned up, I was happy to turn it over. That was, in fact, always my hope and expectation. I was approved to control a tower-permissions company for Guardheim. My choice, in my thinking, had nothing to do with Ozem's Vigil, and I deliberately did not inform Ozem's. Nobody knew but two of my friends, and I treated Guardheim as a special, and separate piece of my PFO life going so far as to try to work out deals with Gale Windswept (of Blackfeather Keep) and the folks at Alderwag to try to build a single strong crafting team with its membership spread across multiple settlements.
People inside OV found Guardheim convenient to use for crafting, and started trying to help it be a better crafting settlement, offering to take towers and turn them over. All of this by email, as I avoided talking to anyone live because they all knew me as part of their team. Eventually the interactions became humourously impossible, as we were unable to co-ordinate and ended up repeatedly killing each other in an effort to help one-another. At this point, I decided it was impossible to manage on that level. I informed the OV members present that there was no one else to talk to as it was me. I also wrote directly to Ryan, to make sure there were no mistakes about what was happening. He reviewed things, and decided that it wasn't appropriate to transfer management of the settlement's companies, and InGuard (along with Guardheim's current participation in the Tower Wars) was dissolved.
Some of the other leadership of OV generally felt that I had put them in a difficult situation by not informing them in advance, but that a commitment not to take such actions in future without talking to them first would smooth things. While acknowledging the potential for fallout to the group, I disagreed with them on the relationship of my actions to the group, and was unprepared to promise I'd never do anything like it again (I take promises very, very, seriously), but didn't want to cause a strain within the group, so have chosen to give up my leadership position (and probably any ties at all) .
I'm not posting this out of any need to clear my own chest, but because I'm looking for another group in which to participate, and don't want anyone that takes me in blindsided by this down the road. If you take me as a citizen, you'll be getting someone who's committed to the letter and spirit of the game, but will not always necessarily agree about how much control other people have over my personal actions.

That's a pretty cool gesture.
Unrelated:
I hope you believe us when we say the incident between Rathglen and such was really just mostly bad luck and timing, and that in our minds PvP of that nature is in our own weird way a sort of hello between equals, not a "personal attack".
The reason I say that is because I hope you understand that we (AGC) is also here and committed to the spirit of the game, even if seemingly on the other "side" sometimes. I know we've had some rather sharp and spirited debates here on the forums, but I really respect your forthrightness and consistency in manner.
That being said, I feel I'm not overstepping to say if you need a place to hang out, where there is activity regularly, folks are "free spirited", and protective of what others say we can do, and where the people sincerely are just about having fun, then you are welcome to come down and hang with us.

Fair winds Caldeathe Baequiannia!
You already know that I am distressed over your choice, but respect it (as yours to make) at the same time.
Your energy and brains will be a real boon to whomever you join. I fully expect that we will be grouping, trading, helping each other's settlements, and just plain friendly as before.

Different organizations have different ideas on guilding the player vs guilding the character. You just need to make sure you find a group that follows the latter model rather than the former. Based on what you said, you did nothing at all wrong; like most relationship failures this was a simple case of mismatched, unspoken expectations.
For reference, Iron Tusk guilds the character.

Cal is welcome with the Wilderness Wanderers, if he so chooses :) It is worth noting that I was considering attaching the WW to Ozem's Vigil for the time being. That's not to say that Cal couldn't join the group attached to Phaeros, or start a new WW group in another settlement that is welcoming to both player and company! ;)

You're welcome in Kobold Town anytHAHA PSYCH because there IS no Kobold Town it was all a CLEVER RUSE and now you're TRAPPED
Anyways, Cal, you're one of the classiest people on this site (and I absolutely mean that with every fiber of my Being doll made from organic plant fibers that I keep at the back of my dresser and play with when nobody's looking). Wherever you end up, that settlement will gain 110% respect in my eyes just by association. Best of luck.

Thanks for all the kind offers, folks. And for being the kind of community you are. It's not an easy decision, but Erastil's Irregulars have narrowed it down to a small number of preferred options. We just need a little more internal discussion.
Just to let you all know, joining the bandits is still on the table, but isn't getting much support.
