Mythic or Gestalt??

Advice

A small group of us were planning on playing Kingmaker and having Mythic characters.
But I have been reading the forum and it seems Mythic isn't as good as we hoped. From what I read, it starts fine and quickly de-evolves into 1shot = 1dead.
Does everyone who has experience with this agree?

Would Gestalt characters be a better option? I have never tried Gestalt, so I don't knw if I woul dbe replacing one broken OP way with another.

Any opinions?

I mean, you're asking "what's going to kill an aardvark less - an A-bomb or an H-bomb?"

Neither are terribly "balanced", really.

One has you gaining 2 Class Levels for every 1 Character Level you obtain, and the other is slowly turning you into a god.

The main difference is that Mythic has a definite cap on it: You can only hit Mythic Tier 1 at lv2 at the earliest, Tier 2 at lv4, etc., and that's ONLY if you've accomplished an appropriate number of badass moments to warrant advancing to the next level (which is decided on by the DM).

Mythic would put more control into the DM's hand - that only certain events in Kingmaker qualify for Trials, so the DM can effectively put a hard cap on the Tiers your group could attain (it's very possible to be a CL15 character and only have 2-3 Tiers).

---

Personally, I really like the Mythic rules, but only for bosses (it's seriously a pretty sick system for making boss creatures).

Mythic doesn't cap you based on level, that's just a recommendation. You can hit tier 10 at level 1 if your GM allows it.

It's not an as-written rule, but I'd say treat it as such regardless.

Tier 10 characters can effectively qualify for godhood in all but name - 4 Domains, 4 Subdomains, no need to eat or sleep, immune to non-mythic illnesses, poisons, etc., and can't be killed except by Major Artifacts. There's really no reason a lv1 character should have god-level powers.

I mean I wouldn't be cool with that. I was just saying it's doable. I guess a less extreme example is a level 12 character with 8 mythic tiers would be allowed.

Gestalt is far less powerful, but far more FLEXIBLE.

Gestalt doesn't really double a character's power like it looks on the surface, it's more an increase of 1.25-1.5 depending on what classes you pick.

For the most part, the main benefit is each character being more self-sufficient and covering more roles.

a Fighter/Cleric has less need for a healer, for example.

If you're trying to go for a marvel superhero sort of theme, then go mythic. I would not allow mythic vital strike, though.

All rules in Pathfinder, including everything in the Core Rulebook, is mutable by the GM as he wishes. They're rules, but act more as guidelines for play.

Well, in either case, the DM decides what is and isn't a "Trial", and so the DM has a lot more control over the Tiers. With Gestalt, you'd have to put a Level Cap down in order to try and control things, which may or may not create really annoying problems with the AP.

As long as the DM remembers that every 2 Tiers up the APL by +1, and adds some Tiers to bosses himself, it shouldn't be too crazy to do a Mythic Kingmaker campaign.

Silver Crusade

Gestalt, easy. Mythic is just as unbalanced as the normal Martial/Magic divide, where Gestalt can close that gap hard with the right combination of classes. Mythic is mostly for busting open the action economy, so if you want them having more actions, Mythic is pretty okay, but Gestalt is hype.

I've run and played with both mechanics and my choice would be gestalt as it is easier to control as a game master as the power ups are slow and steady and its easy to pace your encounters to your party.
Mythic on the other hand can spiral out of control rather quickly.
Mythic tiers tend to have uneven power boosts and can leave you scrambling to find a challenge for your players. I did notice that the mythic system tends to make glass cannons. This is just my opinion but for more more balanced game i would use gestalt.
