Sometimes I hate Forbes, and sometimes I like them..."To sum the game up in just a few words: This is Halo with RPG elements and co-op, minus the great story and narrative trajectory of the best Halo games." -
Removing the thing I loved most about the Halo series seems backwards to me. I guess I was in the minority.

To get on Topic,
The reason Destiny does not have much depth is because they are basing this on their experience making Halo, and FPS shooters.
Further more looking at Destiny, the game player is simpler, more pick up and go play for a bit, and world static.
PFO on the other hand, has more advanced gameplay, requires some learning, and the world is shaped by the player's actions.

Content requires assets. The more money it costs per asset, the less content you can provide given equal budgets. Once you establish an expectation of quality level, you cannot cheapen it by adding lower quality assets to boost content without upsetting the user base. This means that the development of new content is also prohibitively expensive. Better Graphics = Less Game has been a trend for a long time. But mainstream folks have typically tended to favor the better graphics. The model for this game requires quick iteration. That can be done more effectively at a lesser asset quality. We are going against the trend to get to More Game.

Then again Destiny has very much more smooth and better polished gameplay loop and controls.
But let's ask the more important question what is the better tool a screwdriver or a heavy intustial mining drill?
Also: 500 mil is the budget for the Destiny franchise including marketing and not just the direct development cost of Destiny (1).

We had to sleep on a bit of dust, while ogres threw rocks at us all day, and skeletons all night.
Luxury ! We had to provide our own skeletons, and pay 2 coppers for the priviledge !

Gm you had a gm I had to give birth to my gm and then wait 17 years for him to grow into the job.
You may think Iam just being funny but I played my first dnd game in th 70's and my second one 25 year later when my son Joey was old enough to play/run a game.
You have a son to DM for you? You lucky so and so. I had to make my own DM out of dirt clods and cigarette butts. He won't run anything but GURPS and he always kills my character in the first encounter and then makes snide comments about it for the rest of the evening!

This is the topic: getting us to stop posting in that other thread. Right, sspitfire1?
I did say this...
*Read Guurzak's last comment from a certain dead thread*
Now I feel guilty! I'm creating a new thread.
and this...
*Subtly communicates with you*
PEOPLE! LET THIS THREAD DIE! Its title is *terrible* and never should be allowed to see the light of the top of the forum threads ever ever again! Now be good, responsible citizens of the River Kingdoms and move your tails- er, tales of.... whatever over to the new thread:
"Destiny: $500 million and it STILL can't touch the depth of play GW will achieve with PFO"
in a certain now-deceased thread that shall not be named.
But mostly Nihimon made me do it.
This thread needs to be bumped, often, and by someone who knows how.

Really, Guurzak deserves the credit for pointing out what should have been obvious; whenever we bump a thread, we should be mindful of what the thread title is, because we're keeping that thread title front-and-center for every visitor to see. Like headlines for news stories, thread titles can have an impact even on those who don't read anything else.

$500 million including marketing versus, what, $1.5 million including marketing? No contest. GW wins.
Activision reports they made $500 Million the first day.
