Is it worth it to convert Dragonmech?

Conversions

So, how well does Dragonmech mech rules translate to Pathfinder? I hear things about it and want to convert mechs over to pathfinder but I know nothing about it and wanted to know more before I commit to buying a copy.

I found it quite enjoyable, and will be doing some conversion of Mech's to pathfinder for our Kaiju supplement for Pathfinder.

I was going to say they should be on d20pfsrd.com as well, but they don't have them all listed yet.

I'd still need to actually wander upon them as I'm looking for enemies.

The Exchange

We didn't include the ones that were unique Paizo creations because those would be Paizo IP. If they're in the PRD now I guess that makes those few 100% OGL (unless I'm mis-remembering and parts of the PRD are NOT OGL?) Will double-check before posting the missing Kaiju.

If its in the PRD, its Open Gaming Content. That is the entire point of a PRD or SRD - a collection of Open Game Content.

From the PRD website:

Quote:
The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is released under the Open Game License, meaning the core rules that drive the Pathfinder RPG system are available to anyone to use for free under the terms of the OGL. This compendium of rules, charts, and tables contains all of the open rules in the system, and is provided for the use of the community of gamers and publishers working with the system.

Well screw converting then! If you're going to make mechs then why would I bother. Plus I've liked most things that I've bought from Rite Publishing.

So yeah... /thread.

I have two Dragonmech books sitting on my shelf collecting dust. I know I've seen a PF conversion for the classes somewhere online, but I seem to have lost those links.

It's a cool setting, and the reason I purchased the books was because it reminded me of the anime Escaflowne (series is better than the movie in my opinion). I tend to borrow some of the rules for the mechs and combine them with my coveted Airships d20 book to emulate the feel of Escaflowne.

As for Rite Publishing doing fantasy Mechs, I wholeheartedly support this idea and will absolutely be purchasing said product.

It converts over well, as does the mecha d20 book for 3.0. I have had one player run a kobold mech pilot that sat inside a magical dinosaur golem. For mecha d20, as your mecha pilot leveled up he would get points to build up his mecha, which could have abilities ranging from missiles to spell abilities. They balance pretty well with existing pet classes, but the nice thing about the mecha d20 rules AND Dragonmech is that take mech/personal combat into consideration. Your biggest mecha are walking cities, and the steam cannon/steam powers/steam borg from Dragonmech are really fun for a steampunk style country or even lost Azlanti tech, or new discoveries by the Gunworks of Alkenstar.

Where can one purchase these books in pdf?

RPGNow has the PDFs.

Dragonmech PDFs by Goodman Games.

There is also Doomstriders by Bastion Press, d20 Mecha by Guardians of Order (now owned by White Wolf), d20 Mecha Deluxe Compendium by Dream Pod 9, and an 8 volume Mecha Manual series by Art of War Games.

Actually I found the d20 Mecha Deluxe Compendium at a use book store and started converting.

As far as I could tell I had to generate a Base Save, CMB/CMD, Propulsion, and Driving Check to make base 'models'. and instead of mecha points I'm currently converting the special qualities into enhancements. The enhancements will work like weapon and armor enhancements ranging from 1-5 and no mecha model can have more than +10. I also wound up limiting them by charges set like the weapons from the technology guide so that they don't get out of hand unless you're near a generator and have a reciever attached.

Also last night I came up with a 'Mage Class' Mecha type that holds magical charges and spells like a staff. This is mostly because for the most part the rules don't give casters a real ability to use mecha with a real efficiency since some fieats and BAB are still relevant. Also working on Esper class mecha for psionics, Swami class mecha for Akashic classes, and Sphere class mecha when Spheres of Power's item rules come out. I'll probably post in a new thread one of the converted mecha in another thread.

I have d20 mecha by DP9. Didn't know about the others...

Silver Crusade

*coughshamelessselfpromotioncough* Excuse me, hayfever. Dragonmech has some interesting concepts, but really doesn't balance for a full party without major tweaking. That is, one PC gets the giant robot, and the rest of the party gets...umm...not the robot. The height/weight/size comparisons also will need some tweaking to fit the more regular 3.5/PFRPG assumptions. That said, I definitely used it as a starting point for designing a mech vs. kaiju adventure, In Iron Clad. Just don't expect a simple straight "update the skill list and hit die" sort of conversion.

One thing I kinda felt was breaking my fun in Dragonmech was the fact that almost every mech in the game needed more than one crew member; there wasn't a default mech that you could control all by yourself... or if there was, I haven't seen it.

On a sidenote, there was a PrC that allowed a pilot to merge with his mech... except that on second thought, he would still need crew members to operate some of his components... which basically breaks the idea of becoming a mech that you can control on your own.
