Let's play a game, you're building a character with 40 levels, but cannot progress past 20 levels for core/base/hybrid class, nor the max level of a prestige class as it is written in its source material.
This effectively means you get two 20 level capstones, or a prestige class capped and a single 20 level capstone, or any number of other combinations. This is all purely for fun. Archetypes permitted as well.
I'll start us off: Alchemist and Sorcerer (sage archetype for ability synergy), getting one of the bloodlines that grants immunity to an energy type. Top it off with a bunch of Detonate extracts, and become a constantly exploding, self-buffing maniac.
So, how awesome/powerful of a character could you make with 40 levels?

One for fun, rather than power (and currently the 'gestalt' I'm using in a 1 on 1 with my fiance). Naturally, modified to fit with this: Winter Witch (Base) 10/Winter Witch (PRC) 10/ Unlettered White Mage Arcanist 20. Just totally jack your witchiness factor to 11.
Finace's idea: Expert 20/Commoner 20 = "I'm an Expert Commoner!" (for fun!)
Edit:
Fighter 20/Brawler 20 = Let's have ALL the feats!

Wizard 10, Cleric 10, Mystic Theurge 10, because: spells.
Bard 1 and Dragon Disciple 9 because: even more spells, +4 str, +2 con, +2 int, +3 nat armor, can use several weapons.
Will saves not a problem, Fortitude ok, Reflex ... what is a reflex save?
The bard level can be exchanged for 1 level of magus with the new archetype that make him a spontaneous spellcaster, or with 1 level as a sorcerer and the Sage bloodline (so that he become a intelligence based sorcerer).

Next time read the rules, friend, no classes past their regular maximum.
Here's another one, Barbarian + Alchemist. Top Rage and Top Mutagens. I also buff myself.
I'm reasonably certain he/she was just being a smartass.

- Wizard 20 / Alchemist (Mindchemist) 20. Save-or-lose Wizard on performance-enhancing drugs.
- Wizard 20 / Hellknight Signifer 10 / Magaambyan Arcanist 10. Or something. Use your caster level 40 with spells that have no damage cap.
- Sorcerer (Arcane) 20 / Oracle 1 / Synthesist Summoner 19. Take Noble Scion at level 1 to get Charisma to Initiative. Use your one Oracle level to gain Charisma to AC and Reflex, and (via Incorruptible Aasimar) qualify for Divine Protection - Charisma to all saves. If we have a level 40 character's WBL, abuse Arcane Apotheosis to build a Staff of Wishes and power it with low level spell slots. Load up on defensive evolutions for the Eidolon.

Cavalier (Order of the Sword) 10 / Mammoth Rider 10 / Mounted Fury Barbarian 20
Mastodon mount has the Racer Archetype.
Riding a huge/gargantuan/colossal Mammoth and adding its strength to yours 1.5 times, giving it rage bonuses and bouncing them back to you... Also, the Mastodon's base speed on a charge will be well over 600, so you're now packing a nuclear lance, a stupidly huge reach, and a steed that moves stupidly fast.
You're now an ICBM.

As much as I despise theorycrafting and character builds, this one made me laugh.
Well played, sir.

Okay -- how about Fighter 1/Cleric 3/Wizard 16/Eldritch Knight 10/Mystic Theurge 10? You can pretty much ignore spell resistance with your wizard caster level of 35, and you can also cast up to 7th level cleric spells at cleric caster level 13.
I guess you could make that Fighter 1/Cleric 1/Wizard 18/Eldritch Knight 10/Mystic Theurge 10 if you can come up with an early entry method to get 2nd level divine spells from a race with +2 to Int.

Wouldn't the CL 35 be overdoing it a bit? Short of fighting someone with Spell resistance based on their HD who was also 40 it would really never come up. You'd probably be better off trading out your eldritch knight for more cleric so you could achieve 9th level divine spells as well.

Well, I was kind of going for getting the highest caster level I could, as well as assuming that the GM would come up with worthy challenges for these 40th level characters (including level appropriate spell resistance, which most 40th level builds would have no shot against).
It also occurred to me that I could make this combination less MAD by going oracle/sorcerer instead of cleric/wizard. If I select the Battle mystery and the Skill at Arms revelation, I do not need that fighter level to qualify for Eldritch Knight, but one of the Eldritch Knight's class features does become unusable. If Wealth by Level scales appropriately, I should be able to acquire Pages of Spell Knowledge almost as easily as a wizard learns new spells.

What's that, oh you're trying to cast a spell on me? Well as long as I don't roll a 1 it fails. Seriously 10 Levels of good Reflexes, plus Evasion, 40 Levels of good Fortitude and 40 Levels of good Will Saves, plus Charisma to all my Will Saves, and 20 Levels of Lay ON Hands? I'm the end boss of your nightmares.
Oh, I forgot Stalwart.

20th level Zen Archer/20th level Inquisitor. Flurry of Greater Bane, Judgments and a few buffing spells get insane amount of damage. Throw in Cluster Shot and Hammer the Gap for more damage. With proper items I can get over 1000 point of damage in a round. Massive damage rules means this will kill any living thing.

If it were me, personally, I'd go with a variant of Arcanist 15, Cleric 15, and Mystic Theurge 10. CL 25 is nice, plenty of spells of all sorts. I'm not too concerned with the whole adventuring thing, though I'd go looking for mythic tiers at that point, really. I'd prefer something Arcanist-like for cleric spells for maximum flexibility, but, eh, it's cool. I might go with sorcerer/oracle/mt instead for the SAD.
Anyway, it's basic, it's magic, and I could solve all the world's problems given time. :)

If my 20th-level PFS character were to continue gaining experience, I'd probably shoot for something like...
Rogue16/Monk2/Fighter2/Swashbuckler3/Bard7/Master Spy10
There's really no one to fight at her level, so it would really be about topping off her combat ability (assuming Swashbuckler3/Fighter2 gets Weapon Training), then bumping those skill modifiers, acquiring a constant mind blank effect to deal with pesky divinations, and getting those saves up "just in case."
With high enough skill modifiers, she could direct world events however she wishes.
Now, if she got to be CR 40, though, she'd totally just add on Aristocrat20/Expert20 for the skill points and the wealth-by-level alone.

Empyrial Sorcerer / Monk - not sure which archtype.
Alternately, as you are already high level, so can use nice magic items and bracers for armor - Paladin/Sorcerer (celestial bloodline).
Sorcerer spells, and great melee.
Wizard 10, Cleric 10, Mystic Theurge 10.. and some other thing. Must have All the spells!
Yes, I like Spellcasters.
Gunslinger & Alchemist. Run it as steampunk.

Well straight out the gate . . .
Ranger 1 (maybe slayer 1 still debating), arcanist (arcane bloodline) 9 and eldritch knight 10.
For the other 20 levels its a tough call either monk (5 styles) 20 or ninja 20.
I like the fighter/mage/thief concept but I also like the idea of a mage who can beat the living daylights out of you with their barehands if you get inside their range. Hmmmm maybe a mixture of monk/ninja to get some sneak attack and some unarmed abilities. Shame there isn't a hybrid monk/ninja class.
EDIT
I also would go hunting mythic power at that point in order to get all those nice don't sleep, don't eat, don't breath, immortal abilities mmmmm. I'd also look into leadership + improved familiar so my grimalkin (dnd cat like shapeshifter with the curioisity of a small child) so could take class levels and be a true companion in life.
EDIT 2
This build also gets me chi and magic, if I could figure out a way to add psychic powers in there I would.

A variation of this, inquisitor 20/ZAM 10/evangelist of Erastil 10
Everything MS said, plus Wis to attack and damage rolls on top of the normal Dex/Str combo.
