Vestigial Wings

Advice

I am considering a Tiefling character with the Vestigial Wings alternate racial trait. I wont take it though if it never becomes useful. Is magical Fly the only way to use the +4 bonus to Fly skill that the wings grant? Is there any way to use Fly skill without the Fly spell or a magic item?

Thanks

I don't think there is, I am happy to be wrong though.

Mutagen warrior arch with wings discovery, if you are playing a fighter.

Though wouldn't the wings discovery override/replace the wings the race came with?

The wing cloak and the glider are both non-magical. As far as magic, there's plenty of spells/items that use fly other than just a fly spell.

The discovery says you gain a set of wings not replace. The vestigal says they aid in stabilizing flight gained from another source. Far as I can tell you would have one stunted pair for stabilization and a pair for actual flight.

I'll admit I don't know spit about the Alchemist and mutagens so I wasn't sure about the wing replacement. Also I was trying to visualize a tiefling with two distinct pairs of wings, one functional and the other vestigial.

Multiple Wing sets is not unheard of

There is

  • The Wings discovery for alchemists
  • The Fly spell
  • Overland Flight
  • the Flight Hex(at 5th level)
  • the Lure of the Heavens, Wings of Flame, Wings of Air, and several other oracle revelations
  • the Wings, On Dark Wings, Wings of the Heavens, Elemental Movement(Air), and several other 15th level Sorcerer bloodline powers
  • the Flight evolution, combined with the Aspect class feature
  • the Lure of the Heavens Shaman Hex
  • the any of the Beast Shape line of spells(if used for the right kind of spells)
  • Elemental Body line of spells(If used for an Air Elemental)
  • the Form of the Dragon line of spells
  • the Air Blessing's Major Blessing
  • Probably several other class features/feats/combos/spells.

Would various polymorph methods work? I mean, you get the +4 from the wings you were born with. Unless I am misremembering something, you lose the abilities and bonuses connected to your physical form when you take on another shape.

Anyway, the vestigial wings could stick around as an additional pair of wings that act like a bird's retrices (tail feathers) while some class ability gives proper wings.

(checks Polymorph subschool)

Huh, would you look at that. Learn something new each day I suppose.

While under the effects of a polymorph spell, you lose all extraordinary and supernatural abilities that depend on your original form (such as keen senses, scent, and darkvision), as well as any natural attacks and movement types possessed by your original form. You also lose any class features that depend upon form, but those that allow you to add features (such as sorcerers that can grow claws) still function. While most of these should be obvious, the GM is the final arbiter of what abilities depend on form and are lost when a new form is assumed. Your new form might restore a number of these abilities if they are possessed by the new form.

Thanks for the replies.

Graystone: I was thinking of other spells that could make use of the Vestigial wings but Feather fall Levitate and even Glide dont seem to employ the Fly skill in any way RAW. I just wanted to play a warrior. Ive been looking at Blood Rager as a Warrior with spells to eventually use the wings.

Its kind of disappointing that the magic you need to use them makes them redundant anyway.
