Need a good tough monster for a desert area....

Need a good tough monster, CR 7-9, for desert area. Something that would make trying to cross the desert very deadly for normal people.

A Desert Drake might be the appropriate levels of jerkitude/power.

The crimson worm( A vareint of the Purple worm) is nice.http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/magical-beasts/purpl e-worm/crimson-worm

Liberty's Edge

Sphinxes come immediately to mind, as do Rocs, prides of Dire Lions or Manticores would also work, though those are lower CR individually.

Deadfall Scorpions, Gorgons, Young Blue Dragons, Bodaks, Titan Centipedes, Efreeti and Hellwasp Swarms all seem appropriate as well.

Two CR7 monsters are better than one CR9. Two dessert drakes acting in a clever way could be though enought.

Giant Advanced Ant Lion?

Mongolian Death Worm

Only CR 6, but you can bump that up with a template, and come on, how can you say no to a death worm.

I'd agree with the sphinx suggestion. There's 3 different one that fits the CR range you desire. Androsphinx hits at CR 9, Criosphinx at CR 7 and Gynosphinx at 8. Flying, magical abilities, intelligent and to some degree mysterious.

Silver Crusade

A pair of bulettes could make for an interesting fight as well.

Or, even better, they encounter a desert drake and a bulette is drawn to the area by the combat and they have to deal with both.

Level ten chaotic evil human sorcerer.

Young Blue Dragon.

Thanks for all the ideas!!

Maybe a field of (Giant and/or Advanced) Dust Diggers?

The colossal sand shark from Korra Season 3 might be up your alley. It's big enough to swallow a sand skimmer and it can swim through sand dunes the way a shark goes through water.

To make this take a shark, remove the aquatic quality, upsize it to taste with advanced templates and give it one hell of "sand glide" ability and a jump attack.

Scarab Sages

Have you checked the back issues of Wayfinder?

Specifically, issue 10, with its focus on Qadira?

Er, yeah... You've never heard about the landshark, have you?

This thing would eat a bulette for an appetizer.

During the day, the 120 degree temperatures and lack of water should make any sane person stay clear.

A couple of Brass dragons with the vampire template should make it even more dangerous at night.

Also, great potential for story in how brass dragons acquired the vampire template. If full vampire template is too strong, consider making them spawn under control of a different type of vampire.

How about a roc?

Roc.

A Pairaka Div with a few class levels could be interesting.
