Are You A Selfish, Lazy Product of an Entitlement Society?

No.

I drive to Starbucks every morning, then to McDonalds for breakfast (I never
drink McD coffee, it is nasty.) Then, I get my daily groceries from
Trader Joe's (because they are higher class), and return home to watch
movies on the internet all day. At night, I lay in bed and play games on my iPhone.

Repeat.

I'm confused - None of those things you mentioned are really selfish? Lazy, yeah, (I mean, sitting at home watching internet movies - going two places for your coffee/breakfast seems like a huge pain in the butt, actually) but selfish?

Of course, every new generation is lazy, selfish, and entitled according to the generation that preceded it. Society is always going to hell in a handbasket.

Is this thread meant to be an honest complaint or a parody? It's becoming very hard to tell.

I'm still trying to get past someone going to McDonalds for breakfast, but complaining about their coffee being nasty and going to Trader Joe's because it's higher class.

Perhaps drugs or NPR were involved...maybe both.

You forgot the other possibility... "Grab for attention."

I was pretty much ruined for life by an on-the-cusp-of-puberty run-in with Theodore Roszak.

Later in life I ran into Paul Lafargue and since then I've been pretty much useless.

I am surprised he hasn't mentioned public schooling in his first post...

If I was gonna play this angle I'd bring McDonaldization and how you expect your food and coffee to be prepared almost instantaneously and the exact same way every morning. Or that maybe while in your bed you check your social media to see how much attention you've gathered in 'likes' and 'reblogs'. Or maybe you drove to trader joe's instead of biking/walking there. I don't know man, I'm trying to help you out xD

Lets see, i've never in my life ordered anything from Starbucks (and i once lived in Seattle!) and i cant afford to eat breakfast at McDonalds or shop at Trader Joes i dont want an iphone, nor need one, i also have never had Cable, like ever, in 37+ years.

If I want breakfast, I strip naked, break the ice on a lake and then wrestle an Arctic Plesiosaur into submission. Or I may stun a polar bear with one punch and then use it as a furry greatclub in order to kill several other polar bears and then consume their reeking carcases raw, even the livers. In the unlikely event that I eat, wear or use anything that I haven't slain myself in unarmed combat, I will gnaw it out of solid granite. At night, I stand proudly beneath the great, yellow moon, bellowing "I live! I LIVE! I LIIIIIVE!!!", basking in the awe-inspiring immensity of Savage Nature.

i hate netflix, we use Hulu a lot tho and we get DVDs of Always Sunny and Archer when they go on sale, we do have a home:) and i spent 10 years as a Sous Chef and Baker, so i can make way better food myself for cheaper then i could get at either Trader Joe's or Mcdonalds

I'd love to be, but sadly the entitlements just aren't enough to keep me comfortable, so I have to go to work every week.

On the other hand I was lucky enough to be born to educated middle class parents with no abusive traits and to have a knack for math and similar things, so I got a good education (and had the resources to cover screwing that up a couple times) and get to work a not highly stressful computer job that I enjoy and that pays well enough.

Excluding a cumulative 18 months of involuntary unemployment, I've been working since I was 15 (27 years). Of course, I've never had physically demanding jobs -- cleaning and washing dishes at a restaurant is as close as I've come. So from a global perspective, I'm definitely lazy. Hell, I honestly don't know how bricklayers, etc. make it to retirement, but more power to them.

I am undoubtably the most critical of entitlements here on this board and even i see no issue with legitimate disabled getting a livable payment

We do it the same as you i suspect, one day at a time and try to keep all your limbs attached (which isnt easy i guess when you're cutting bricks with a 30 lb chop saw with an 18 inch radius blade) i'm not a brick layer, i'm in rock work with landscaping (patios, walls, boulder fountains, restoring hillsides, you know the easy part of it:)

It's a little easier to keep all your limbs attached and in working order when you've got a desk job.

I've got a couple of older friends in various building trades and they're all in pretty rough shape. I don't know if they'll make it to retirement age, still being able to do what they do. All those injuries you shrug off in your 20s and 30s come back to haunt you.

Something I hope all the lawyers and politicians who haven't done any physical labor since they were kids keep in mind when they think about raising the retirement age again. Or, more importantly, I hope enough people remind them of.

well i'm a small guy (5'7" 140 lbs) so i have to work smarter then the bigger guys in my field, and i'm actually in way better shape both physically and stamina wise then most everyone i know thats my age (almost 38) no back problems for me, i use gravity and pivot points to my advantage:)

Scarab Sages

No. I earned everything.

I joined the military at 18, with nothing to my name, and busted by ass for 12 years, earning my college tuition. (and only lost vision in one eye)

I busted by ass in college, payed for by my military service, earning a degree with top marks.

I got myself hired into an entry level position, using the college degree I earned and my military service as qualifiers.

I have earned 4 promotions in the past three years at my comfortable desk job.

=====================================================================

I have no issue with the legitimately disabled receiving social security. Most would prefer their health and a decent job.

My background was very low income, however, and I am very familiar with ways to cheat the system. Single mothers who declare they have lost contact with their children's father to qualify for subsidized housing, food stamps, free medical etc. Meanwhile, the dad works off-the-books doing construction and comes home every night.

People selling food stamps/EBT cards for cigarettes and beer while their kids eat raman noodles every night.

People in their 20's claiming disability due to drug addiction......

These are the people I have issues with.

Interesting article.

I only use a clothes dryer because I now live in a city and don't have access to a clothesline.

I used to live on the hillside in the country where we had almost 200' of clothesline strung up between the trees. Unfortunately, there were no jobs there.

Ah, finally some one actually bites on the troll.

And really, in a less entitled society, you'd be kicked out of the military when you lost vision in that eye and be begging on the streets.

Poor people getting to go to College just for military service is a exception, historically speaking. College is for elites who deserve it.

Mind you, I think it's a good idea. Though I think free college education for everyone is a good idea, so what do I know.

i would agree that USEFUL college educations being free is a good idea. society gains nothing for a bunch of phy ed and women's studies majors but needs more doctors and engineers.

Yeah...tell me about it...I regret my Russian Literature degree, and really wish I'd have switched to geology and mining...

During the early 1970s, there was a significant push to make tertiary education in Australia more accessible to working and middle class Australians. The Whitlam Labor Government abolished university fees on 1 January 1974.

Then the f#&~ing baby boomers after they got their free education did this.

In 1989, the Hawke Labor Government set up the Higher Education Contributions Scheme (HECS), an $1,800 fee was charged to all university students, and the Commonwealth paid the balance. A student could defer payment of this HECS amount (in which case it was called a HECS debt) and repay the debt through the tax system, when the student's income reached a certain level.

In 1996, the new Howard Coalition Government, while otherwise retaining the HECS system, created a three-tier HECS fee structure. Fees were charged on the basis of the perceived value of courses. Courses considered to have most likelihood of generating higher income for students in the future (e.g. Law and Medicine) were the most expensive and those least likely to generate higher income (e.g. Nursing and Arts) were the least expensive. At the same time, HECS charges increased by an average of 40%. Universities were permitted to create full-fee places on which they could charge full up-front fees to students who missed out on a HECS place.

Nope.

There are many kinds of societies in this country. I was the product of a very religious one rather than an entitlement one.

Oh, and I am not selfish... as for lazy? We all have our demons and mine seems to be procrastination.

You're not supposed to wash blue jeans. If they start to smell, you're supposed to turn them inside out and put them in the freezer for 2 days. Or spray them lightly with vodka.

Indeed. That is why I prefer to work alone. Others merely get in the way. I set down my own priorities at twelve. I gave away all my money to start from scratch. Since then I have fought tooth and nail for everything I have. I do not exaggerate when I say I have succeeded. Nothing makes you appreciate a ridiculously expensive bottle of wine like buying it for your own money, earned from your own sweat and blood. But it is not just money. Money will not help you when the solar flare shuts society down. You need to know how to protect yourself with guns, a variety of other weapons, and without weapons. You need to have a strong body. Know how to find food. Hunt. Negotiate. Judge whether others are lying. And so on. In every area, I excel because I chose to. My will is as sharp as a razor and as firm as granite. Entitlement? Oh yes. I am entitled to quite a lot of things.
