Mage Hand use to hold a ranged weapon

Rules Questions

we're all new to pathfinder (obviously) so I'm just wanting more experienced GMs advice on the situation below.

little background: basically our sorceror thought he would use mage hand to control the shortbow of a goblin, ie - make it impossible for the goblin to use it hit the party. The goblin was within line of sight and close enough that I figured ok it'd work... but he would need to continue making concentration checks for the sustained effort, if he chose to continue controlling it. Is that about what you would do or is there another way or actual rules for use in such a situation?

I should note the goblin, quite rightly, decided to drop the bow and charge into melee range.

Anyway, feedback is appreciated, I'm still figuring this all out =)

The goblin's shortbow is attended, so is ineligible as a target.

Target: one non-magical, unattended object weighing up to 5 lbs.

No. Kudos for thinking outside the box by the player, but no. The keyword is "unattended". At low levels there aren't a lot of options for that outside of disarm and grapple combat maneuvers. Otherwise an arcane caster should look towards other spells like daze, sleep, and color spray to take out archers.

This is a no. As mentioned, mage hand cannot target attended or magical items.

Never noticed the non-magical restriction before. That's pretty huge. By a certain level, basically everything you own is magical.

Scarab Sages

Well, sounds a lot like this idea. That said, there are an awfully large number of unattended, non-magical rocks and even Cold Iron rocks apparently :)

It is a zero level cantrip after all. That still leaves plenty of possibilities for someone thinking a bit more lateral approach.

Ahhh I didn't get the whole attended thing (obviously) thanks for clearing that up!

Appreciate all the advice!

Liberty's Edge

Remember that cantrips/orisions are supposed to be very limited.

Note that Mage Hand only allows the wizard to levitate and move 5 pounds of material. That is essentially less than Strength 1. The spell also does not allow for any manipulation of the item (for instance, you could not rotate the item).

No, the bow is attended as previously stated. The arrow, on the other hand, as soon as it departs the bow, is not attended and less than 5lbs.

If either the arrow is magical or the bow (which "imparts any enhancements on its ammunition") the trick would fail.

Note: This readied action would work on ONE arrow per round. Not really overpowered (vs deflect arrows available at level 1, bypassed by rapid shot).
