Simple explanation - children are walking piles of disease-ridden flesh.

More fun explanation - my mother-in-law's house has something against my children.

Scarab Sages

We lied to the boy tonight - and it was a rousing success!! We told him the breaded pork chops he was eating were actually chicken nuggets.

HE ASKED FOR SECONDS!!

Scarab Sages

Of course, lying to your child is a basic duty of any parent. Show me a parent who never lies to their child, I'll show you a damned idiot.

Scarab Sages

An early start today, as the boy woke up before 5 am. Mommy dealt with him at first, but when it was clear he wouldn't stay in his room and play quietly, daddy took things in hand.

Scarab Sages

Baby girl was up for a while, but was cranky (and clearly still tired) so mommy got her back to sleep.

Scarab Sages

And we had a surprise visitor in our backyard - a big squirrel (a red squirrel maybe) munching on some of the bird seed from our porch feeder. Charlie was very excited.

Scarab Sages

As I type, I can hear what sounds like an owl somewhere outside. May have to take a peak and see if I can spot it. I've heard it before.

Scarab Sages

I love owls. One of my favorite birds of prey. I think my favorite is the bald eagle (because America is awesome), then owls, then hawks.

Not sure what to do with the weekend - it's a rainy weekend, so extensive outdoor activity is probably out of the question. I've got some grocery shopping to do, but that's about it for major errands to run. I'm going to make some mead, but I'll most likely do that at night.

The weekend would be better if it was snowing. Think about it.

Scarab Sages

I have often thought about it - and always come to the same conclusion. Nothing is ever better with snow. NOTHING.

Or, as I often call it....evil frozen sky water.

Scarab Sages

So, over the Easter weekend, two of my brothers and I started splitting up some of my dad's stuff. There were certain things I asked for:

My father's old railroad jacks (previously belonging to his uncle, before that, who knows....) look kind of like this

My dad's old wood burning tool. I have at least one working tip and holder. The company still makes them, so I will try to contact them about potential replacement parts.

My dad's T-Box 400, which I don't think he ever actually used.

A couple of random tools.

An ice tongs - like the ones they used to deliver blocks of ice with back in the day. We had found them years ago, while fixing up a house my parents had bought in Bay St. Louis, MS.

And, my pride and joy, a duck decoy, hand made by my father's grandfather. I'm going to fix it up (it's head had been blown off years ago) and repaint it.

There will be more, as we go through the rest of it, but this was a good start. A grand way to help me remember my father and (hopefully) use him as an example to be as good of a father to my children as he was to me.

That's cool zombeh. I have been going through a bunch of stuff. Some of it bittersweet, mementos of Ally, my mom, things like that. Some is funny, like pictures from long ago

Scarab Sages

Good morning to one and all. Happy Sunday!!!

Happy Sunday! Positive waves to one and all. It looks as if the cruel reign of winter might finally be crumbling. The croci are up, and only the last few crumbs of the once mighty snowbanks remain

On Friday I went to a new (to me) brew supply store. He opened up several months after I moved here, which is why I hadn't been there before.

Anyway, so I go there just to pick up a new hydrometer, having broke my only one. Ended up buying two (one is a backup).

I also ended up buying the 4th edition of Charlie Papazian's The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. When I originally started brewing (2008), it was only at the third edition (put out in 2003). He put out the 4th edition some time in 2014.

Scarab Sages

Now for coffee.

Scarab Sages

And baby girl.

Time for me to get my Sunday on. Only seven hours until work time. The good news is since it is at the store I loathe I will be doing absolutely nothing but writing and possibly playing on my smartphone. I honestly don't give a damn. I'll be out of that hell hole one way or another by May

Scarab Sages

May is a good month.

Scarab Sages

Ugh. Feel like s+#! today. I think I may have caught what my baby girl had last week - hand foot and mouth disease. I've got some of the symptoms, but at least no visible rash or sores.

Instead of going into work this morning, I called my boss and told him I was going to at least be late. There's an urgent care nearby that opens up at 0900. I'll let them test me.

Thing is, with this, adults apparently have to be real careful. It has been known to put people in the hospital. Not sure if it gets that bad with kids. Baby girl didn't.

Scarab Sages

Of course, the slight hung over-ness doesn't help.

?!?!?! What the hell?

Be careful man. Please.

Scarab Sages

Ugh. Confirmed by doctor yesterday morning. Still, I wasn't feeling too bad, and she said I should still be able to go to work. As long as I didn't lick anyone or spit in their food/drink (which, of course, ruined most of my plans for the day). So I went to work.

Most of the day was fine, until around 4 pm, when my fever popped up and I started to get the shakes. But I toughed it out until 5 anyway, because that's how I roll. All manly and s+@& (or stupid/stubborn which can be the same thing).

When I got home, I popped some ibuprofen and slept for two hours. Then I woke up, ate some rice, rested and puddles around the house, and was back asleep by 10 pm.

Woke up around 5:30 am, got showered with the idea of going back to work, then realized that wasn't going to happen and went back to sleep until about 20 minutes ago.

That's how I know I'm well and truly sick - a seventeen hour timeframe in which I slept 14-1/2 hours. Stoopid sickness.

Scarab Sages

And I've gotten plenty of mileage out of that "lick anyone" bit.

Scarab Sages

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to eat some icecream and rest on the sofa.

giving your boss a hanna-Barbara style SLLLLLLUUUUURRRRRRRPPPP! would be an awesome way to quit your job.

Scarab Sages

Except I don't want to quit. I like it here. I'd like to retire from this place many years from now.

Scarab Sages

Also - feeling much better today. Haven't had any fever since yesterday. Still hard to eat, but I can work around that. Still feeling run-down as well.

Back at work and playing catch up. Trying to take it easy, though.

Positive waves!

It began as nothing more than a fever, but quickly escalated into a zombie apocalypse taking over the greater houston area

My thanks to you, former Paizocon Roomie! Good times, man. Good times.

But, good Lord, did I have trouble getting to sleep last night. Spent about an 1-1/2 hours just laying there. When I finally did fall asleep, I kept waking up periodically until about 2 am.

That was when I decided to go get this old bed spread I keep on the sofa for when I'm watching TV (one of my wackier idiosyncrasies). I think the new sheets we have on the bed (linen) were giving me trouble. The texture feels weird and makes them noisy. Plus, I think the sheet and blanket are both too damn small.

So, I wrapped myself in my sofa sheet, and was out like a light for the rest of the night. Weird.

you're going to have to wash the new sheet with a lot of fabric softener until it is the right consistency for you.

OR.....I can kill it. With fire!

Scarab Sages

Short work day. Thank the gods. I'm f*+#ing tired of this week and want it to end. Preferably in booze and nekkid shenanigans with a certain Mrs. Zombie (I'll just let that image sink into your nightmares). But, there is still lingering sickness to take into consideration.

Scarab Sages

There might still be booze, however, since I plan to start the mead I didn't start on Monday (thank you, stoopid sickness).

Scarab Sages

Watching The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with my boy. He likes it.

Scarab Sages

I also got skull to the face this morning from Baby Girl. And plenty of cuddles.

Scarab Sages

The boy woke up earlier than we'd have liked him to this morning, so his mother told him to play quietly in his room.

A little while later, he's making a bit too much noise, so I go up to check - he had pooped and was waiting for one of us to come help him clean up.

Thank the gods I checked.

Scarab Sages

It's a bright, sun-shiny day outside. After mroe than a week of lots of clouds and rain, I can do with one predominantly sunny day.

Scarab Sages

I plan on smoking a pork loin today. It has been too long.

Scarab Sages

Later tonight, I shall either make preparations for brewing up a batch of mead, or just go ahead and do it. It's a week later than I wanted to start it, but better late than never.

Scarab Sages

Watched the trailer for Star Wars: Rebels, season two. Looks like they're getting James Earl Jones to repise the Darth Vader voice again.

Scarab Sages

You know it's going to be a weird day when you're walking through the house and have to stop to think "Where the f+%% did this poop on the floor come from?"

Scarab Sages

Got a Garlic and Tony C's seasoned pork loin in the smoker. Using some pecan wood. Should be yummy.

Nice! You should post some photos on FB

Scarab Sages

Oops...too late. It's (mostly) all gone. Three slices left in the fridge, plus some other slices cut up and divided between the wife and I for lunch tomorrow.

If it makes a difference, it was delicious. I think the pecan wood gave it a really nice flavor.

Scarab Sages

I love pecan wood. Back in the halcyon days of my youth, in the early years of our summer home in Bay St. Louis, there was a pecan tree shading the entire backyard. Sadly, it was knocked over in a hurricane, but it yielded many pounds of pecan wood logs, which we sold as fire wood.

Scarab Sages

One of my favorite beers, which I've only ever been able to get once, is Wrath of Pecant, by Dogfish Head. They smoke the grains over pecan wood. An excellent beer.

I picked up several bottles of that a few years back, when some buddies and I drove from Philly to Rehobeth Beach, Delaware to do the Dogfish Head tour (brewery is actually in Milton).
