It was a good weekend for college football. Some fun games to watch.

Otherwise...F%!! YOU, UNIVERSE! YOU SUCK BIG, HAIRY GOAT BALLS.

Stoopid stomach bug.

Cub Scout Adventure Day for the Phoenix District! Very hot, but successful. Someone said we had upwards of 300 scouts. Many got to shoot off the model rockets they were given when they first signed up for scouting.

I ran a table as part of the Scout STEM-NOVA program, of which I am a counselor. My table was all about careers in space exploration. I even had a prop - an actual schematic of an S-1C Saturn Booster rocket. This was the first stage of the Saturn V rockets that carried our Apollow astronauts into space.

I'm debating whether to continue being a shiftless layabout, or start a campaign to end the scourge of junk mail.

Re-reading the Dragonlance Chronicles for the first time in a long time, and now I realize I do, in some ways, miss gaming.

Just another reminder of the things I've lost in the last few years. Another thing to remind me that maybe the move to Texas was....ill thought.

Apparently, there is an aggravated assault suspect barricaded in his home, just around the corner. The police have had something of a lock-down in my neighborhood for the past few hours.

Thanksgiving was...okay. Some decent food. It's always nice to visit my mother. The kids love visiting with her, and with my in-laws. The boy and I saw the new John Cene movie Playing with Fire. The less said about that, the better.

The highlight of the week was seeing to of my old Fraternity Brothers. One of them, Matt, was always a friend and brother, but I was never very close to him. The other, John, is one of my oldest friends. We've known each other for over 40 years. He now owns a Pizza buffet place in Picayune, MS. We met at his restaraunt.

It was nice to have friends again. Even if only for a few hours.

Finally watched the 3D Clone Wars animated movie the other night. It entertained me enough that I'll likely go back and watch the series that followed it.

Scarab Sages

And, since I've been watching that animated show, I decided over the weekend to re-watch the prequel trilogy for the first time in years.

While I still think there was plenty wrong with them, time has allowed me to see they also have plenty right. I think a large part of that was Lucas and his singular vision of what he wanted.

Yet another miserable holiday season for me, health-wise. I wonder how hard it would be to get everyone to accept Christmas in July.....

Scarab Sages

Then again....

The way my health has been going, I don't think a change to a different month would do me much good anyway.

Scarab Sages

Weather-wise, we had a beautiful last few days here in Houston.

Christmas Day was nice, and I got some great books: Lore of Love for the old Time Life Books Enchanted World Series, Volumes 3, 4 & 5 of the Collected Fantasies of Clark Ashton Smith, and a biography of C.S. Lewis. Of all those, the biography was the most unexpected and unwelcome. Unxpected because I was unaware of its existence and hadn't asked for it. Unwelcome because I'm not really a big fan of biographies.

I took advantage of today's good weather to get outside and trim a tree out front, as well as watch over my daughter and help her out riding her bike.

Excited to hear that LSU kicked the s%@# out of Oklahoma to advance to the College Football National Championship. Sadly, I never actually can watch the LSU games, as doing so would cause the universe to turn against the team and make them lose, just to spite me.

We have a dog now.

I've always been a dog person, but refrained from pushing to get one for various reasons, not the least of which was the simple fact my wife has never been a dog person.

So, within the last few months, the wife started talking about getting a dog, Within the last few weeks, she became unusually excited about the idea. Then, just the other day, she mentioned that someone from her kick boxing class had a litter of German Shepherd pupies.

So now we have seven week old Lily.

On another note, since about mid-October there have been a total of about five, maybe 6 days, that I was not ill in some way. The most recent visit to the urgent care (today) was for a sinus infection.

Between that, and coming to grips with my dead career, this holiday season has been rough.

Here’s to Lily becoming a great companion. I missed out on my Aussie’s growing pains thanks to deployments and get to reap the rewards of my wife’s hard work.

Scarab Sages

Well, sleep, it was nice knowing you.

Scarab Sages

Hello coffee, my old friend
I've come to drink you again
Because a puppy loudly screeching
Kept waking me while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the loss of silence

Our puppy got ahold of one of my baby girl's old socks yesterday. Before we could get it from her, she swallowed it whole.

One trip to the vet's office, and two shots later, she had vomited it up.

Tonight and tommorrow are (respectively) the Pinewood Derby Registration and Race Day for my son's Cub Scout pack. They actually put me in charge of the whole thing. This put me in mind of an old Obi Wan quote....

....Who's the more foolish? The fool, or the fool who follows him?

Scarab Sages

Apparently, the legendary Tanya Tucker won two Grammy awards last night. So that gives me some slight hope for the future of humanity.

Scarab Sages

The boy and I are supposed to go down to Corpus Cristi this weekend with the Scouts, for an overnight stay on the USS LEXINGTON, a WWII era aircraft carrier turned museum. Hopefully, my health issues won't prevent our going.

Scarab Sages

Well, my mystery illness ruined the weekend plans the boy and I had.

Silver lining, however, is that this will potentially be the last time. Got a call from my primary on Friday to make an appointment about discussing the results of my bloodwork. It seems they have pinpointed at least one of my problems.

So, today I have an appointment to discuss those results (and what to do about them).

Scarab Sages

Then, in a couple of weeks, I go back to the cardiologist for some tests.

Sheesh medical issues are the worst, when you dont know what it is!

Good luck and Godspeed back to full (good) health!

When I left my job with the Navy (almost 7 years ago), I left behind a bunch of surprises. Specifically, I printed out a bunch of pictures of my face, then stuck each picture in a random location (desk drawers, cabinents, file folders, etc).

They just found another one today.

I was glad to see the Sonic the Hedgehog movie had a good opening weekend, even though I have no desire to go see it. I can still recall my old fraternity brother playing the Sonic game on his Sega Genesis.

Apparently, Disney is going to continue the most recent set of Planet of the Apes movies. HUZZAH!!!

So, according to the cardiologist, not only do I have a heart, but it appears to be working just fine.

Just five business days to go before we fly over to Florida for our Disney vacation. I'm excited. The boy and I are scheduled to build lightsabers and robots.

Not to mention, with us in Florida, and the dog in a boarding facility, I just might manage to get my first uninterrupted nights of sleep since before New Year's Eve.

Scarab Sages

It’s days like today I regret ever moving to Texas and taking that job with my former employer. If I hadn’t, my career my still be alive.

I should have known not to complain about how boring things were. The universe seems to have taken it as a challenge to see how much more boring it could go.

Scarab Sages

Someone suggested to me that the no school time would be a great opportunity to introduce my kids to role playing games.

No thanks. I don't want my kids to be a part of that, or geek culture in general.

Scarab Sages

On the plus side, the dog is happy to have all her humans home.

Scarab Sages

Had to get outside and do a little garden work yesterday. There were weeds starting to get out of hand, and several bushes needed trimming. Sadly, the lawn itself is also getting out of hand, but my lawn guy is down and out at the moment with a bad back.

I may have to find someone to temporarily replace him. Especially if the HOA decides to renew their typically douchebag behavior and send me an angry letter about the state of my grass.

Scarab Sages

The grocery store opens at 8 am, and I'm thinking I might try to be there before then. Last weekend, I got their around 8:30-ish and had to wait in line. It moved quick, at least.

I'm just hoping they have some paper towels this week. We're down to our last roll.

Stoopid panic buyers.

Huh! You mean some poor slob actually wasted time reading my crap so they could play tattletale?!?

I feel so loved.

I guess from now on I should just call it "The Disease Which Shall Not Be Named". At least around here.

In other news, our school district's remote learning is moving along pretty well, all things considered. The middle and high schools had it easier, since many of their students already had laptops and were assigned work via computer. I've been slightly impressed at how quickly they got it going for the elementary kids.

Scarab Sages

Of course, my kids think their new teacher is an a!~&+@$.

Scarab Sages

I'm inclined to agree with them.

In other, other news, I found the old Dark Shadows TV show available on Amazon. They separated out the original 200-ish episodes under the listing title "The Beginning" (or something like that), while picking up with the main series starting where Barnabas is freed from his coffin.

So that's been something to divert my attention.

Scarab Sages

I also bought the entire single season run of Green Lantern: The Animated Series, season one of Batman Beyond, and the Kurt Russell move Soldier. All from Amazon.

So, yay! More stuff to keep myself occupied.

Scarab Sages

I saw an article today talking about some big natural gas company filing for bancruptcy. The entire oil and gas sector has been hit hard by SOME RECENT EVENTS.

It got me thinking of at least one former employer of mine, and I can't help but hope they go under from all this. Probably makes me a bad person, but f**+ those a#@!%@%s.

Scarab Sages

I know there's a lot of other businesses out there who are having a tough time these days. Sucks to be them. In the old days, I might have felt more sympathy, but not so much these days.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of my children....

The fur baby is most likely over 30 pounds by now. Right before we left for Disney, at the beginnng of March, she was 29 pounds at the vet. So I figure she's got to be closer to 35 or 40 pounds by now.

That's a far cry from the 7-ish pounds she weighed when we brought her home on 1 January. I told the wife and kids she was going to get big. They might finally believe me.
