Scarab Sages

I think the wife has joined me in getting tired of pizza for dinner every Friday.

Scarab Sages

I'm hoping my grocery store will have a decent sized pork butt available this weekend. For some strange reason, various items have been somewhat scarce the last few weeks.

Oh yeah, I remember why....idiots.

Scarab Sages

Did my census the other day. That was....far more boring than I expected.

Scarab Sages

In some other good news, I finally found some use for all my old gaming dice. I've been using them as teaching aids for my kids' school lessons.

Some of them, anyway. There's at least one bag which has proven most stubborn about being located.

Scarab Sages

The wife used our air fryer thing to make some burgers for dinner the other night. It made me realize how much I've largely cut beef from my diet.

I might go back to it on a more regular basis, though. Those were pretty decent burgers

Scarab Sages

IT is staring at me. Probably wants to go outside and sniff a few thousand blades of grass.

Scarab Sages

Back to the pork butt....

The reason I'm hoping to pick one up is because we're out of red beans and rice.

Every couple of weeks, I smoke a pork butt and some bacon. Most of the pork butt goes towards pulled pork. A small percentage of it, and all the bacon, will be added to my next batch of red beans. I usually make enough to have dinner and one lunch, plus fill up three more quart bags to go in the freezer.

Scarab Sages

Not to mention, the pork butt gives us pulled pork meals for several days.

Scarab Sages

And I love saying/writing "pork butt". It's funny, at least to my kids.

Scarab Sages

Ye gods! There are times when I f&+%ing hate April (the month). The weather is all over the place - hot, cold, wet, dry, overcast, sunny. Sometimes all in the space of a few hours.

Stoopid Mother Nature.

Scarab Sages

The fur baby decided to play "Let's F~@% with Daddy's Mind" again. She woke me up at 0420 this morning to go pee. So I took her out. She peed, then turned right around and headed back for the door.

After putting her back in her kennel, I got back in bed. My head had barely touched the pillow when the little fur turd started whining again. So I took her back outside, and this time she took a s+%@.

ARRRGGGHHHH!!!

Maybe I should have gotten a male instead. He might have been more sensible.

Scarab Sages

Yesterday, I ventured out into the wasteland in search of sustenance. Not for any of the humans in the house, mind you. For the fur baby.

We feed her Royal Canin German Shepard Puppy Food. It was one of the brands out veterinarian recommended. Oddly enough, they only sell it in 30 pound bags. The adult German Shepard, from the same brand, is sold in BOTH 17 and 30 pound bags.

Scarab Sages

And, of course, my wife (goofball that she is) bought a dog food container that only holds 28 pounds.

Note to self - next time, order it yourself, so it gets done properly.

Scarab Sages

Thinking back on my yesterday posts, where I mentioned Dark Shadows. I recall originally discovering that show when I was around 20 or so. It showed up on the now defunct Sci-Fi Channel.

I say the channel is "defunct", because what it's become today is a far cry from it's original form. These days, the SyFy channel is a crap network, supported by an even crappier news website. How the mighty have fallen.

Scarab Sages

Its a good example of one of those things that makes me ashamed of geek culture.

Scarab Sages

In just about an hour or so, I'll be heading out to the grocery store for my usual shopping day. They don't open until 0800, but I have to get there a bit early so I'm not waiting in line too long.

Stoopid pandemic with a mystery origin.

Scarab Sages

I'm guessing they'll still have the deli section closed. Which means I'll have to sort through the pre-packaged lunch meat. That wouldn't be so bad, except it's usually only about a half-pound or so of lunch meat. That lasts about a day and a half around my house.

Scarab Sages

In other news, I think some of the Amazon delivery people have levels in Ninja. Seriously, sometime last night, one of them put a package right by our front door, and the dog didn't so much as perk her fuzzy little ears up.

I mean, this is a dog who can hear the boy getting out of his bed, in his bedroom, upstairs in the corner of the house. Last night, she was laying RIGHT NEXT TO THE FRONT DOOR, and didn't hear this.

What the f$$~?!?

Scarab Sages

So...my conclusion...Amazon Delivery Ninjas.

Scarab Sages

I heard that Andy Weir is finally putting out a new book. Here's hoping it'll be as good as his first one. Apparently, the new one is already optioned for a movie starring Ryan Gosling.

Scarab Sages

The movie The Martian was nearly as good as the book. Its two major flaws were (a) the neglect of Watney's background in Mechanical Engineering, focusing solely on his Botany speciality, and (b) the overemphasis on the character of Commander Lewis, which necessarily meant neglecting other characters and the excellent actors who portrayed them.

The book The Martian is ten tons of awesome in a 2 ton bag. Much like Ready Player One.

Scarab Sages

Back when I was still an engineer myself, The Martian was far more of an inspiration. Still a damn good book, though.

Scarab Sages

The one thing from The Martian (both book and movie) that I found most unbelievable, was the assistance provided by the other country to NASA. I sincerely doubt something like that would ever actually happen.

Scarab Sages

Scratch that.

There are two things I find most unbelievable. The second is the idea that NASA could actually put even one mission like that together.

Scarab Sages

Now I'm debating on whether to get a third cup of coffee or not. I didn't go to bed until almost 11 pm, and was up with my alarm at 0515. With a pee/poop break for the dog disrupting the time between.

Scarab Sages

Stoopid no new comics - cuts down on the amount of material I have to post about. So now I have to delve deeper into my old skill of randomly pulling s%#+ out of my ass to talk about.

Scarab Sages

I see the new Pixar movie Onward has dropped on Disney+. That was a quick turnaround. Wondering if that will become the new normal, especially if a movie is underperforming at the box office.

Scarab Sages

That is, assuming the (very) over-priced box office doesn't die the death it so richly deserves.

Scarab Sages

With the recent media-driven morons committing multiple acts of panic buying, the shortage of TP got me remembering my introduction to the bidet. That's one of those things I miss about working in Japan.

Hopefully, that kind of thing will start becoming more popular here in the states, so the price can come down.

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! The grocery store had a nice selection of pork butts! Now I can smoke one tomorrow. Along with some maple bacon for the red beans.

Mmmmm...maple bacon.

Scarab Sages

Oddly enough, they were still sold out of Tomato Puree and yellow box spaghetti.

It's weird, what stupid people will panic buy.

Scarab Sages

I am amazed, however, but how quickly our local grocery stores have adapted in the face of this pandemic of mysterious origins.

They've got signs all over the floor about social distancing (nice professional looking ones), and now they've got plastic shielding installed on all the check out lines.

Scarab Sages

Of course, when I arrived back home, the fur baby got excited and peed on the floor.

Twice.

Scarab Sages

All these posts are a good example of how bored I am. Which is pretty much the one of the few reasons I still post on these boards.

Scarab Sages

Plus, for s@&#s and giggles, I double checked my post count. I'm getting close to 60,000 posts.

Scarab Sages

It'll still probably take me a few months to get there.

Scarab Sages

In the midst of all this hoopla, we received word from our MUD that recycling won't be collected for the foreseeable future.

Scarab Sages

Mmmmm....smoked pork butt.

Not yet, of course. I haven't even put it in the smoker yet. Even then, it's got to cook for about 8 hours.

Scarab Sages

My old grass guy hurt his back really bad, and I don't know if he's ever going to be able take care of my lawn again. So I had to find some other folks to do it. Thank the gods for Google search.

Scarab Sages

Just another half hour or so, and the smoked pork butt will be ready. Mmmmmm......

Scarab Sages

Oh, look! It’s one of those days when I just want to say “F&*% the world!” Let it all f%~!ing burn.”

Scarab Sages

F!##ing universe. Way to kick a family while they’re down.

Scarab Sages

And why didn’t anyone tell me it would have been okay to be day drinking these past few years?!?

Scarab Sages

On the plus side, I did just have some soft batch chocolate chip cookies for a morning snack.

And we’re having freshly prepared red beans and rice for dinner.

Scarab Sages

So the universe can put off burning until tomorrow.

Scarab Sages

To continue the theme of "I must have pissed off the Universe"...

The dog has her second UTI. She's not even five months old yet. The vet is hoping it's just a puppy thing, and not something she'll be prone to all her life.

Also, her being not quite 5 months old, AND already over 50 lbs, does not bode well for my dog food budget going forward.

Scarab Sages

And my clothes dryer is acting up again.

Scarab Sages

There have been questions floating around as to the long-term effect the current Crisis that Shall Not be Named will have on various hobbies and social practices. I find these discussions interesting, so I'll touch on some that might directly affect me....

Comic Books - being a long time comic book collector (30+ years), it would sadden me to see the industry go the way of the dodo. I think I'd get over it pretty quickly though.

Pen and Paper Role Playing Games - where once the death of this industry might have put a big hurt on my social life, that is no longer the case. I stopped playing with a group years ago. And, to be honest, I've been somewhat disappointed with the turn the industry has taken over the years, which is why I prefer my kids as far from geek culture as is humanly possible. If pen and paper RPGs were to die a horrible death tomorrow, I would no more weep for them than I would for the death of red wasp (AKA flying sting a#~#&$+s).

Hand Shakes - I've seen speculation that this would go the way of the dodo moving forward. That would sadden me deeply. Such a gesture has, for me, always been an expression of good-will, friendship, trust, and agreement. To lose that would be depressing.

Hugs, of course, would be right out. That wouldn't affect me as much. Other than family, the only people I might have regularly hugged were close, personal friends. Until I realized I don't really have any of those.

Movie theaters - good bye to that over-priced nonsense. The faster they die out, the better for all. Long live streaming!!! And if this destroyed the careers of some narcissistic, douchebag celebrities in the process, so much the better.

Professional sports - not my circus, not my monkeys. It might be a bit sad, but if it did away with soccer, I'd say the scales of cosmic justice would be balanced.

Scarab Sages

Further thought on TV/movies in general....

Maybe the new paradigm of social distancing will do away with live shows/movies altogther. Then it can be all animation all the time. Voice actors would become like unto demi-gods for a society hungry for it's next golden calf. We could very well see the great Frank Welker elected President for Life of the entire f%*#ing planet. And his inauguration speech could be done in the voice of Megatron.

That might be worth it.

Scarab Sages

Did I mention that I dropped my glasses and now each lens has some scratch marks to annoy my vision?

One more way in which the universe continues to vex me.
