I do have a phone conference scheduled for later this afternoon. It's a firm up north, but I think they're more like head hunters. They had something advertised on one of the several job sites I frequent, so my resume ended up with them.
With luck, they'll have something for me that's wouldn't present a s+@+ty commute.
If they suggest anything that would require me moving, that's just a no-go.

I'm actually thinking of the federal system for employment. One of my professors brought it up, and it actually makes a lot of sense. They are geared to veterans, they are used to hiring older folks starting second careers, and they have a pretty decent system. I found a perfect job on USAJobs... In Portland, OR. :/

Cool! Except, of course, for the Oregon part. Unless you're into that sort of thing.
Government service can be ok. Good benefits. Decent pay (at least where I was). Flexible scheduling. We got a lot of annual cost of living increases (except when there were budget issues).
And it's nearly impossible to lose the job once you get it. Seriously, you have to screw up big time - like violence, pervy sex s!!@, maybe drug use. I knew a dude who defrauded the government twice (second time to the tune of about $30K), and he just got slaps on the wrist.
Main reason the wife and I left was because we had kind of plateaued out advancement wise, and with budget cuts we knew overall future advancements would be few and far between. One dude I worked with got his promotion by accepting a job in Japan. That and there was talk at the time of moving my wife's duties to another location.
And we wanted to get out of the cesspool that is Philthadelphia.
And F*@& WINTER.

The job I am looking at is structured to give a recent paralegal grad a grounding in experience to further themselves in the GS field. I'd start off as a GS7 with a pathway up to the 9-10 level. That's really all I would need. Plus I have 5 years military that could be added to the retirement. And, I have no real ties to this place.

As I recall, when I first started my government employment, it was at the GS-7 level. Normally, folks would start at GS-5, but I was so f#&%ing awesome they bumped me up a pay grade.
By the time I left, I was a GS-13 with pretty much no faith in ever getting to GS-14. My wife was in much the same position, except that the post she had held for the previous few years had traditionally been a GS-14 position.

My mother arrives tomorrow for a week (and change) long visit. Part of the reason she's coming now is my niece (and God Child) is about to make her First Communion this Saturday, and she and her sister are having a dance recital the next day.
So, Granny will spend at least this weekend at my house (since my brother's mother in law is staying at his house). Should be fun. My kids are excited.

So I closed off all the big holes where I know the critter can use to get in/out of my yard. In addition, I used a several of the f%@* load of leftover bricks to plug even smaller gaps where the little s**+ might be tempted to dig a new passage.
If he does, in fact, decide to dig a new hole, thus showcasing his persistence in attacking my yard, welll....then I'll show him what persistence really is.

Talking to my brother - It seems there is an effort to bring the current mayor (and all-around douchebag) of New Orleans (my hometown) up on federal charges. Apparently, one of those old statues he had removed was on the federal register of protected historical landmarks.
While I'm indifferent to the removal of the statues (since I no longer live there), I still would love to see that a&~!!+@ go to prison.
I do have doubts as to the veracity of all this, because it seems he would have at least been smart enough to check on something like that before ordering the statue removed. Still, one can have hope.....

Whilst out running some errands today, my mom decided to spend time with my sister-in-law and niece. Later they called me to let me know they were going to Five Guys for lunch, so I met them there.
After lunch, I stopped at the comic book store. On a whim, I did some checking in their back issue section and scored three issues of Sandman I didn't have yet.
WOOT!!!!!

I happened to glance out in the back yard earlier this evening, and there was a turtle in the grass, just off the patio. His shell was probably a good 5 or 6 inches long, at least.
I found a little plastic container to put him in, then the boy and I took a walk down to the subdivision lake area and put him in the shade, on some rocks next to the water.
