Dragon Disciple and Allignments

Rules Questions

Hi there!

So I'm a little bugged about the Dragon Disciple allignment. Here's the text about it:

Quote:
Alignment: Dragon disciples can be of any alignment, although they tend to be more chaotic than lawful. Those dragon disciples that assume the traits of chromatic dragons, such as bestial white and fearsome red dragons, have a proclivity for evil. Conversely, those that take after the metallic dragons, such as stoic brass and chivalric gold dragons, are often of good alignments.

So I can be of any allignment but if I for example am a Chromatic red Dragon, then I would have a tendency to be evil. If I have a tendency to be evil, then shouldn't I be evil?

For example my character is chaotic good and I chose the red dragon. Would this automatically make me chaotic evil? If it does change my allignment but becoming evil from good isn't really normal, then how about chaotic neutral?

Basically, I'm chaotic good, I chose red dragon which would give me a tendency for evil. What am I?

Thanks :)

That basically just flavor text you can be any alignment you want which any of the dragon types. If you're Chaotic Good you're Chaotic Good; your alignment is what you play it as.

Short Answer:You are Chaotic Good, unless you as a player want to change your alignment.

Long Answer:You are CG, and since Dragon Disciples can be of any alignment, as it says in the alignment section you quoted, you are not in any way required to change. You might consider changing your character slightly to show this change, as some GMs might expect it[I know a few], but you are not required to. Personally, I'd RP as this: You are CG, but you occasionally sway over to CN or CE as your draconic blood is influencing you. So while ultimately you still have good goals and do good deeds, occasionally you take non-good actions to accomplish said goals or perform said deeds. But ultimately, you don't have to change anything about your character's alignment or RP.

I don't think you are reading that right.

It is saying Dragon Disciples as a whole tend more toward chaotic alignments.

Similarly, chromatic Dragon Disciples as a whole tend toward evil.

Nothing in the section applies specifically to your character, but rather is a generalization of all Dragon Disciples.

Its just like if a sentence said "Elves tend to be chaotic good." It is a generalization. Your elf PC can be any alignment, and his personal actions don't have to tend toward chaos or good.

What Samasboy1 said. You're reading too much into flavor text. It specifically says there 'can be of any alignment'.

It refers to the tendency of most who carry the bloodline of evil dragons.. you are NOT required as an INDIVIDUAL to follow the herd. Conversely you could have the blood line of a gold dragon, and have a heart as deeply dark as the abyss.

Flavor text tends to generalize a bit - basically the draconic influence may tug at you sometimes, but you are still you. Personally, I interpret this to mean that the majority or at least a sizable minority of NPC dragon disciples are of their progenitors' alignment or close to it - i.e. in a game a red dragon disciple would probably be NE, CE or CN unless there is a particular reason for her not to be (as in, as a DM I think it would be cool, prove a point etc).

It's a bit like with tieflings and aasimars - most of them tend to evil or good respectively, but not all of them have to follow the alignment of their outsider forefather, and some expressly go against it.

PCs can feel those urges at times as way to RP, but don't have to accept them or base their behavior on them. Perhaps you have an odd fascination with violence and death by fire - you know they are wrong, and it is shameful and disturbing, but some part of you enjoys it. You can embrace it, try to ignore it, or even go out of your way to fight it to prove (to others and yourself) you are your own person and not a mindless slave to a gene implanted in you generations ago.

I concur with the other posters that nothing in the description forces an alignment onto your PC. If your PC goes around loudly and constantly telling everyone he/she is a Red Dragon Disciple, then you should probably expect most people to assume that he/she is CE.

Your dragon blood type is genetics basically not an in character choice (well unless you yourself decide instead of it just awaking in you, you actively go try to finda dragon to empower you. Otherwise it wasn't your choice for your ancestor to make a pact or get busy with a dragon. I suppose it might inspire you a little but it isn't an overriding

Liberty's Edge

You could even play a paladin/sorcerer/DD with the red dragon bloodline.

Alright then :)

Thanks everyone!
