I'm only aware that we have officially announced to go to V as first choice. Other alliances didn't tell me where they wanted to go.

There have been rumours that Aragon was going for V - but these came from non Aragon ambassadors. An e-mail to Bludd asking what it would mean to have Aragon as neighbours was never answered. And with Aragon becoming a member of the Northern Alliance? I wasn't sure how this would fit with a settlement in V.
I won't know until later - unless someone from Aragon tells me you went for V. In this case it will be one of our lower choices.

Seems Freevale has chosen V as first choice. I can tell you that you definately shouldn't be in V as we should have more members. But W is our 6th choice.

I think V will probably be one of the most heated races among the landrush simply due to it's proximity to the superdungeon.

The question being whether whoever gets it will then be able to hold on to it until the superdungeon is actually built... some time after open enrollment in 2016.

There are pros and cons for the place.

The superdungeon will take a while to fully open. Just read the article from Lisa and she hopes level 1 will be accessible soon - because this is mainly populated with goblins.

Expansion is very limited. The proximity to the Emerald Spire and several monster hexes nearby as well as settlement hexes in every direction severely restrict long term growth (without war)

Is it the ideal raiding settlement? I'm undecided on this one. It would bring in a stream of characters who want to visit the dungeon. At the same time players might start to complain about griefing if the main dungeon in the game is off limits for all the weaker players who prefer PvE instead of PvP due to a strong raiding guild there.
There is also the question if the larger alliances would tolerate to be cut off from the Emerald Spire or if a raider in this place would risk long term razing.

As such it seems to me it would appeal most to medium or small sized guilds - with raiders being the wildcard that I just don't know (yet).

Hah, when you say raider, one who repeatedly tackles dungeon content is not what comes to mind. Rather, something more like a Viking, doing Viking things to other settlements. Or players huddled around the dungeon. ;)

FINALLY we may actually have an MMO that knows the true meaning of what raiding is. I have been waiting for over a decade for true raiding (as you say, Viking style).

All we hope for now is the PFO will have true smuggling as well. That profession has also not been treated properly, particularly in any of the Star Wars based MMOs.

Well, people could unthinkingly assume that laws in the real world are somehow relevant to the game world, but really, why should they be?

If there were performance-enhancing 'substances', the leaders of a settlement would want their people using them as buffs. People aren't going to regularly spend coin on something which impairs them, so they won't be going broke and turning to crime, and there won't be an illicit market for stuff like that.

Settlements aren't going to ban weapons either. Flagging and rep systems will cover investigative work and let you know who is trying to fight in the streets, and you want your members to be armed in case of attack.

What else are you going to smuggle? Some people may have a problem with the sale of stolen property, but Ryan has said the market will anonymize things. There's no need for a fence in a shady pawn shop when the regular market doesn't care whether you crafted an item or killed for it. People can create their own market mules to bypass rep & alignment restrictions. Heck, the ability to create infinite disposable characters makes smuggling trivial all by itself, even if there were banned items.

You are touching on one of the big ? there.

I feel that GW will try to steer away from the infinite disposable character approach. I agree it is a tricky balance since they do want to have a low hurdle for people that want to try out the game or other characters.

There will be Alts off course, but I think there can be a cutoff point somewhere where creating an alt is still a meaningful decision(probably as in, will cost you something in some way) and not a FFA unlimited feature.

Just to be clear, I removed as many obstacles that I could in my level to make it easier to implement somewhere down the line, but the main obstacles in creating the Emerald Spire are creating the art assets in general. The size of this dungeon is immense. It isn't called a superdungeon for nothing. I could see it never being fully realized. It could stand on its own as its own video game it is that huge. The diversity of foes and dungeon design is mind boggling!

Somewhere down the line, the PFO community will ask us to prioritize creating the art assets and doing the programming to add dungeons. Where that falls in relation to settlement building, caravan making, riding horseback, boats and ships, formation combat, etc. will end up being mainly driven by the community. If the community puts making dungeons at the end of the queue, then it could be a while before we see much of anything at the Emerald Spire location.

Now, if PFO takes off like a rocket and Goblinworks is able to hire a bunch more people, then I could see an environmental artist who does nothing but dungeons. But we are a long ways off from that right now.

Just want to set expectations properly. Don't want folks fighting over a settlement location because they think they will have easy access to a dungeon that may not exist for many years.

Thank you for the response Lisa. I think your post will be quoted in days to come in regard to how feature development will be handled, and truly hope that Crowdforging becomes as essential and "ground-floor" to the culture of PFO as it seems to be to the development and managerial staff such as yourself.

Perhaps the first thing we should crowdforge is how crowdforging works, as it hasn't exactly been spelled out yet. Now that's an inception waiting to happen.

I really, really hope that GW can take a page from InExile and look to the community to help with art assets. I am sure there are a number of us who would be more than happy to help contribute in one way or another. I don't recall the specifics but I had thought I read this was reasonablly succesful for them.

I sure hope players will rather choose a cool dungeon like Emerald Spire then Boats.......but I could be hurting people's feelings here. :)

I would put Caravans before the dungeon, but horse-riding (exept scripted fast travel ponyrides)after the dungeon.

I realize it is huge amount of work, but the groundwork and ideas are there already. Hopefully this game takes off big time so GW can hire a few more artists. :)

Bastardhall, that sounds interesting. Is there any mention in the Guide to the River Kingdoms about it?

No, the river is the border with Ustalav. Best source for info on Bastardhall is 'Rule of Fear'... or the search box on this site. Or just think 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow + Ravenloft + Castle Greyhawk'.
