prestidigitation and cold weather.

Rules Questions

One of prestidigitation's stated powers is the ability to warm a pound of non - living material. A blanket is a pound of non - living material.

So, what kind of bonus on saves vs cold weather would a magically warmed blanket give?

None, at least in my opinion. Prestidigitation is not allowed to replicate the effects of other spells.

Finally, prestidigitation lacks the power to duplicate any other spell effects.

And it would be very close to endure elements.

At best, you could get a +1 on saves in my opinion. Since Resistance gives a +1 to all saves. But then, with that as an example Prestidigitation shouldn't be able to do that because it would be replicating the effects of another spell (if slightly more limited).

Ultimately it will be up to how your GM chooses to interpret it.

I'd rule that it makes you more comfortable, but won't actually change your saving throws or anything like that.

It would likely be rather poor I'd imagine. If it is really that cold, you would likely have to continually warm the blanket in order for it to have any effect (I mean, a worn blanket has a fairly large surface area, so it is not like you are dealing with a hot cup of coffee here). So you would mostly just be stuck in one spot warming a blanket.

So at best, I'd imagine that it could stave off the cold while you focused on it, but as soon as you tried doing...well anything adventuring requires or even sleeping, you would be out of luck.

Actually, a standard blanket is THREE pounds of non-living material. :>

I was originally going to go with a hot water bottle of some description but when I checked ultimate equipment guide under 'blanket' it said 1 pound. Could be a misprint.

My PDF copy of Ultimate Equipment says 3 lbs., as does my 1st Printing Core Rulebook, and my current PDF Core Rulebook.

Absolutely none if that's the only thing you've got going for you. Prestidigitation is not going to equal the Endure Elements spell.

Interesting...

I reward ingenuity. In my game I'd throw you a +2 on your Survival roll to in turn potentially add a bonus to your Fort save. Another leniency in my game: Prestidigitation lasts for an hour and allows multiple "tricks" in that time; I'd be nice enough for you to warm up your whole crew.

Be nice to your players when they think outside the box; it just might save your campaign some day :)

I'd allow it to keep a person as warm as a warm blanket would keep someone in real life under the same circumstances. It isn't like the blanket will stay permanently warm once the caster stops prestidigitating, and you'll need more than a warm blanket to be comfortable in the kind of weather endure elements can protect you from (-45 degrees F).

I agree with blathers. It depends on what they are trying to do.
I would give them the +2 to save if they used the blanket as a real blanket would be used.
They need to be wrapped in it, not moving and in an enclosed space out of the wind where your body heat could keep you reasonably warm (like in a tent or makeshift shelter) and you are using prestdigitation to warm the blanket/area up.

If you are walking around or standing in the wind not so much... For that you would need endure elements for that.

Hoot-hoo! I've been found out!

I'd better get back to cleaning up the museum's bug exhibit! *shiver noises*

Honestly, I doubt that prestidigitation makes things that warm. To get any kind of benefit from the cold, you'd probably need the blankets verging on hot.

warm food (something that the spell seems to be designed around) is still colder then your body temperature. So it would do very little to keep you from freezing to death. If continuously cast (as the warmth would vanish rather quickly) I would rule it counts as you being "protected" basically giving you the bonus that survival would give, and not stacking with that bonus or anything similar. It may not have the power to mimic spells, but skills seem to be on the table still.

Sovereign Court

+2 Circumstance bonus to the save seems fair.

Prestidigitation does NOT duplicate the effects of Endure Elements. EE says you don't even need to make the saving throw. All Pd can do is make the save easier, but since 1 on a save always fails, Pd can't guarantee success.
