Homebrew and House Rules

Lo' there brewers! I am crafting my next world after years of playing in the last. What I beg of you, those willing to share, is your names and ideas. Be they gods, countries, cities, mountain ranges, rivers, armies, or villains let's share what we have and build better worlds!
(( I'm at work till late but will post my own when I'm home))

We are negotiating the game world for our next homebrew game right now. So far we have:

4 gods (LG, LN, LE and N) created a little pocket dimension and stocked it with only one world, nothing else. This world is a hollow sphere, and all folks live on the inner surface, with the sun being at the center of the sphere. The sun is a disk bright on 1 side, dark on the other that rotates once every 24 hours. The gods made this world to be a little chess board to play with the mortals. As such, they wanted to minimize outside influence, and the potential for the locals unbalancing their game world.

We have agreed upon the following:
Planar Lock is permanently on the entire plane. No plane shifts, astral spells or teleports work.

Because of this, no summoning works at all.

Any creatures present that normally have an outsider subtype are instead modified to have the native subtype.

Gun powder does not work in this world.

We won't use any combat maneuvers other than trip.

Divination or other scrying methods from outside the plane will detect a solid, dead planet.

Divination or other scrying from inside the world will detect that the universe ends at the outer edge of their planet, and will not reveal the existence of other planes or dimensions.

Raising dead requires a skill check: D20 + CL + Stat versus DC of 15 + HD + months dead to create the undead unless the creature consents to being raised.

The world was originally stocked with non chaotic races, and any chaotic creatures that are present are small in number.A cataclysm of some kind occurred hundreds of years ago, destroying all high level casters and all known writings concerning magic. The world has civilizations separated by vast regions of frontier/wildlands. Most everyone is either wary of spell casters or outright hostile to them, since they were somehow responsible for the cataclysm.

We will use less than a complete list of races in this world, and less than a complete list or archetypes, but all races and all archetypes that the players want to play will be included in game world design.

We will probably start in a frontier area, weeks travel away from any major city. The town will be small (500 people?), isolated and struggling to get by. The flavor will be like any small town from a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western. Since there is no functioning teleportation magic, the town really is isolated an on its own.
We do not have any names or any geography yet.

I plan to ask the players to each create a character who has lived in the town for at least two years, and to write an extensive character background working in traits and relating them to previous experience. Each player will also be asked to describe their characters motivations and short term goals based on these back stories. Characters with more complete stories will be awarded more starting gold on character creation.

Based on what the players write, I will create the hundred mile radius surrounding the frontier town. The story line for the first three levels will have to do with reconciling conflicts in their stories, and resolving short term goals.

Well, that's all we have so far, and we'll be posting ideas to each other for another week or two until we finalize the rules and create characters. I would love any suggestions folks have for this world, and I plan to read all the posts in this thread to see other folks' ideas.

Thanks, Meibellum, for starting this!

Cazin.

How about the kingdom or city of Skrymir, on the Cormorand Coast? I just made that up.

Could be something like GRR Martin's Aerie (sp?), only a city, rather than a keep. Maybe a city in a hollowed out mountain like The Devil's Tower...

Here's an alphabetical list of all the names (given names, surnames, and place names) that I've used so far in my homebrew world, Malendev. Whenever I name something or somewhere new, I check this list to make sure I haven't already given that name to some other god, person, country, province, or city already:

Other things that are coming to me:

Asansolapur: I picture a kingdom something like Nepal/Tibet, resting in a series valleys in an enormous range of mountains,The Mountains of Twilight.

Major cities of Asansolapur: Jeeling, Am-Nemil, Ghostivar.... Yetis might be a second class, or even enslaved race.

The Shimmering Waste: A gypsum desert, crossed by Halfling caravans.

Doloon: Coastal fishing city, like a steampunk version of Marseilles, situated on The Lantern Coast, so named for the intricate paper lanterns that hang in all of the fishing villages.

Zolder, Hidden city of the Mountain Gnomes, a hardier, more serious breed of gnome.

Carnassium, City-State in the Echo Archipelago, famed for its colleges of Wizardry.

Sazanne, The Eternal Empire: Capital, Enderban, famed for the Iron Empress and her legendary Midnight Guard, recruited from a rare, noble breed of good aligned Orc with dark blue skin known as Cobalt Orcs.

The Startide Plains, where Mastodon herds still migrate and the ruined pyramids(think more Aztec than Eygptian)of an ancient empire can still be found.

And that's all I have for now.

I am currently running Genericland, land of all fantasy tropes. Anything that can exist, does exist. I tend to avoid nonsense names, and all things have very descriptive names; IE, "the king", "the empress", "the metropolis", etc...

I am currently running an underdark campaign.

My players (dwarves from the city of greatmine) are currently exploring the underdark to shore up the power of their home city.

Currently, they are in the old dwarven city of stoneforge, a city that somehow go turned entirely to stone by "dwarven-style" medusae.

This is great! Now, from my own world in it's infancy...

EOS: A great cataclysm happened in living memory radically altering the landscape, destroying empires, altering magic (both arcane and divine), and ultimately shifting the balance of power towards evil.

EOS's pantheon was a Forgotten Realms sort of balance system with an over god keeping the lesser gods in line so as to keep the balance between good/evil, law/chaos, and life/death. All this changed with the ending of the gods rebellion and the death of the over god and the greatest god of goodness (think Paladine from DL). In the chaos of this war of the gods all life has changed for the people and even the land itself in EOS.

Gods will be separated into categories:
-Gods of Light: More altruistic gods or benign even.
-Gods of Darkness: Gods of a more evil bending.
-Shadow Gods: Those who don't fall in with the war between good and evil
-Ancient Gods: Minor gods from those of the rivers and mountains, to Archons and Angels, Devils and Demons. (I want devils, demons, angels, and archons to play a big role in the workings of EOS in the new power vacuum.)

On a smaller scale (Likely where the first campaign will take place)..
-With the decimation of a once great and noble (if extremely lawful)empire smaller families rise and vie for political power. Giving rise to two brothers...

-Balphor Ardath: Great Warlord and tactical mind versed in both sword and sorcery.

-Lesinor Ardath: Smaller and sickly but bright and deadly of mind.

I want synthesist summoners to play a huge role in their growing strength.

Races:
-Humans: Duh, the dominate race on the campaign continent.

-Elves: Retreated into their great walled cities with the cataclysm. No free loving hippie elves here but tall grey skilled and serious.

-Gnomes: these guys will play an major role in the world as common in human settlements playing the part of arcanist and holders of ancient wisdom. Not bright and colorful but robed and holding great power.

-Ogres:Will be a common race as well. They and their half-kin will replace the typical orc role and be able to be far more scary.
Warlike and chaotic.

-Halflings: Farmers and surfs at best, slaves and servents at worst.

-Minotaurs and Tengu: From another continent and exotic. Those that come to the campaign lands will likely be outcasts or traders.

-Hobgoblins and Dwarves will be in a war that has lasted hundreds of years with the Hobs taking the upperhand and forcing dwarves to like as rebels in their mountain homes.

PS: The rest of this stuff is awesome! Keep it coming!

Let me pull up the map of my old homebrew world, see what comes back to me...

The Talenesti Conclave, the elven nation, which is mostly a massive island nation to the northwest of the primary continent. Think the Pacific Northwest. They don't have gods, per se, they worship various aspects of nature that they've personified (their primary gods are the Sun and his two wives, the moons, with an exiled/dead one (one of the moons blew up in the distant past). Most of the rest of the powers are animal spirits like Stag, Bear, and Wolf. Major cities are Minalla, Aera Natalin, and Taraniel.

The Wyldlands are a region tainted by the magic of the fey. Unprotected humanoids that stay in the area mutate, gaining animal features, and eventually becoming a mongrelman-like race called a wyldling. The primary powers are the fey, who act as a noble court, attended by druidic attendants that actually do all the ruling. Major cities are Mal Ko Forn and Sharn Ka Vatel.

The Khaglabash Jungle is mostly ruled by wild goblins, which are pygmy headhunters (as opposed to city goblins, which are mostly Ferengi from Star Trek). There are also girallons, wild bugbears, and ruins.

The Thronehold Confederation is a loose alliance of dwarven citadels throughout the eastern continent. They were once a kingdom, but there hasn't been a dwarven king for centuries, since the aberrations started rising from the deeps and throwing themselves against the citadels. Most of the inspiration for them comes from the old Warlord card game's depiction of dwarves. Primary cities include Khad Kebren, Khaz Modan, and Khaz Betor. Their only major above-ground holding is the Vale of Galen, a massive, isolated valley that is heavily farmed.

The nation of Deros is one of a handful of human nations, probably the most traditionally fantasy. Major cities are Deru's Gate and Silverglade (which is in open rebellion - the area it's in is analogous to the Scottish Highlands, and is similarly rebellious).

South of Deros and across the mountains is the nation of Tyrosh, a nation of seafaring traders and swashbucklers. They are not from this continent - they fled across the sea from a massive invasion of monsters (think the Zerg). They believe in the power of blood - their religion has a lot in common with the Aztecs, except they think that using an unwilling person's blood to feed the gods is immoral. Their only large city is Braavos, but it's quite large.

Northeast of Deros is the nation of Galantri, the largest human nation. It borrows a lot from Thrane in the Eberron setting or Deverenia in the Warlord CCG, with a large, monotheistic religion and a distrust of arcane magic. The names there are mostly Roman - Lutharius (a massive city at the edge of a freshwater lake), Eluvos on the eastern coast (a trading town with the dwarves of the Vale of Galen), Verosa, and Ghed's Crossing (a city built around the only bridge over a massive river that forms one of the country's borders).

The Volstag Islands are just a copy/paste of the Iron Islands of the Song of Ice and Fire books, with the capital of Birka. The only really unusual thing there is that there's a massive city being built by clockwork creations, a holdover from a previous age that's gone mad and is terraforming the area.

Timoran is a city-state of archaeologists, wizards, and scholars, ruled by two rival brothers, lifted from the Brother's Wars from Dominara. The people of Timoran explore the ruins of the Khaman Empire to the north, which was a nation of wizards, similar to Netheril from the Forgotten Realms.

Hah. That's a cool idea. Might have to try that out sometime.

Exactly. Freaked out my players too, since they just completely failed their knowledge checks to identify!
