Gunvaldr Gislasson, -1: LN male Humanoid(human) Polearm Fighter 12 / Sohei 1. Has old Crane style and likes it that way.
Agris of Kazel, -2: CG male Humanoid (gnome) bard 10
Adelaide Aksin, -3: CG female Humanoid (elf) hexcrafter magus 11. This *is* a multiclass prestige class, I swear.
Venture-Captian Colm Kenrick, -4: CN male Humanoid (human) Urban Ranger (Ranged) 12/Fighter 2. IMO, this is the best rogue build for PFS....
Sazdio Myan, -5: NG male Humanoid (human) Agility-patron witch. yawn.
Shaian Trickfoot, -6: NG male Humanoid (gnome) cleric of milani 10.
Ephreda Mona, -7: who the hell knows what Ephie is gonna wind up. Where I intend to spend an Ifrit boon....
Asoka Hitomi, -8: CN female Humanoid(Tengu) rogue 4/lore warden 2. natural attack rogue.

Only one PFS character. Fighter/Ninja/Wizard/Monk at level 5. Will add 3 or 4 prestige classes later on.
Goal : melee who dumps STR. Means : sneak attack and trip/AoOs (dealing sneak attack through the Halfling opportunist's capstone).
Optimization : AC and saves (though no Paladin due to RP)
Current classes :
- Fighter (Lore Warden) 2 = feats for the Halfling Opportunist and the Trip feat chain
- Ninja 1 = sneak attack
- Wizard (Foresight) 1 = AC + utility + familiar
- Monk (Flowing) 1 = AC + feat + saves
Future classes :
- Halfling Opportunist 5 = AC + saves + utility + sneak attack + capstone
- Sleepless Detective 1 = sneak attack
- Inner Sea Pirate 1 = sneak attack
- Master Spy 1 = sneak attack
Other classes considered for a dip :
- Urban Barbarian
- Alchemist
- Paladin (does not fit with RP though)

I have 11 registered characters
-1: Half-Elf Ranger
-2: Aasimar Gunslinger/Sorc/Eldritch Knight
-3: Tiefling Ranger/Witch/Barbarian
-4: Teifling Inquisitor (Of Shelyn)
-5: Half-Elf Oracle/Paladin/Bloodrager
-6: Human Lore Warden/Ranger (May take other classes after 6th level)
-7: Aasimar Lore Warden/Many Styles Monk
-8: Human Bladebound Kensai Magus
-9: Half-Elf Summoner
-10:Halfling Staff user (I haven't actually leveled him to 2, so I don't know what he will end up, but likely to be multiclassed)
-11:Human Investigator (This guy depends on what changes are made to Investigator by launch of ACG to see what he ends up being after level 2)
I would say half of my characters will be multiclass, many with 3+. What I did notice though (with one exception) ALL of my characters have human blood. Go figure.
Duiker |
10 characters, I won't bother listing them all out because they're all single class except for two:
Gor: Armored Hulk 6, Archaeologist 1, Dragon Disciple the rest of the way. Idea was for a barbarian who loves magic and studying because of being sole survivor of a tribe rescued by a high level mage. He dedicates himself to defending good mages, and then discovers his own magic in time. I really like him.
Cassiel: Samurai 4, Zen Archer the rest of the way. Idea was to use Axebeak mount and take all of the feats such that he is constantly moving and full-attacking as a mobile archer (think Mongol except on a freaking dinosaur). He was GM credit until level 5 and then I only played him once, because it just didn't end up being all that fun in practice.
The Fox |
Here is the full list of my characters' class combos (as I said above, all are multiclass).
1. Bard (street performer)/Cleric (of Calistria)/Fighter (cad)
2. Gunslinger (mysterious stranger)/Paladin/Fighter
3. Alchemist/Barbarian/Fighter/Gunslinger/Ranger/Sorcerer/Wizard/Rogue
4. Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight
5. Swashbuckler/Sorcerer/Eldritch Knight
6. Paladin/Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple/Eldritch Knight
7. deceased :(
8. Bard (archivist)/Lore Oracle/Pathfinder Chronicler
Only one of my characters (the gunslinger/paladin) has no spellcasting.
Even without prestige classes included, all of my characters would still have at least 2 base classes.

Hm. Let's see.
** spoiler omitted **So out of 10 builds that are in progress or planned, I either go straight or dip one or two levels if I think it'll improve the build. The exception is my fanfighter, which is going to involve at least 2 levels in 3 or 4 classes in order to be viable.
I managed to make an effective fighting fan based character as a single classed ninja. Note, I said effective, not optimal. Though at 9th (now 10th) level, she can burst damage for around 130-150 points in a round, if circumstances align and she hits on all her (sneak) attacks.
As a side note to my previous post, not only do I only have 1 multiclass character, but I don't have any repeated classes among my 12 characters. That used to not be true, when my Oracle had a level of Fighter, but then Warpriest came out and I retrained into it. The full list is:
Sorcerer 13
Cleric 4
Ninja 10
Monk 7
Fighter 3
Oracle 5/Warpriest 2
Magus 2
Investigator 4 (Will add a level of Sleepless Detective at 6th)
Bard 3
Paladin 2
Brawler 1
Ranger 1 (currently, but may level 1 retrain him into a Wizard)

here goes: (are we sure we should count Prest. Classes as an extra class? you can't be JUST an Arcane Trickster for example...)
I don't consider PrC as multi-class (in the old days you didn't take the multi-class penalty for PrC). I also don't consider the two different classes needed for PrC pre-requisites as different classes, though technically I guess they are.
2 single class (cleric, summoner)
1 wiz/sorc (tried the arcanist, but liked this better)
1 paladin/sorcerer/dragon disciple (technically MC :)
The Fourth Horseman |
Let's see What do I have?
-1: Human Inquisitor 6 (retired)
-2: Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 18 (almost retired)
-3: Angelkin Paladin 7 (3 more levels of Pally / 1 level or Oracle / 1 level of Mammoth Rider planned)
-4: Human Fighter 5
-5: Human Summoner 10 (Summoner all the way!)
-6: Elf Magus 3
-7: Unmade Blob 1 (Most likely Dhampir Bones Oracle)
-8: Unmade Blob 1 (Most likely Aasimar Celestial Sorcerer)
-9: Half Elf Arcane Sorcerer 3
I'm not planning on doing a bunch of multi-classing.

PFS:
-1 Cinodem "the Doctor" Noyllopa: single classed Hedgewitch whose favorite spell is Vomit Swarm.
-2 Lysander Spurius Dragomir, the Lead Battalion Herald of the Ninth Army of Exploration: Palabardanger [Paladin (Holy Tactician)/Ranger (Freebooter)/Bard] My favorite character, a paladin who gives ridiculous buffs to all allies, even making a party of regular bards into melee juggernauts.
-3 undecided: no clue
-4 undecided: possibly Summoner/Fighter who uses Butterfly's Sting with his eidolon.
-5 Rolf Rolf Tollwut the Convict: Lunar Oracle single classed
Non-PFS:
-Ockham Fetterwrecked: single classed Oracle of Lore
-S'walter Sedgeshiradshamormr: Nagaji single classed Barbarian who was reincarnated as a Catfolk and can now no longer pronounce his own surname.
-Gorch Stronguller: Scarred Witch Doctor who is working on going into Arcane Archer.
Wrong John Silver |
Four characters, all single classed (and first level, so it's to be expected). They are:
Nature Oracle
Fighter
Cleric
Bard
As it stands, I'm going single class with them all. However, I might go Master Spy with the bard. I don't know yet. The Oracle is going to have Eldritch Heritage (Fey) eventually, though. I think. I don't always plan these things out--I prefer keeping a few things uncertain.

I managed to make an effective fighting fan based character as a single classed ninja. Note, I said effective, not optimal. Though at 9th (now 10th) level, she can burst damage for around 130-150 points in a round, if circumstances align and she hits on all her (sneak) attacks.
Doing a ninja is probably the best single class method to accomplish this in PFS (Vivisectionist Alchemist for non-PFS). I considered going that route, but my first PFS character is a Ninja and I'd prefer to explor other classes and possibilities before repeating a class I've played before.
I came up with a Fighter/Urban Barbarian mix that was a VERY effective front line tank... but the cost of gear is huge. The character absolutely depends on Agile weapons to deal damage, and two agile weapons will cost 16k to 20k gold depending on special materials. The build needs Celestial Armor to be an AC tank, and that's another 22k. I'd planned to use GM credit, but even in PFS that is a lot of GM credit. (On the other hand, what else am I going to do with the high tier scenarios I've GMed?)
I posted a thread about this looking for alternate ideas, and someone posted the build I intend to use in response. It's a crazy mix of different classes (the only I can remember is Holy Tactician Paladin) that's ready to go by level 5 and concentrates on buffing/debuffing rather than doing damage. Since I envision the fan fighter as more of a battlefield dancer than a brute tough, I think that fits better. Though part of me still drools over the fighter/barbarian build.

21 "defined" PCs, only one of them, my first PFS PC, is multi-classed, Fighter 10, Cleric 1, Ranger 1. He went Cleric at 2nd level, Cleric of Desna, Travel and Liberation domains, which saved him a bunch of feats for a bunch of useful abilities for only a point of BAB. He took the level of Ranger at 11th so that he would get his bonus Fighter feat at 12th level, with a BAB of 11, to get Improved Precise Shot.
SteelDraco |
I just got the chance to play my first PFS session, rather than running, and ran a multiclassed barbarian (Drunken Brute/alchemist (Grenadier). He's a follower of Cayden Cailean that throws molotov cocktails at foes, and has Craft (Brewmaster) maxed out. I'll probably go mostly alchemist with the occasional level of Barbarian.
If I start a more serious PFS character, he'll probably be a half-orc Barbarian/Summoner, though the Barbarian levels will probably be just the one.
Majuba |
Umm.. somewhat multiclassy... 8 out of 11 have or will have multi-classing... 2 of the remaining 3 might... one will have 6 classes...
Cleric/Monk
Fighter/Lantern Bearer
Wizard/Bloatmage
Barbarian/Crypt Breaker
Cleric (?/Pathfinder Savant?)
Bard/Paladin
Rogue/Monk/Fighter/Cleric/Barbarian/Halfling Opportunist
Ranger/Monk
Monk (?/Cleric?)
Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight

Since I spend a lot more time planning characters than I get to spend playing characters, I have lots of characters who will multiclass that haven't yet. (At least half my characters are level 1 still)
-1 (Doesn't exist because he was deleted after my -2 was created without ever being played and the website won't let me use the number again)
-2 Planned to be Guide Ranger 4 / Sniper Rogue 2 / Horizon Walker 6 (not entirely in that order). Currently Guide 1 / Sniper 1
-3 Planned to be Mysterious Stranger Gunslinger 1 / Tattooed Sorcerer 1 / Eldritch Knight 10. Currently 1st level.
-4 Planned to be Urban Savage Barbarian 3 / Lore Warden Fighter 3 / Aldori Swordlord 1 / Duelist 5. Died at level 2. May get remade someday as I really liked the build.
-5 (Recreation of my -1) Archaeologist Bard 11 / Mysterious Stranger Gunslinger 1. Currently level 1; I've actually lost track of his build and need to redo it at some point.
-6 Admixturer Wizard 1 / Theologian Cleric 11. Currently level 1.
-7 Aldori Swordlord Fighter 11 / Master of Many Styles Monk 1. Never been played.
-8 First World Summoner 12. Still first level. Have no idea if the archetype will actually be able to contribute in society scenarios or not. Not particularly useful in combat or as a skill monkey so far.
-9 Lore Warden Fighter 3 / Urban Ranger 3 / Student of War 5 / Sleepless Detective 1 (again, not in that order). Hasn't been played yet.
-10 Viking Fighter 12. Still first level. TWF sword & shield seems effective so far.
-11 Conversion Domain Inquisitor of Angradd 8 / Divine Scion 4. Third level. Created specifically for Thornkeep
-12 Two-Handed Fighter 12. Hasn't been played yet.
-13 Cleric 12. Hasn't been played yet.
-14 Standard Bearer Cavalier 1 / Evangelist Cleric 4 / Battle Herald 7. Hasn't been played yet.
So, 4/13 single class builds. That's actually higher than I would have guessed. I really enjoy multi classing and using prestige classes. My non-PFS character builds probably have an even higher percentage that involve dips, multiclassing, and prestige classing than my PFS characters do. Of course, the (excessive) focus on martial characters makes multiclassing more attractive; if I was more inclined to play full casters I'd probably at least try to multiclass less.
bdk86 |
I prefer to try and keep my characters single classed if at all possible; Pathfinder rewards sticking with a Base Class. Somehow, though, only two of my 2 of my 5 "regular play" characters meet this standard. I generally toy with builds for Level 1/Level 12 when exploring concepts to see if the setup would be viable. My current stable:
Level 13.2 Human Summoner
Level 9 Human Crossbowman (Crossbowman Fighter 7/Sniper Rogue 2)
Level 8 Human Winter Witch (Winter Witch Archetype 5/Winter Witch PrC 3)
Level 4 Ifrit Dawnflower Dervish Bard
Level 2 Aasimar Cleric (Going to go Hellknight Signifer)
Level 1 Halfling Investigator (Will Go Sleepless Detective)
Most of the multiclass builds I explore that involved two or more base classes just don't shake out as viable early enough for me to feel comfortable playing them in OP. The Crossbowman was planned out before Gunslinger was around and would be an even tighter concept if he could be rebuilt as a Slayer (won't ever have the PP in his career, sadly. Died a couple times =/).
tl;dr Multiclassing can be rough and requires careful planning; most characters suffer at some point from the level split if it doesn't feed into a tight concept (usually a PrC).

Not at all! I can't bring myself to multi-class. When I consider who a character is, their class is an essential part of that. I admire the theory-crafting other people put into it, bringing together adventages from various classes, but it's never appealed to me.
Tavi, Level 13 Sylvan Sorcerer
Afya, Level 12 Archaeologist Bard
Yamira, Level 12 Paladin
Hoshi, Level 8 Wizard

I'm just into the teens as far as number of characters. Most of them are single class: gunslinger 3, cleric 7, alchemist 6, bard 8, monk 9, sorcerer 2, druid 2, arcanist 1, investigator 1
I also have a few that aren't single. Two are single at the moment, but won't be for long - one earmarked for mystic theurge, the other an oradin-to-be.
The other exceptions:
My lvl 12 archer is: rogue 3, ranger 3, fighter 4, shadow-dancer 1, horizon-walker 1
My lvl 8 magus is: magus 5, sorcerer 1, red dragon disciple 2

Used to readily swear by the old as bones adage "PF punishes multiclassers", but these days, well, I ain't so sure. I've found that as long as you don't care about class reliant ability/spell DC's, multiclassing can be a huge boon.
That said, I don't really do "builds", or whatever. Organic character building is where it's at.
PC's with multiple classes I currently play in PFS:
-1: Vasco Cantige, Taldan corsair (Urban Pugilist 3/Lore Warden 6/Wild Stalker 4). Wholly organic!
-4: Solveig Megindottir, Ulfen flagbearer (Invulnerable Urban 3/Arcane Duelist 3/Dragon Disciple 4). Some planning, but the idea of going DD didn't appear until 4th level.
-7: Vittorio d'Auseil, Hungerseed merc (Samurai 9/Viking 3). Still some levels to go, since he's mainly a GM credit baby, but this one had a pretty strict feat plan so the last few levels are mostly an afterthought. Might get to use Deadly Stroke yet!
-9: Paurun Bindrani, Vudran channel & aura specialist (Cleric 1/Inquisitor 6). This one follows a rigid formmula since the point is to take advantage of the Aasimar Channel Force feats. Actually, every feat Paurun takes is about channeling negative energy.
Then outside PFS I had a barbarian with a lunar oracle dip who used Charisma for everything(too pretty for this cruel world), an alchemist/rogue multiclass with a fighter level to get proficiencies and a cleric/cavalier who used a conversion of the 3.5 PrC Radiant Servant.

I plan out to level 10, but 2 characters have made it past that.
1: (2) Urban Barbarian / (1) Internal Alchemist / 7 (Dervish Dancer Bard). At 9th
2: (7) Musket Master Gunslinger / (5) Inquisitor of Milani. At 12th
3: (1) Pistolero Gunsliner. Died on game 2
4: (9) Pistolero Gunslinger / (1) White Haired Witch. At 9th
5: (1) Oracle of Lore / (9) Separatist Cleric of Hanspur. At 6th
6: (1) Winter Witch / (1) Oracle of Winter / (8) Sorcerer (water bloodline). At 10th.
7: (4 or 5) Storm Druid / (1 or 2) Bloodrager (celestial) / (4) Storm Kindler. At 5th
8: (1) Gunslinger / (9) Myrmidarch Magus. At 5th.
9: (1) Thug Rogue / (2) Cavalier / (7) Reformation Inquisitor of Norborger. At 3rd.
Theoretical
10: (5) Holy Tactician Paladin / (3) Inquisitor / (2) Lore Warden Fighter
11: Sneak Attacker
12: Sneaky Investigator
13: Katana Cop (1 level each of): Urban Mad Dog Barbarian, Crusader Cleric, Urban Druid, Lore Warden Fighter, Gun Tank Gunslinger, Infiltrator Inquisitor, Investigator, Kensai Magus, Weapon Adept Monk, Urban Ranger, Sword Saint Samurai, Wizard, & Shieldmarshal.(trait allows for neutral-good barbarian/monks)

My -5 is that way. Had to dip into oracle to get the legalistic curse, and then a tight formula of cleric for the channel force feats. Took separatist as it's the only way to get Whimsey domain and still channel negative. But having +4 to the check on what Whimsey will do is amazing.

I have 5 PFS characters. Currently, none of them are multiclassed.
Admittedly, three are level 1 so they couldn't be multiclassed yet, but since two of them are Sorcerer and Wizard they are pretty much going to stay that way. The Gunslinger might get mutliclassed at some point, I haven't decided yet.

Hmm in PFS i have:
Druid 9/Monk 2/Barbarian 2 - Dex based Melee machine
Druid 11 Ooze druid fun no one expects the flying ooze
Bard 3 Sound Striker basically ended by the controversy
Druid 5/Urban Barbarian 2 - Trying to see how offensive a small air elemental can be
Tetori Monk 11 Cause someone said you couldn't grapple at high levels, nuh uh
Bard 9 Buff bard with some fun with Thundercaller and Pageant
Druid 8/Monk 2 Batman Halfling Druid fights as a Dimunitive Bat go d3+25 damage and its fun handing out a sheet to explain what his barks and screeches mean
Monk 3 Grippli cause who doesn't like a Frogemonk
So i guess I have only been Multiclassing with druid right now just to make wild shape much more fun.
