There is one science fiction short story, premise of which is as follows.
During another dispute between Russia and Japan for Kuril Islands russian government called for referendum, with question is follows.
1:I am for transferring Kuril Islands under jurisdiction of Japan.
2:I am against transferring Kuril Islands under jurisdiction of Japan.
3:(which was added as a joke to publicly make fun of Japan)
I am for transferring Russian Federation under jurisdiction of Japan.
GUESS WHAT 95% VOTED FOR?
I heard 103%. Maybe that shrank a bit in the final results?
Do we count votes of polar bears?

Now, now. Don't you think the Russians has it bad enough having to deal with Putin without also getting Sarah Palin dropped on them? Show some compassion man.
On other hand, russians get substantial amounts of good,hard-working bear population.
You see,we love bears so much,we feed them cookies and teach them to shake handsAs a matter of fact,my own dog has the same general size and shape as a small bear.

The simple answer is idiots that have not thought things through.
The simpler answer is enough publicity to attract enough people who will sign a petition just for amusement value. Trolls, in other words.
This thing hit major media. Millions of people have heard about it. A tiny fraction have signed it.And, given that it may well have been a Kremlin plant from the start, they probably also seeded the initial signers to give it credibility.
How many of those signers do you think are actually Alaskans who are serious about wanting it to be Russian?

Even if it reaches the level of success, all it means is the government needs to handle the request somehow. Considering how much the US government would LURVE to have Russian nuclear silos in Alaska, I would go out on a limb and say their answer would be something like "We have discussed your petition and decided that it's a matter of national security. Petition will not be signed into law. Sorry."

If we're returning it to anyone, how about the Natives?
Well the "Return to Russia" petition seems to state that Russia explored it before the Colonial Americans as a precedent for a claim, it would be hilarious if there were a petition to return the whole of North and South America to it's indigenous inhabitants.
Alaska actually has a fairly large Seccesion Movement, but they want independence, Not Putin. The economic ramifications of this sort of thing never really occur to knuckleheads that push for them.

You do realize that if this passed, you'd have to also get it going for most of Washington, Oregon, and California (to the aptly named Russian River) as well as a stretch of British Columbia?
How far east did the Russians get? Because I wouldn't be terribly upset if we lost the western half of Washington.

Isn't that where Paizo itself is?

Good point.
Perhaps we could merely concede the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia region?
