Ellen page aka shadowcat

Good for her.

It's a much nicer life to live when you aren't trying to hide who you are.

It's much nicer for everybody when you can be who you are. On a selfish note, I'd hate to be the poor guy who finds out he wasted all the investment in a relationship only to find out is was all a lie, and one told out of fear of society at that. That people still feel they need to hide something about themselves that harms no one doesn't say anything decent about the rest of us.

Good for her, but, um, which movie was Shadowcat in? First Class? I don't remember her at all.

The 3rd one, Last Stand, which I don't think I ever saw. And the upcoming one.

Hmm, I think I saw that one in the theater. I don't remember anything about it, though. Apparently, you made the right choice.

Is there any source that Page had ever been dating a guy seriously? If this is purely hypothetical, why even bring it up?

And I'm not even going to unpack how that whole "wasted all the investment in a relationship" comment sounds...

If I had to bet, 'Dingo, I'd've figured you would have ignored the Page headline in favor of the one about strangelet creation that would "leave the planet ‘an inert hyperdense sphere about one hundred meters across.’"

I was at a mostly lesbian party once, back in the mid-90s. I think I was one of three dudes, and one of 'em was my comrade (his partner, our comrade, was polyamorous and bi) and the other was a stranger.

At some point during the party, the three dudes were being ignored in a corner and the other, stranger dude, turned to us and asked "You know why I hate lesbians?" My comrade steeled himself up and said, "No, why?" to which the stranger replied "Because they're not gay men!!!!"

We laughed and slapped his grabby hands away.

My first girlfriend came out to me a day after we broke up. Things were awkward for a bit, and there was some anger and frustration but less at her and more at my poor luck and overall circumstances- though I didn't like being lied to, this was something she was just discovering about herself. She turned to me for help in dealing with her sexuality, and it literally changed the course of my life. The last I heard she had left the country and found a black girlfriend, which is what she really, really wanted. A day doesn't go by that I don't think of her and pray for her success and happens.

Good for her.

Since I've never seen her in anything, my only question is this: Is she a good actress?

She specifically wanted a black girlfriend, or you simply mentioned the girlfriend was black for accuracy's sake?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go weep quietly over my fantasies of Ellen Page having a secret crush on me. ;-)

Jaelithe, IIRC Freehold is black. I'm inferring that he's making the 'which is what she really really wanted in comparison to a black boyfriend.'

just speculating. Don't infer the worst from an intenet post. Espeically when you've no data to support it. (aka, Freehold's cool)

Or maybe it's littlerally 'so' kind of like how I am. "She's gay. and? your point?" Kind of like with Michael Sam. "So? How well does he play?"

Huh?!

I asked a question. I didn't "infer" anything.

Frankly, you inferred the worst by assuming I did.

Good Lord. Now people can't ask a question for clarification's sake without it being assumed nefarious.

(Actually, "Is she a good actress?" is by far the more important question I asked.)

Then I apologize for misreading your question,

Edit: And the few things I've seen her in she seemed ok. Then again I enjoy Nick Cage's hamminess, so take my judgement with a grain of salt.

Actually Kitty Pryde was in all three of the first movies, but she was played by a different actress each time. Ellen Page played her in the third movie (as already noted). She will also be reprising the role in the next one as the Kitty from the future.

Though she's probably more famous as Ariadne, the architect in Inception. Or the actress in Beyond: Two Souls (and somewhat infamously, the actress they appear to have copied to model Ellie in the Last of Us).

Heh.

Cage is like his generation's Richard Burton—depending on the performance, one of the best or worst actors out there.

And the titular character in Juno, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

I look forward to the day when this kind of thing isn't newsworthy. Just because her sexuality shouldn't matter. But I'm glad things are changing enough she feels comfortable with this. Good for her.

while yes I am black, she really REALLY wanted a black girlfriend. She is Russian herself, and thought black people were beautiful. She would gawk at me sometimes.

Really? You don't remember her going up against the Juggernaut? She phased him into the floor and then you get the line "Don't you know who I am? I'm the Juggernaut, b$#~#!" That thing was played to death all over the internet for months.

I'm now imagining an adorably Russian-accented version of Scooter's "Like a unicooooorn" line from Borderlands 2. :)

Freehold summed things up better than I did. Things would be much better for everyone if there wasn't all the negative crap (as in the prejudice and worse) that sadly happens when someone is open about being gay. I know a few people who were in relationships that ended with the other person coming out of the closet, and I always wondered why there was an attempt to live as something they weren't. I understand that many people aren't sure of themselves, but I also have seen people living a lie out of the fear of society's reaction to something which doesn't harm anyone when it is out in the open. Sadly, homosexuality has been treated as a crime for so long that people are probably still trying to hide when there shouln't be any reason to. The sooner that ends the better, for absolutely everyone.

Grey Lensman wrote:

The reasons are legion.

I know. The overwhelming majority of reasons should not be, but that is something for the rest of us to work on. No one should ever cite fear as a reason they stayed in the closet for so long. It's an indictment for the rest of us that people still do.

Correct, whether she is gay, straight, bi, non, poly, or whatever (as long as it is between consenting adults) what does it matter?

That's true on a deep level. It shouldn't matter.

But until it actually doesn't matter, until it stops being a common target of prejudice, it's a good thing for public figures to come out publicly. It makes it easier for those still closeted. And those still growing who might never have to be in the closet.

If Michael Sam makes it to the NFL, he'll be the first active, openly gay player. That's important. It's also important and sad that his chances seem to have dropped since he came out.

It does matter if Page and Sam and so many others going public stops non-hetero kids (and adults) from hating themselves into depression, self-harm, and suicide. It matters if it makes parents rethink throwing their kids out or disowning them. It matters if it stops even just a few would-be bullies from tormenting kids who are vulnerable and different. It matters if it convinces more kids of politicians to come out, and that changes that politicians' position to be pro-LGBT equality.

Regardless of whether it should matter or not, in the here and now it matters. It matters a great deal.

Meh, not concerned about mass extinction, rather concerned about shadowcat suffering emotional issues that might have removed her from the role of kitty pryde. If kitty is happy, yellowdingo is happy...and may yet see her in film version of xmen issue 143? Where kitty is home alone for Christmas when a giant monster breaks in to eat her.

I've also been seeing "damn, I missed my chance" and "I can still convince you otherwise, Ellen!" all over the last few hours, and it's really beginning to weather my patience.

On a positive note: I'm happy that she's happy! It's not easy for anyone to come out, but it's gotta be even harder when you live such a high-profile life.

God I would watch the crap out of that movie. One of my all-time favourite XMen stories. Only the Dark Phoenix Saga beats it imo.

No. The only thing I remember about the third X-Men movie was that it was really awesome...and then the weed wore off.

Come to think of it, maybe that's why I don't remember anything about that movie. I also never saw Juno, but I did see Inception. Didn't realize her name was Ariadne. That's cool.

OK then. It's very likely that you both know at least one out LGBT friend, family member, and/or co-worker. If you won't believe me and others here, ask them: "Do you think it helps LGBT kids to know that out adults like Page and Sam can be successful, talented, respected, and live happy lives with their same-sex partners?"
