And a new update - preview of medium, metamorph and tainted!

Wow, Preview 3 is awesome. I don't have time to give a full review:

The Medium looks pretty cool, though still superficially similar to the Thaumaturge from the Thunderscape setting, though the Medium only channels one spirit companion - I do see that the intro text mentions being able to change your Spirit Companion through the course of the campaign - is this detailed elsewhere, but currently left out of the preview?

- I think Revelations needs a name change. I totally get why they are called Revelations, but the PF Oracle already has these.

- Thematically I'm seeing a whirl of interaction with the spirit world (seance, spirit guidance, revelation), so the name "Medium" really works for me.

- I'm not sold on the mechanics of spirit guidance thematically - they seem tacked on, and combat related - I'd like to see Perception buffs from a spirit on the shoulder or Sense Motive buffs from wise spirit whispering etc etc…

- Flavourwise I don't see a d8 HD or 3/4 BAB, and the weapon and armor profs match a d6 HD, 1/2 BAB character. Given that you could have a Barbarian Spirit Companion, I don't think d8, 3/4 BAB is warranted. Playtesting will decide I guess…

- On a related note, does the Spirit Companion's Class HD affect the Medium? Given the hit points are more than just physical, perhaps there is an interaction.

Love the Metamorph - the options for both Genesis and Phenotype really make this class stand out with options.

- I like Adaptive Defense- simple and fun.

- I see Enhanced natural attacks (+ x) - this could be great or way too great. I'm sure play testing will nut this out.

I can't quite get the Tainted - the flavor is fairly straightforward, and I'm sure Bradley has a slew of options here that are interlocked and inter-related. The PP, ST and TP stuff seems like it requires a lot of bookkeeping, but as the author of the Direlock I can't really complain about that. ANd maybe it is really simple. :)
Seeing as we can't see the Planar Attunement power, I can't really comment on how I think this works. But it looks pretty darn cool.

- Is missing its Weapon proficiencies.

I'm sure there is a lot still to be revealed about all three of these classes...

I checked. What I turned in had proficiencies. Just go with simple. That being said, what I turned in was first draft, and every first draft I ever do has the power so dialed down you'd be appalled. First, build a framework, then buff it to your desired power level.

Note that class previews have lots of things cut away - ass a teaser and (I guess) to save space. Weapon proficiencies might have been deemed unimportant and thus left out for preview.

Nice one El! Farash would be proud...

Ah, Farash. Did he ever figure out what 'sapient' meant?

So, a bit late. But the Demiurge is now ready. All 12k words of it.

Since I don't recall too much being released about it, here's the short gist.

You are a philosopher warrior. You tap into the World of the theory of forms, and are able to create living tools to your specifications. Need a scout? Create a facsimile of life that is skilled at Stealth, is able to fly, and that allows you to see through its eyes. Need to hold a chokepoint? Create a brutish facsimile that can't move, but has more attacks to bear and is able to disrupt the terrain around it, making it harder for foes to pass. Or link up the facsimiles using rhetorical tactics to create a wall of Law, or boosting the power of one facsimile of life with the strength of the other.

Each demiurge focuses on a single path to enlightenment, contemplating how each path relates to the Perfect World. There are six such enlightenments, and they all focus on different aspects of the archetypical fantasy roles: defender, martial, trickster, artificer, blaster, and one that focuses on the aspects of the class itself.

Looking forward to seeing what people think about it, as I don't even want to know how many hours I (and others!) sunk on it. Once you see how it looks, I'm sure you'll see why it took so long :)

Somebody better like it considering that by the time I'd finished slogging through all of the Facsimiles and options available in the class for a final proofread I'd burned up half the time I'd set aside to work on my own projects ;P

I don't have access to the preview, but just hearing your description gets me excited. I never thought I'd see Plato in Pathfinder. Thank you for giving me another reason to pick this book up.

Glad you're excited! I've wanted to see something based off of the Theory of Forms in Pathfinder for a while now, and this seemed as good an opportunity as any :)

Oh, and I'll mention I didn't just focus on the theory of forms. It's influenced primarily by Plato, but some other Pre-Socratics can be found within.

Thales, unfortunately, didn't make the cut.

I believe there were also heavy influences from Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land.

;)

J/K!

Seeing as how I wrote 3 or 4 programs to help figure out the mathomancy of this class.... that's not too far from the truth.

One of the editors is trying to edit it for the KS update on Sunday for the playtest doc. We'll see if they get it done on time.

I personally playtested the "midway point" of the class in a spelljammer game. Was a lot of fun.

I take it the update didn't get back from the editors in time?

We didn't post the update on Sunday yet. We had it come in around 3AM on Sunday. So it's going through layout and a quick proofread today.

I personally hope to have it up LATE this eve. I had decided to wait for all the updates at once vs the one that should have gone up on Sunday and then another one with the demiurge.

The page count so far for the book is around 95, as the archetypes will be introduced as well.

So, by my count, that means the demiurge is between about 13-30% of the book? Huh!

Alright, thanks for the response. Cannot wait util tonight then, hopefully. Can't wait to get a glance at the demiurge and what new archetypes you guys have. Maybe this battlelord too.

:-)

15% after the layout on the playtest document.

This doesn't include the two concept designs, two guest designers, chapter on hazards, art etc.

I think it will be 9%-10% once it gets all said and done. Around a 154 minimum page count for the total overall book.

I hate to be that guy but any word on the update?

Where can we purchase when it's available, also approx price?

OmNomNid wrote:

Please be that guy. It helps in accountability and keeps us focused. From what I can say is that it's halfway done in layout (it's a lot of formatting text and introduction of multiple charts throws off the two column standard presentation). Almost there, and there was a few last minute tweaks to classes for this revision that I felt were a must to include.

I will update the KS page as well.

Will is also probably foaming at the mouth waiting to see his edited copy)

Insain Dragoon wrote:

It will be available here on Paizo, as well as RPGNOW and d20PFSRD stores.

Approximate pdf price will be between $15 - $20. Hardcover will also be available a short time after the pdf and should cost around $40 - $45 respectfully*.

*Prices are an estimate and are not guaranteed. They are subject to change upon actual release.

Alright then, keep up the good work. All I do after and before work now is refresh my Kickstarter waiting for the update. A particularly frustrating prospect as I had five other updates today, each one my hope it was this update.

It's true. I am foaming at the mouth to see how it turned out.

But really, it's probably my fault for writing a class that requires such a long editing session :)

Don't smile, Will; it is your fault we are waiting, what with your awesome sounding but overtly complicated class.

So any update on the update?

I keep missing Kickstarters of things I'd like.

So when is this coming to paizo.com?

I don't know if it's complicated, so much as there's the possibility of a lot of depth. I'm pretty sure it makes sense once you read the whole thing! And then reread the facsimile section a few times.

Oh no worries, I intend to. So far all of the classes seen have been stellar, but the demiurge has been at the for-front of my thoughts lately. Partially because it sounds different front existing classes (if what you described is accurate), and partially because it's been withheld this long from the beta I can't stand waiting anymore- I need to see this class!

Nah. You can see imperfect copy at best...

Allegory of the Cave

Now I know; thanks Drejk.

Hah! It's not often I actually laugh out loud at something on the internet, but thanks Drejk.

Yes, this was heavily influenced by the Allegory of the Cave, and the Theory of Forms & Plato in general.

I would say it's fairly unlike any other class, if only for the fact that the main class feature is the ability to create life in way that can kinda-sorta-maybe be described as the cast-off love child of a tripartite tryst between Summon Monster, an Eidolon's evolutions, and the Words of Power.

It does have some bardic hints, in reference to Plato and Socrates work as teachers and orators, respectively. And the Enlightenments are modeled in the same vein as bloodlines / Orders. So it's obviously not 100% unique, but the main thrust hasn't been done before in a class, best I can tell.

Sounds like it's going to be a blast to play. Any archetypes for it planned like the other classes in the book?

That's okay. I heavily modeled the Mystic after the Qinggong Monk. Plus the Elemental Paths are similar to Mysteries.

Hey, that joke was obvious, wasn't it? (for those that have some idea about Platonic idealism)

Quote:

I linked Allegory of the Cave (instead of theory of forms) because it seems to be the simplest and fastest digest of Platonic idealism.

OmNomNid wrote:

Yes, there will be one where the demiurge absorbs his facsimiles to grow bigger faster stronger. There is a draft of one where he is a facsimile. There is one that focuses on the 4 humors.

You should see the email with the link :)

The original goal date was this month (july) some time near the end. There is a slight hiccup in production side, that I think will push this to August.

You guys do not disappoint- awesome! Keep up the good work while I bury myself into the demiurge.

I'm really curious about the 4 classes from the 75 and 150 pledge rewards.
Are they on playtest yet?

Sadly i have discovered this when the KS was already over :(

I do believe that, along with the demiurge, is what was taking so long. No idea what those are going to be, other than maybe one called the battlelord.

A pity you missed out on the Kickstarter- the betaed classes so far have been amazing and stand out from a lot of the stuff Paizo/3rd-parties have put out, both in theme and ability. My top three right now have got to be the demiurge, conduit, and medium. They're awesome.

I seem to remember an update saying that they were having extra passes between the pledgers and the editors/designers to get them balanced, but the tone and style that the originators wanted.

Sorry you missed the Kickstarter Geppou.

I've only backed 8 or so projects, but Pathfinder supplements were more than half of them.

Huh, the class is 20 pages long. And it looks great in layout!

Uh? When the did the book changed its title to The Demiurge And Company?!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My contribution is the Synergist, which seemed perfect for a book with Collective Influence in the title. The Synergist essentially absorbs the success of her companions to contribute to more successful endeavours. She also borrows a lot of the Cavalier and Inquisitor's teamwork concepts.

The original name I had for the class was Synergist, then my creative brain developed a fondness for "Metapath" but my erstwhile peers found that needlessly esoteric, quite apart from being an entirely made up word. So Synergist it is. Again.
