I agree. Kingmaker looks like the best option out there, but the minute an opening is posted it's filled up by 50 applicants within 30 seconds.
Maybe the best thing to do is start one with rotating GM'ing. We agree on the basic ruleset that will be used and how the game will be run. It's really mainly sandbox anyway, having vast flexibility of modules that can be run independently of the core AP ones.
I'm in favour of using Maptools (free) with a voice chat option, to get the closest thing we'll get to a tabletop game. Once or twice a month. Predetermined day and time.
My pet peeves: far out races and classes.

As a GM who recently completed Kingmaker, I can say that this particular campaign is not well suited to Play by post, though I'm sure it is possible.
Our tabletop campaign took two and a half years of gaming once a week for 5-7 hours, it spanned decades of game years, and was thoroughly awesome.
I tried GMing it on the boards and playing init on the boards and they always seem to fizzle out.
This game needs highly driven players who can plan for the future and make decisions with little to no direction (the game is a sandbox afterall).
A skype style game or something like that might work better, but with the right group, PBP could work.
For the right group, I might be willing to try GMing again :)

See. What did I just say: mention the word Kingmaker, and players are buzzing like flies to honey smears. I have my reservation about PbP games, even when they're not sandboxes. Never worked for me. I need a more instant cause end effects game.
GM DSP: what would it take to get you to take the bate a second time?
Ravenica: I like everything you did in your recruitment thread bar one: PbP. However, I'm pretty sure your game will kick off irrespective of my prejudice. Just you see.

Just like I predicted. Ravina aka DM AldoriRavenLord's thread kicked off yesterday and already has boomed with applicants. The interesting thing about Kingmaker is that you don't even need to stick to the core AP modules. The exploration/conquest/sandbox theme has a powerfully enough scent to lure most gamers into it.
Luv it.

I would consider it for players who have a track record for long PBP games, and who can demonstrate forward thinking and planning.
Also, the AP is BRUTAL. People drop like flies. It's very fun :)
EDIT:
I'd be willing to try it for a group of friends who know each other at least by phone number, so we can harrass each other into posting when needs be. :)

I've run it IRL, and am running it now, but every kingmaker I join seems to die.
The idea of the friends network is good, is there any other way to get a long lasting kingmaker?
I've been told before that pace (posts/day) are critical to whether a PBP survives.
I guess this is verging into PBP theory.

I've only been in a single Kingmaker game here, and like many, it fell apart early on. I'd love to play again though.
I'm a dedicated player who's been in some pretty long-lasting games on the boards, and the only time my post rate drops a lot is when real life attacks with a vengeance, or around holiday seasons when a lot of people are a little slower in general.
Forward thinking is something I can do quite well.

Well then, let's start ourselves a group! Seems to me we want to have a well-rounded party as well as a group of characters that can fill important leadership rules if/when the kingdom is created. Charisma is especially important, so a Charisma-heavy group would be unsurprising.
I think we should also go for a reasonable group of 4-6, without too many far-out there races or archetypes or such. Definitely steer clear of Eastern classes and gunslingers for right now, since they're commonly banned, and probably stick to core races (or widely accepted ones like aasimars or tieflings) to have the highest chance of being allowed. 20 point buy is the most common, so we should use that.
So, that all in mind, what do we want to play? I'm partial to sneaky types and warriors, so a monk or ranger would be right up my alley, and either could work for the game, I think.

I have never been in one but would love to try. I agree that a lot of pbp does due off. I will throw my perverbial hat in the ring, just I freely understand that since I am "late" to this party so to speak I am okay being a reserve peep. I know there are a handful of others that have shown interest before I, and I want them to have a crack at it first :). Otherwise I will stat up a peep sometime soon and post it here for all to see :)
