We just launched our new Kickstarter: the Advanced Bestiary for Pathfinder! I've had a lot of people ask for this over the years. Now's your chance to make it happen!

Hey Folks!
Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary is one of the most beloved of all 3.X books, and Paizo has used it a lot over the years. The brilliance of this book is that as a collection of templates, it doesn't try to replace your existing Bestiaries, or even just add to your number of options. It multiplies the value of every monster you already have, and gives GMs a lot of flexibility to fine-tune a foe's CR, adjust monster's themes to better suit an adventure, or just throw something at your PCs they aren't expecting!

The Kickstarter gives you an opportunity to pick up print, pdf, and even Hero Lab files for the updated, Pathfinder-compatible version of this classic d20 book, and I suspect the Early Bird option to pick up all three for $45 will go fast!

When I came on as Pathfinder developer for GR, this was the thing the most people asked to have happen. I'm thrilled to get to be a part of this, and look forward to picking up my own copy. (Especially with hero lab files. That's going to make brewing up evil for players to deal with SO much faster!)

Backer #37
This was a ground breaking book that did change the way templates were looked at in d20 gaming and an update of this book is fantastic news.

I cannot stress the importance of this book to new or old DMs who run PF and may have missed out on this when it came out for 3.5

This book has the potential to breathe new life into staple creature listings in the various bestiaries and in fact the listings of the pre-stated templated creatures can also inspire DMs to build custom encounters or scenarios around these write-ups, or build modules around the concept of some of the templates on their own.

Thanks for starting this KS - I hope in funds well over required for the 32 extra pages of content.

Backer # 47.

There wasn't even a pause from the time I saw this until it was backed. Only thing I had to do was decide what level to back it at (and since I don't use hero lab or dead tree books it was pretty easy there as well).

Same here, didn't read the blurb, finish date, etc - just backed it.

I had to revise my original post because I was asking for new bonus templates should the KS fund - when that was already covered.

This book should be a reflex fund for DMs everywhere, even if you don't use half the templates in the book having the book as a reference guide on building your own complex templates and ideas for parts of a complex template is invaluable.

I have been a strong advocate on these boards for a PF monster builder and template book from Paizo (which hasn't happened) but I am happy that GR is taking the latter task at hand and re-releasing this DM tool back into the wilds again.

Liberty's Edge

**** I still haven't looked for the release date. Probably should do that.

Also, shared on rpgcrossing.

50+ backers in around an hour. Think Green Ronin might be a popular company? lol

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I think the popularity is the book itself knowing that Paizo uses it extensively. That and the fact that Owen will be shepherding it as well. My opinion of course. It's currently the only book of the three advanced guides I don't currently have. Backed it immediately.

I'm in!

Edit: next time, read the link before commenting, genius!

Sweet! Got myself an 'Early Bird'. Can't wait till December.

Scarab Sages

I'm in. Somewhere around backer #63. Yeah, pretty much a no-brainer. 8^)

After some consideration, I upped my pledge to the early bird print level. Nice to have treeware! :-)

And backed... ;)

#99!

One minor request:
It looks like this will fund very quickly and therefore probably make all of the stretch goals. With that in mind please, please, please think about the fulfillment date. Don't be like every single other Kickstarter project in the brief history of kickstarter and ship 3, 6, or 9 months or more late.

I can be very patient. But, I would love for someone to tell me that something isn't going to ship until 2016 rather then telling me July of 2014, and then August, then November, then the following March, then maybe by summer.

The Kickstarter rule of thumb should be to consider the latest possible date a project could possibly be completed and then add 3 months or more to it.

/end rant against every single kickstarter project ever.

Actually quite a few kickstarters from our 3pp are delivered on time, and LRGG even sends their products out early. :)

That aside, Green Ronin has been around the block a time or two, I'm sure they're quite capable of delivering what they promise.

Early you say? I like the sound of that.

I'm sure they'll deliver. I am just hoping against all hope that July means July.

But, if there was never anything to try my patience then I could never hope to grow in the virtue of patience. :-)

I think one major factor in getting this on time (and I could be wrong) is that most of this is already done - that is, the core work and creative content. They will have to a 3.5 to PF conversion and if the goals are all then they need to commission some new art (which can take time) and add in 16 or less new templates (assuming min 2 pages each, with some going 3-4 pages possibly).

If this was something that they were starting from scratch then yeah, the usual delay concerns would be there but they already have a solid foundation to work from. They need to make the revisions/updates, add in some new content (templates and art) and then print. Some of the secondary stuff may be delayed (Hero lab stuff) if it’s dependent on core content, in which case it makes sense that it will come later.

I’m not worried about GR meeting their obligations

Let me put it to you this way: I would be quite cross if we didn't have this for PaizoCon. Which is in July.

hhhmm...This might finally force me to pledge...

Been there, backed that... #20-something or other.

Woot! glad to see this one is happening.

In. I missed the freeport one, but this is invaluable with the herolab files.

Do we count from the top or the bottom? It doesn't really matter to me where I stand in the order, just that I got in on the Early Bird Special.

Pledged.

BTW I have all three of the d20 versions. The Advanced Players Guide, Advanced Gamemaster's Guide, and Advanced Bestiary.

I am a Freeport backer which is already scheduled to be 4 months late. Why do I need this bestiary? Sell me.

That's discouraging.

Advanced bestiary was one of the best, if not the best, bestiary put out during the 3.X era (rivaled only by the bestiary from Iron Kingdoms or Sword and Sorcery). It was good enough that Paizo continues to use it to this day. (The other advanced books were pretty damn good as well.)

And Gen Con is in August, and...

We're motivated. GR is smart folks. Important work in the conversion is happening already.

I feel very confident about that July date.

The original sits on my shelf alongside my Pathfinder books...love this resource.

Backed!

Hope it makes the stretch goals...I'd love to see full-color art!

Ohhhhhh yeah. Insta-Backed!

I've got a PDF of the 3.5 version, and it was great and all, but I only really got into GM'ing in Pathfinder. A PF update -- including hero lab files! -- is exactly what the doctor ordered.

I am in for an early bird. I use the hell out of the Advanced Bestiary, so I will happily use the hell out of the pathfinder version.

SOLD! As someone who has been rebuilding CotCT in Herolab this will be super awesome as lots of things came from the original in that book.

Must have! Now, I just need to find a third job for all of these awesome kickstarters that are popping up lately.

Since several people have asked "Is there a way to buy more than one?" (And bless you all!), yes, and it's now covered in the KS FAQ.

I'm in. All the Advanced books from Green Ronin get a good bit of use in my gaming, so I'm definitely down to get them updated.

(Now just keep Owen busy with updates of the Sovereign materials from the AGG once this comes out!)

Saves FGG from having to translate the templates in our adventures anymore. ;)

The original is one of my most used books from the 3.x era.

Yeah, I agree we had to do about about 30 of them for one of our series.

I'm just glad the term for the Kickstarter circles around past the beginning of the next month - I've already pledged my money limit for Kickstarters this month. Rest assured, December 1st will find one more pledge coming... :)

We do TRY to time these things to be convenient for folks, without wasting anyone's time. :)

I don't know how well this Kickstarter's going to do. It's not even at 75% yet, and there are only 25 days left to go.

Umm. Is this really really dry sarcasm?

If not, I'd say this is going to absolutely explode. This thread has a veritable who's who of designers and publishers salivating over the heritage and impact of the pre-PF versions...

I agree this is gonna fail and fail hard. ;)

Just got on in the Early Bird Beast with little time to spare.

I'm a backer and have no concerns that GR will get this out in a timely manner. This and Freeport a few months apart. Woohoo!!!

For those who could use some monster templates in the short term, Book of Monster Templates will whet your appetite. I also think you'll get a better appreciation for what templates can bring to your game.

I wouldn't have backed this KS if I hadn't bought Rite Publishing's book. Now I understand the versatility of monster templates.

I had to get in on this one too. Backed as an early bird.

Thanks for the mention, it is also funny that you mention that, as The Book of Monster Templates was very much a homage to the Advanced Bestiary.
