Summoner or mystic / theurge?

Advice

Dark Archive

I have a PFS character that I haven't played much. He just hit 2nd level. He is a half-orc with a dragon like eidolon. I am tempted to remake him as a tiefling cleric of Calistira/empyreal sorcerer going into mystic theurge now that it is legal to get into the PrC early. What do you guys think?

It all depends on what you want from the character.

I'd say stay with summoner,

I want a character that will be the most effective in a wide variety of scenarios. I know that is a tall order, and no one can have the perfect ability/spell/feat, etc. for every possible situation, but I want to get as close as you can get. Plus I thought it would be cool to have a half-orc mounted on a red-dragon (eidolon) later in the game. Mystic theurge kind of intrigued me with the early entry, so that it isn't one the worst class/prc combos in the game anymore. All those spells.

Well, MT does give you a lot of spells, and with spells comes versatility. With a mystic theurge, in my opinion, you'll have a lot more options overall.

Now, with that said, summoner is better in combat, because, while they're very versatile, MTs lack the oomph needed to destroy stuff in combat as well as other classes/combinations of classes.

So, if you want versatile, go MT. If combat oriented, stay summoner.

one very cool thing you can do with MT that you can't with others is effectively use the feat Divine interference

Oh Please this isn't even close..SUMMONER

So, you want to completely gimp one class, to get another class, albeit at a lower level. Okay.

The one thing that a summoner has, that no other class has, is the eidolon. That will become useless if you do not take summoner levels. No prestige class enhance the eidolon. No prestige class or other class adds to the eidolon.
The only way you could gain from multiclassing a summoner, is to take the synthesist archetype, and that archetype is illegal in PFS.

The summoner has got a very decent spell list, but not good enough to use it for a Mystical Theurge.
If you want to play a full caster, start over. Get a full caster class. Go wild with Mystical Theurge. But the summoner is a poor class for it. Very poor.

I didn't say I was multiclassing summoner with Mystic Theurge. PFS let's you completely rebuild a 1st level character before they get to 2nd level. I was thinking about doing that and making the character a cleric/sorcerer instead of a summoner. Multiclassing summoner is bad news especially for mystic theurge, unless you want to deliberately weaken the character.

Sorry, missed that. In my defence, I was complete and utterly drunk when I wrote that.

No problem. I figured you missed that part.

If you are rebuilding and that allows attribute reassignment go wizard or witch/cleric or druid, sorcerers and oracles are not good seed classes for a theurge.

Sczarni

I disagree, they are merely a single lvl behind.

collectively this would be a problem if not for the SLA issue.

go with agathion aasimar and voila, now you're behind here and there, but now you have 4 more spells per slot a day, also if you focus on say oracle/sorc now you're only focusing on charisma to get saves from both sides equally high. Also there are a few cool tricks to charisma like if you have inner sea book scion of war (charisma rather than dex for initiative) and then if you take oracle of lore (particularly if you're going for just one lvl of oracle) take sidestep secret, now your dex bonus to ac and your reflex save AND your initative are all keyed off of charisma.

Now you can slap on some armor with 0% asf and go to town.
