ranged touch attacks

Advice

Hi there,

Is there a feat that allows one to increase the range of the touch attack. for example with a whip or something long range weapon?

thanks

Does it have to be a feat, and what kind of Touch Attack are we talking about?

Just some ideas:

  • The Conductive property on a weapon allows (SP) and (Su) touch attacks through said weapon, but not spells.
  • Touch-range spells could be altered with Reach metamagic.
  • Sorcerous Bloodlines and Alchemists' Discoveries can grant tentacles or stretching limbs to get some range on Touch Attacks.

Also: does it actually say anywhere in the rules you cannot deliver Touch Attacks with a weapon?

If you want to deliver touch attacks with the whip, you probably want the Magus. Spellstrike lets you deliver it with a whip. You could also use somoekind of Witch with the prehensile Hair Hex or the White Haired Witch Archetype.

Considering they made a class that specifically does this, no, you cannot deliver touch attacks with a weapon unless it specifically states you can.

You can deliver a touch attack with a natural weapon or unarmed strike ... however you no longer target touch AC.

To my knowledge unless otherwise specified, a magus using spellstrike does not target touch AC. As well he must use a slashing weapon (unless otherwise specified) with spell combat (granting free touch attack) otherwise he must hold the spell and use any weapon with spellstrike.

A standard whip is not a slashing weapon though a scorpion whip is and there is/was debate on the reach quality.

Clear, Thanks guys :)

This reply is full of wrong answers...like blatant ones.

1. A whip is slashing.
2. No a magus does not have to use slashing only: the blackblade must be a slashing weapon, they can still do that with other weapons (specific archetypes aside).
3. Your right about touch vs normal AC on the spell strike.
4. A magus (or any other ability to channel a spell through a weapon like conductive for sp/su and storing for regular) uses the weapon to deliver, therefore if the weapon is reach, then your spell is delivered at the reach of the weapon.

I will admit to my errors. For some reason I was under the impression that the whip was a B weapon whereas the scorpion whip was S. Seeing as there are multiple entries for them, CRB, AA, UC, UE. Probably because of the multiple threads about Blackblade Magi builds (which seem to be the most popular way to play one), my mind fixated on the need for a S type weapon. Regadless, I apologize for the errors.

On a side note, no one has mentioned the feat lunge which also increases the reach of a melee attacks (at least by 5 feet).

All good, just making the air clear on them as it can confuse.

As to lunge, yes it's a good way to make reach happen for melee attacks. As a spellcaster though, the BAB is hard to get early enough to matter. If you can get it without prereqs, then it could be very interesting.

There's always the aberrant sorcerer bloodline. You get increased range with melee touch spells over time. Also check out the spells Spectral Hand and Project Image. And of course a metamagic rod of Reach would work with just about any caster.

Just wanted to add/clarify that you cannot deliver with a natural weapon/unarmed strike for the free touch when casting the spell - you have to hold the charge after casting (intentionally, or by missing the free touch).
