Exploring the Solar System

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Ok...so who wants an AP exploring at least one other planet of this solar system? I know I do, but since they are doing a solar system rather than (or I guess in addition to) the planes system of other rpgs, it would be cool to see them be...realistic with the portrayal of other planets. Hear me out.

Now planets in the real world (universe, you get it), are TRULY alien. Venus is 900 F at the surface, you could swim in Titan's atmosphere it's so dense, you get the idea. But alien also means inhospitable. VERY inhospitable. That being said, since there is magic in this world, such limitations can be obfuscated, and space geeks like myself could travel to strange, alien worlds without if feeling like Star Trek (breathable air, perfect temperature and pressure, etc).

My point being, there is a real opportunity to allow players to explore incredibly strange and cool worlds, possibly populated by uniquely alien species, and I hope paizo (who has yet to disappoint me) can take advantage of this.

To see what kind of worlds are in the same solar system of Golarion please check out Distant Worlds, the book that talks about the other planets in the solar system.

Then do a search for the threads with community expansion on said planets (I really like Mikaze's one re Verces).

Then there is Book 4 of the Reign of Winter AP, which takes place on another planet in Golarion's solar system.

And doesn't Book 5 or 6 take place in another star system altogether? (*cough* Spoiler *cough*)

There's a PFS scenario that takes you off-world, as well.

In case someone doesn't want to be spoiled:
Eyes of the Ten takes you to Akiton (Mars). But that said, it's a pretty Star Trek like experience: breathable, if thin air; cold-but-bearable temperatures, and a sentient inhabitant race.

The planets in Golarion's solar system are based a lot on the pulp, science fiction, and 'sword and planet' books of the 20th century. Things like John Carter of Mars, some Lovecraft, The Destinies of the Stars, Rendezvous with Rama, and such are all inspirations. In addition, some real-world moons/planets inspired the worlds. For example, they took Europa (the moon with an ocean under ice) and gave it a civilization that lives underneath. There's also a planet with a toxic atmosphere that settles on the bottom, so people have to live on mountaintops. And one moon has nothing but silicon lifeforms. So there is a wide collection of crazy worlds from which to draw upon.

There's also some Hyperion influence in Distant Worlds.

Here is a little astronomy lesson! There is only one Solar System, ours! It's name comes from our star's name, Sol (also known as Sun). The generic term is star system! The more you know the better :)

I vaguely remember reading once that once of the planets in the Golarion system had a space faring(as in spaceships) race. I'd love to see some more on them, personally.

While that's one way to look at it, dictionary definitions disagree.

I'd imagine it as some backwater place finds a Stargate and the local adventurers get tied up in the possible wealth etc from it.

The star that Golarion orbits is also called the Sun by those in that system. They would call their planetary system 'The Solar System' albeit in whatever language they actually speak.

I think there's some Hyperion influence in *everything* I write. That series is amazing... Jacobs and I are both total Dan Simmons fanboys. :)

I almost wish you weren't. The man is a terrific writer, but a raving bigot. :(

Verces has aetherships.

Eox has freaky flaming death-citadel-spaceships.

(and Apostae IS a spaceship.)

And if you're looking for other means of inter-planetary and -stellar transportation, check out the Silver Maiden entry in the artifacts section of the Pathfinder RPG Mythic Adventures book.

Also the Starwalker mythic path ability, from Mythic Origins.

Really? I hadn't heard that. Link to source?

Please note that I love to death the Hyperion series as well as his horror books. Carrion Comfort is one of the few books to actually get under my skin.

Look up reviews and commentary on his book Flashback. The novel takes place in 2030, in a future where America has gone to crap because OBAMA.

Here is an NPR review, although there are more detailed critiques

One rant too many

Niven has that. As did Heinlein.

Why is this "because OBAMA"? It's not clear in the review. He's not the first to write about rampant entitlement programs; Leigh Brackett talked about the "farers" in her Skaith series (mid seventies).

Why would this be "crazy old sci-fi author syndrome"? It's a cautionary tale, like 1984 or the Y2K bug scare.

actually the book regularly implies that everything starts going wrong with Obama getting elected.

as for the second link...he argues that the biggest mistake in our recent middle-east interventions is that we were not brutal enough in our tactics, and pretty much paints Islam (not fundamentalist islam, but every single person who believe it) as the Zerg.

I dunno...I will let people read it for themselves and decide.

But now we are getting into politics and not Distant Worlds, so I will stop here.

I'll just add that if you really look at Fedmahn Kassad's background in Hyperion, you'll see some nasty anti-Islamic bias even then. In the nearly-post-scarcity semi-utopian future, all the Middle Easterners live in slum conditions for no particular reason, and Kassad is special because he was one of the scarce few willing to work and fight his way out.

Simmons was always a bigot, he was merely subtle about it until 9/11.

Necro'ing this thread because I just got my poster map of Bruce Heard's World of Calidar in the mail today, and it is amazing. I've known the cartographer, Thorfinn Tait, since we were part of the Mystara Mailing List back in the 90s, and have watched his skills grow over the years, but this blew me away. Put me on record to say that if Paizo ever does anything more with the other planets of Golarion's multiverse, they should enlist Thorf to map those planets out for them!

Take a look at his presentation on the Great Caldera of Calidar. And then take a look at the way he goes about developing his maps. Great stuff!
