Would you buy a Golarion / Inner Sea road atlas book, poster, or both?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Just like the title says. I'm polling to see if I'm the only one that would buy this product. As a GM that runs a very sandbox-y campaign I'd use the ink off of a product like this. Especially if it were a book that had pages full of various region maps, and included a complete poster as well.

So, would you purchase this product?

The Exchange

2 people marked this as a favorite.

hm. at this point, i would love to see a PDF atlas with an option to turn the hex grid on or off.

in case of a print version, it needs to include a transparent sheet with the hex grid on it. the old 2e forgotten realms box set had two of these of different scale, it was quite useful for quickly figuring out distance traveled.

the real problem with most atlas books imho, is when they focus not on usable maps, but on following the events of a book. dragonlance did this far too much. while some maps for the more famous megadungeons would be a good thing to include, i think what we both want to see are countryside maps in various scales. sort of like the area around sandpoint from rise of the runelords.

heck, there are probably a lot of maps that would be easy to include from existing products as is, just needs a reference to source in some cases.

Absolutely Captain Xenon, the most important thing for me though would be the actual roads. Knowing where highways, roads, and trails are (as referenced in the core rules for overland movement) would make my life as a GM a LOT easier when determining travel times for my player's characters.

The Exchange

the centerfold map in Varisia has this, listed in miles with a red line to denote where the road is. to get from Magnimar to Korvosa, for example, there are 10 sections of road. the artwork makes this specific map more in-character than i prefer however.

Id love something like that, even if it didnt actually include a detailed glossary but rather just laid out the map for you to fill in as needed.

Ive been working on our campaign area in just that manner. Map first, full of interesting points to be detailed later.

That map (varisia player map) is, sort of, exactly what I'm looking for. The cartography is very stylized fantasy, which is okay, but, as you say seems to be much more player character designed. The fact that it has at least some detailed roads, with mileages included, makes it very much on par with what I'd be looking for. I'd actually want more detail in terms of roads, though; I'd want separate line styles for highways, roads, and trails.

I'm thinking I can't be the only GM that would use the heck out of a complete Inner Sea atlas book/poster map.

Excellent!!! You're hired, er that is to say, I wish Paizo would hire you. That sort of map is exactly what I'd like to see, except for the entire Inner Sea. Daunting task, I know, but Paizo has already proven that they are a company that listens to their consumers. I'm hoping if enough people jump in here and say, "Yes! I'd use that." We might be able to actually have such a book in our grubby mitts in a year's time.

Yes! I'd use that!

I would love an atlas showing major (and minor) roads and trade routes (both land and sea). It would also be helpful if it had estimated travel times/distances between settlements/landmarks (like in the back of a standard road atlas).

I would definately buy that!

Book yes. poster no.

What if the poster was included with the book, would it turn you off to purchasing the book?

I'm with Umbranus, book yes.

Anyone else? Maybe I am one of only a few that would use such a product. How sad for me.

I would

I'd buy it. When its come up before there have been lots of good arguments against though.

It's commonly pointed out that cartography is amongst the most expensive part of a book. Its hard to see it being economical - everyone here would buy it sure, but how much would they pay? a book of predominantly maps is going to be considerably more expensive per page than a different kind of sourcebook. Additionally, if it's too be a consistent style throughout, it would probably take ages and tie up some of the company's creative resources for many months. There's also the point that, once they map something out, it's set in stone (more or less). They dont necessarily want to decide how built up central galt is yet (for example) but if they produce a road map - they have to.

All up, it's a much better project at the end of a campaign setting's life, rather than whilst its in mid development. That way the decisions have mostly been made and there's a large body of pre-existing maps to work with.

Yes to the book, especially if the poster folds out of the back of it!

Unfortunately though I have to agree with Steve - even if they do detail all the areas that haven't been detailed yet, they'd just have to make changes later when they get around to working out what they really want there and suddenly that nice shiny map book got invalidated :(

I would, however, put it as doable before end-of-life for Golarion, especially if it focuses on the Inner Sea (which sooner or later is going to be detailed enough and they'll likely have to shift focus to elsewhere on the planet)

Way to crush my dreams. :_(

I've always like my Trail Maps for Mystara and would enjoy something similar for Golarion. Ideally something that folds up just like a road map with the main map on one side and on the other or in boxes having useful info like climate data, travel time between major cities via road and ship, etc.

I would use the pants off of such a book, if such a book wore pants.

I know, right?

Depends on how much it costs and how much of it I guess is for the poster.

Liberty's Edge

Nice idea, but I do not believe Paizo has detailed out each of the regions enough for this...

...but, if it did happen, the routes by sea and river should also be included.

The Exchange

In theory, with these newfangled "pads", we now have the option to switch between topographical, political, travel, and climate/terrain-oriented maps with the flick of a finger. Just like Star Trek!

Of course, somebody's gotta do the work first. And odds are that some potential customers will geek out and start complaining that the climatology, hydrography, or vulcanology "are so unrealistic".

If I ran games in Golarion then yes, I would.
But seeing as I don't, probably not.

Sczarni

i'm still waiting for a Globe

Grand Lodge

A globe I can see, the details are indistinct enough to not stifle further design from paizo but colored-in enough to get some enjoyment of.

Just as long as they use more than just two shades of green, two shades of yellow/brown and two shades of blue like they did in the crap-bag offal poster map in the Inner Sea Guide -- and even worse, the regurgitation of said map as the giant seven foot map that was just a waste of money -- and paper.

Wow, thats the first time I've heard someone unsatisfied with the look of the inner sea folio. I loved that map - got it printed out on a single sheet as a backdrop for game night. :o

Grand Lodge

Captain Kirstov, I'm actually working on a fanmade globe... I got some cheap reject 12" diameter globes and am planning on overlaying it... just got to get it to print out right...

Anyone know any programs that can turn a flat map into a printable globe?
Anyone really good with geometry and can calculate the angle required to overlay said map onto a sphere?

Sczarni

I would definitely buy an atlas book. The only trouble I have with the idea of a poster is that I'd be worried about it wearing out or getting torn.

I know Fractal Terrains can do various projections, one of which wraps around a globe, but I can't remember if it's possible to import an existing map image into it (I do remember that it can work with heightmaps)

The thing you're looking for though is probably an Sinusoidal Interrupted Projection

Fitting in with an RPG theme though, consider This :D
