As I said, I haven't much interest in a community effort that can be easily divided along separate "group" lines. Any large or significant number that holds themselves apart could lead to division, majority to force their views, or just leave as their group. Seems like it might be more fun to save all of that for PfO and play without separate guild tensions clouding things. It could all work out fine, I suppose, but it seems a bad foreboding.
I am going to play and if I like what I see, I will hang around.

Nihimon, thanks for taking action on this.
Andius, thanks for offering informed commentary.
Hardin, thanks for taking the plunge :)
If we're going to build a robust community of practice it will have to be an emergent outcome of:
- a shared, joint enterprise
- mutual engagement
- a shared repertoire for negotiating meaning
So I don't think it matters what we play, just as long as it gives us shared action, interaction, and a chance to develop our own communication norms, shortcuts, in-jokes (Goblinballs, anyone?), etc.
I don't know Darkfall from experience, but based on what Andius said, it also gives those of us who are not PvP experienced a chance to create a framework where dying in-game doesn't ruin our day--we expect it as part of the experience. I think Bluud is absolutely right about our attitude towards PvP being critical.
We're going to play a game where you get killed if you take risks, so we better get used to the idea.

Well you guys are free to do what you want. I'll ally up with you. I'll group up with you. I'll hop on teamspeak with you. I'll fight alongside you unless it's a fight I don't believe in. I'll share my resources with you. I'll teach you anything you want to know about Darkfall. I'll do training exercises and spar with you. I just won't have the same name floating above my head unless we can all agree that we won't be aggressing groups and players who aren't a threat to us except when we are helping protect people or we all agree on it first.
PS. I'm currently on the PFO Fan and Empyrean Order Teamspeak if anyone wants to talk.

Well, got to stop soon, but I'm in a town named (I think) Margdyl/Migdyl?, snowy area in the north, large snow covered island to the northwest. Mining as I type, got about 150 "prowess" points (rewards for small tasks, spendable). Not found the bank yet, but learning the ropes. Same BS n global chat, but nicely laid out. Pretty large area that is considered a "safe zone" so tomorrow I'll go out and get into to a little trouble with mobs and see what I've learned.
I'll keep ya'll posted. Chose a Primalist, healer type, seems to be a new class.
Cheers for now!

Primalist healer is a good role to pick. Early on we're going to want a force that is primarily ranged if combat is still at all similar to pre-UW. We're quite obviously going to be a newb zerg to begin with, and if we have many guys in melee we lose at lot of our advantage to friendly fire.
If we have few to no combatants in melee we can open up with the full force of our numbers and sweep the enemy down without hitting our own.
I'm personally planning to be one of our few melee guys. My role will be to have super high defense / self heals so that if the enemy starts to push us in melee I can engage them to keep them off our main force, but be tough enough to survive some of the friendly fire I know you'll hit me with.
Also first rule of Darkfall, find a bank fast and stick everything you aren't using in there. You will die, and you will lose everything on you. Make sure that isn't everything you've looted in the past 5 hours. I personally try to bank every 30 minutes if I'm acquiring much of value.

For the record, I'm happy to join a "Goblin Squad" guild in Darkfall, and it wouldn't bother me one bit if Bluddwolf were the guild leader. I'm not nominating him, I'm just saying I don't see much value in trying to create chapters of our own guilds there.
Most people in Darkfall will have forgotten me by now but some won't have. They will expect any group I'm in to follow a strict moral code and I will not disappoint them. I never RPK and I never join clans who do. In any game.

As a member of the community, thank you and good form. :)
I'll look into this tomorrow. With school coming up soon (I'm a teacher), my nights might be getting busy with planning and grading, but this seems like a very worthwhile endeavor.
Question for all those taking part- I know many of us are role-players. Do you intend to use your forum name in Darkfall? Do you intend to play a character close to your intended PFO character?
Personally, since PFO-Hobs won't be a PvPer, I may make a completely different kind of character for Darkfall.

What's the mechanics for creating a guild, and guild leadership structures?
One player founds the group then people apply to join it. They promote people as needed. Ranks are pre-set and you cannot create/rename the ranks themselves. Supreme General is the top rank, but there can be more than one. I believe anyone who is a captain or above can access the guild bank. So those are the two really important ranks.
Guild banks do have limited storage. Not in terms of the quantity of stacked items but the number of total items. It does not increase as the guild grows, so one massive guild will have storage issues.

If an alliance lives out of a single city owned by one of the member clans are the storage issues compounded or alleviated?

I just created Nihimon as an Elven Wizard... okay, as a Mirdain Elementalist.
The UI is crap. I apparently won't be able to use my Nostromo. They've remapped the modifier keys (Alt, Shift, Ctrl) to have their own meanings, rather than letting them modify other keys.
I'll get over it.
Thanks for not stealing my name, Blaeringr.

I chose the Tovarr race (the racial descendents of Dwarves), the starting city is Maghnir. I don't know if that is good or bad, as I have not left the safety of the town yet. Plenty of starter resources in the safety of the town limits, and a dungeon area full of zombies to practice combat skills and teamwork in combat.
Wisps too, that attack the unattended harvester I am sad to say. Should have expected that. :(
Oh, my guy is Glistenheath Gologdor (or something close to that, used a Dwarf name generator for the surname from Khordaldrum (Dwarven) Name Generator.
By the way, most of the Clans (not guilds here) are less than 15 members. The biggest is 223 members, but after the largest 15-20 it tapers off quickly. A group of 25-50 would be a sizable group and would only become a target if provoking a group or outright intruding on someone else's territory. All the chatter was small harassing parties of 10 or less. From my lurking in the global chat, unless you start building a settlement, you will not be noticed except for incidental torment while moving around, harvesting or transporting (sound familiar?). But there were several comments similar to "We are not holding territory so we don't expect any big battles."
Lesson: grow until ready, and when ready to plant your flag build defenses quickly, and be prepared for a early attack to test your worthiness. (That's my take in day one at least.)
Cheers all!

@KytNyx. Each clan gets it's own bank so it helps the situation. Storage is not localized. Every player has a personal bank which can store 1000 stacks of items. The can access it by going to any bank vault anywhere in the world. Members of clans who are ranked captain or above can access a shared clan vault with 1000 slots as well, that works the same as a personal bank. While 1000 slots seems like a lot, weapons and armor pieces can't be stacked so you eat it up surprisingly fast when making ready bags. GL filled our old bank and had to start storing things in officer's personal banks.
Common practice pre-Unholy Wars was to have many clans that make up a closed alliance, with one group holding all the cities in the name of the alliance. Clans within the alliance would have their own distinguishing practices and ideals but most good alliances worked together very closely.
GL would not join into an alliance with RPK groups and ended up forming our own alliance instead which only accepted non-RPK / anti-griefer groups. I'm willing to make a compromise for the sake of the PFO community and enter into a closed alliance with them.

First impressions:
- I really hate the UI. It's going to take a lot of getting used to. I like Mouse-Move...
- Global Chat was venomous and toxic.
- I have no idea what I'm doing :)
I'm in Lyran if anyone is inclined to come escort me to Maghnir so I can join up with Hardin and the others. (I'm looking at you, Andius)
I'm giving it up for tonight, and I'll try to read up on the manual some time to get a better idea of what I should be looking for.
On that note, when do people expect to be able to play? I'd very much like to be part of a group, rather than trying to run around solo. I'll generally play during prime-time Central, but don't mind staying up late.

I'll text you before my break tomorrow Nihimon. I'll need time to head home / fill up my gas tank. After that I'll need to build a character. I'm likely going to have to ride from human lands unless they have added facial hair for elves. This should all take around an hour. After that I'll have about two hours left to get you up to dwarf lands and teach you a bit about the game.
I'll post before I do all this so people can get on PFO Fan TS and ask me any questions they have.
Also about global chat. As the locals would say "Welcome To Darkfall!" Expect to see a lot more of the same. I'm kind of glad you guys chose it, because it really highlights what we are up against more than any other game. I'm disappointed for their community but glad for our sakes the Unholy Wars apparently hasn't softened that message.

Well, no pets, so my dwarven druid will have to be either an air elementarist or a life primalist...
hmmm... probably the later...
oh, and Nihimon;) if we happen to be online at the same time i would volunteer to guard you to the next city,
i fully expect to be able to buy you a second or two should we be ambushed, if i get this game that is.
It´s a shame there are no pets, that could probably double the time

Ok, downloading now.
So, the complementary part is
You should be worried about having robust leaders. You need people with experience in large MMO guilds to be a part of your leadership structure. If you don't have any, recruit them. You should be seeking to engage with people with stated long-term interests that you will need: people interested in logistics, crafting, diplomacy, market-manipulation, and military order. These people should have a demonstrated ability to function at a high level in competitive MMO environments
Andius would be an example of someone with this kind of experience and dedication, but as I understand, he's not comfortable with that role under these conditions. So we'll need to select/grow/recruit someone to fill the executive role, and let others emerge/join to fill staff function leadership roles. Does the person that creates the guild administratively have to be the leader, at least right now? Can you transfer leadership in game?
I'd nominate someone like Hardin, Decius or Bringslite to create a guild entity, and we can find out as we go who might be suited to settlement level leadership.

I downloaded last evening, but currently the NA server says "GMs Only", so before I make a character, I'd like to be sure if there's a strong reason why I should pick one race over another.
After rereading my post, it occurred to me that might look rather min-maxy, which I've never been (I usually have no clue as to the best builds in a game...I just pick races/skills/etc. that interest me). But my take on this venture is to work for the good of our GS clan, so if I planned to play an archer/hunter/gather type, does that role fit better with a particular race for starting area advantages?

I think that is indications of 4 Tovarr, 1 Elf analogue, and 1 Human.
Whatever you want Hobs. We seem to be planning to meet in Dwarf (Tovarr lands).
@Mbando
Need to accumulate 2000gold to start a clan.

Being is Tovarr, which I understand is a half-dwarven human. Or a half-human dwarf the size of a human.
I considered going Elven but since we were meeting up in Dorftown, Harbin was already Tovarr, and the appearance of elves as an unlikely mix of elf and orc, I elected to go with a dwarman. Huwarf?

What other roles are there besides elementalist?
There is a caster focused on the forces of life and death called a Primalist, there are two variants of Skirmisher, a medium armor wearing fighter who can spec as archer or as dual-wielding melee, and three warrior variants.
Not sure whether there are more than that, nor whether more may be in the development pipeline.

Looks like its decided then. Darkfall it is. Can anybody please help this poor Macsucker if I have the right specs on my windows bootcamp for the game?
It says Darkfall needs windows xp service pack 3. I use windows 7. I'd hate to have repeat of Secret world which I bought and couldnt play.
I run on Win 7. No problems so far, but not in mass combat yet either.
